?, amday JMternative J4igli S chool Our $eginningd In the 1920'i, the citv board of education realized the necessity for a fourth high school which could serve the growing white community of the southern side of town Opened in September of 1930. the new high school was named for the long-time president of the board of education. Erskine Ramsay. Even though the school was officially named Erskine Ramsay Technical High School, emphasis was placed on academic and humanities courses with only four iHit of twenty-six teachers providing instruction in technical subjects. Generally, the students at Ramsay were ftom upper-middle class to upper class homes Under the leadership of their principal, Thomas Campbell Young, these students began to write an outstanding record of excellence for their school, a record w hich made Ramsay 'the high school in the state. By winning the city championship in tennis, the city and state championships in track, and the city and county championships in baseball. Ramsay achieved the best overall sports record of all the city schools in 1951. During the 1969-1970 school vear. Ramsay's enrollment totaled 880 students, of which 50.2 percent were minority. In 1970-1971. the Birmingham Board of Education instituted new school rones, and for the first time. Birmingham students were assigned to specific schools, forcing many of them to lease their alma maters By 1975, Ramsay's enrollment was 75.5 percent minority Aif ter native Ramsay requested permission to pilot the trimester schedule in the Birmingham city system for the school year 1976-1977. Simultaneously, a court order of July 1976 rcdistnctcd the Ramsay attendance zone and established Ramsay as an alternative school The yearbook staff wishes to express appreciation to Martha B Surnmey for sharing with os enlightening ideas front Iter Ramsay High School — A Fifty Year Retrospective' Approximately forty-five elementary schools from around the Birmingham area are represented each year in Ramsay’s freshman class In otilcr CO be accepted at Ramsay, students must excel on the California Achievement Test and Ramsay's placement test. In addition, each student must he recommended by the principal, faculty members, and counselors at his elementary school ram The student body to be accepted would be fifty percent minority and fifty percent non-minority with the goal of establishing a stable, integrated situation Enrollment requirements would involve application by students throughout the city. Many followers were to benefit from the leadership of these pioneers. Presently, another body of innovative adventurers is pushing outward in all directions. They have hopes of perfecting a unique educational program that will set the pace for schools of the future. They are the Ramsay faculty. This prodigious assemblage has contributed much to the development of Ramsay's quality of eduaction Each teacher has something special to share with the students participating in the alternative program. A stern but fair administrator, Mr. Thomas has served as an initiator of change when it has been necessary. In hopes of vastly ameliorating the educational program in Birmingham. Mr. Thomas spearheaded the development of the trimester plan in the city and then successfully implemented the trimester system at Ramsay in 1976. Directing curriculum development and improving course offerings, he involved all teachers in the writing of course descriptions, outlines, and daily plans for their subject areas. His efforts resulted in eighty new course offerings for a total of 140 courses under the trimester system as compared to 60 under the previous, traditional plan. Mr. Thomas has also been actively engaged in promoting Ramsay Alternative High School for average and above average students and has contributed to the success of the alternative program in many ways. Offering only constructive criticism, he has established a climate of excellence by encouraging teachers to aim for the top. He has put forth a genuine effort to build programs and activities in such a way as to involve all students as active members, participants rather than spectators, in school sponsored and directed programs. In addition. Mr. Thomas has worked through the years to connect Ramsay teachers and students with the community in mutually beneficial activities. When Ramsay students were in need of remedial work in the sixties, he developed a tutorial program involving members of the South Highland Presbyterian Church. In 1978. he established an arrangement whereby Ramsay students could sign up for swimming classes at a minimal cost. In exchange, the Y.M.C.A. could use Ramsay facilities during the summer. In 1978. Mr. Thomas also developed a reciprocal agreement with the U. Y.B. College of General Studies. The arrangement enabled Ramsay students to benefit from tuition-free college courses in exchange for limited use of space at Ramsay. In addition, he has cultivated relationships with the Southsidc Baptist Church and St. Mary’s on the Highlands so that students, teachers, and Southside citizens can enjoy programs which require the use of an organ. Mr. Thomas has helped to turn many new ideas into realities at Ramsay. For his ability to put into action programs which are of value to students, teachers, and members of the community, the yearbook staff expresses sincere gratitude. 95 m emory reemcin
