We honor Doctor Haberlen was born some time during the latter half of the nine- teenth century in an obscure area of Mount Pleasant Township. In common with the claims of many great men, he was born in a log cabin, the exact location of which is not known, Most of his early life was spent on a farm near the place of his birth, where he attended a district school about two miles distant from his home. lt was not considered a hardship to walk in those days, and he rarely missed a day of school. His first term of school was but six months. After completing the course of the district school, he entered the California State Normal School, as Hurst high school had not yet been established. Following his graduation from the California institu- tion, ,he taught for two years in Mount Pleasant Township before entering Get- tysburg College, where he graduated four years later. With the exception of a year and a half in the army during World War I, he has been in contin- uous educational service since his graduation from college. He has served as teacher, principal and superintend- ent, first in East Huntingdon Township and later in Mount Pleasant borough, where he has been superintendent for thirty years. During his service in Mount Pleasant, he earned his master's and doctor's degrees from the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh. Doctor Haberlen will retire at the close of the present school term after nearly a half century of service in the public schools, thirty-seven of which were spent in Mount Pleasant Borough. l Dr. John C. Haberlen, superintendent of Mount Pleasant schools, 1921-1958. Friend to all, even the little ones, who are not alarmed by his stern manner.
