In common with the claims of many great men, he was born in a log cabin, the exact location of which is not known, Most of his early life was spent on a farm near the place of his birth, where he attended a district school about two miles distant from his home. lt was not considered a hardship to walk in those days, and he rarely missed a day of school. His first term of school was but six months. After completing the course of the district school, he entered the California State Normal School, as Hurst high school had not yet been established. Following his graduation from the California institu- tion, ,he taught for two years in Mount Pleasant Township before entering Get- tysburg College, where he graduated four years later. With the exception of a year and a half in the army during World War I, he has been in contin- uous educational service since his graduation from college. He has served as teacher, principal and superintend- ent, first in East Huntingdon Township and later in Mount Pleasant borough, where he has been superintendent for thirty years. During his service in Mount Pleasant, he earned his master's and doctor's degrees from the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh. Doctor Haberlen will retire at the close of the present school term after nearly a half century of service in the public schools, thirty-seven of which were spent in Mount Pleasant Borough. l Dr. John C. Haberlen, superintendent of Mount Pleasant schools, 1921-1958. Friend to all, even the little ones, who are not alarmed by his stern manner. iq. The cheers at the games, the marching of the band, the voices of the choir, the projects of the clubs, the applause at curtain call, the news and gossip of the Beacon, the associations at the dances - all these have contributed to the social activities at Ramsay. 1i .l.-1 lst Row: Linda Grimm, Eileen Cramer, Donna Biller, Betty Shaffer, Phyllis Porter- field, Florence Switalski, Janet Kalp,Shirley Andrews, Pat Rudnik, Leannah Myers, Chris- tine Jaquette, Nancy Farrell, Dolores Cost- abile, Bonnie Brush, Rebecca Zipnock, Bev- erly Nisiewicz, Joan Mongelluzzo. 2nd Row: Darlene McClain, Janice Skergan, Phyllis Wisniewski, Joy Zaronsky, Jane Kreinbrook, Priscilla Pitt, Rosalee Monroe, Becky Kast- ner, Rita Krotz, Lucille Rega, Jayne Keslar, Connie Russell, Peggy Dolan, BonnieSmetak, Patty Toczek, Anna Catherine Borza, Barb- ara Farrell. 3rd Row: Valjean Monticue, Carol Hart, Bonnie Pieszak, Dianne Miller, Karen Snider, Evelyn Ogrodny, Janet Lohr, Betty Snyder, Janet Daniels, Audrey Shaffer, Kathryn Kunkle, Gladys Keslar, Dorothy Far- ino, Margaret Long, Jean Cole, Marlene Sofranko, Esther Santarel, Pat Liska, Bob Larko. The senior class play brought back many junior Thespians to the footlights. The chosen play, Father of the Brides, directed by R.W, Myers, was a howling success. Blood pressures rose, when after a laughable second act, the curtain refused to close. Many moments at class play practice, such as the beating of the drum and the blowing of tubas, will linger forever. Playing 'A' ball, Ramsay fielded both a football and a basketball team. The teams were built on good material, and earned the solid support of students and fans in the district. As in the past, Ramsay was one of the powerhouses of Westmoreland County sports. 001, ootballl - MT, ,, an-Mi3C'5'- i.'?.' 3 Yi, K , u i' - 16 3,9Bgfs5r?7Q?ge2E575Q9u,E393,?ss,9s4 7 75-,R 7'F8U,Q85+:i.- V 491.15 535,16 7 Varsity Football Team, 1957 Edition lst Row: Dan Topley, Jim McCloy, Frank Pfrogner, Bob Centofanto, Mike Marne, Ron Zimmerman, Don Welc, Dom Cesario, Bill Houser, John Jahoda. 2nd Row: Pete Ricotta, Lanny Ulery, Jim Cash, Vern Kalp, George Seighman, Rich Sikorsky, Sam Etze,John Kozbelt,Chuck Beabout, Bill Riggs, Joe Wood, Bob Worry, Bernard Paglio. 3rd Row: Bill Pezzillo, Dan White, Milton Kuhn, Bill Lee, Tom Noble, Jim Watson, Ray Fornal, Sam Flannagan, Joe Paglio, Joe Sofranko, Jim Delligatti, Joe Fornal. Opening with St. Vincent and a victory, 25-19, we marched on to come from behind and top S, Huntingdon, 14-6. ln a free scoring game, we racked up number 3, 34-20. Winless East Huntingdon was next, and when we finished, winless they still were - 27-7l The biggest game for the players and fans was Scottdale. After breezing to a 19-7 half-time score, Lady Luck blew the other way. Scottdale snapped back strong, and as usual a 28-28 tie blew in. Hoping to snap back toa victory, defeat was our reward, a 39-13 loss to a powerful Shaler team. Thus we had to wait for another game. Vandergrift was our next foe and victim. Considered the most thrilling and exciting game, we triumphed 13-12. Hurst, our annual rival, was to follow. On a damp, cold, and muddy night, before some 8,000 fans, we stumped favored Hurst, a 0-0 tie. As the con- clusion of the season we had to play Derry Qrescheduled because of fluj, which proved tobe a little too much for us. Defeat number 2 came, 27-0. Our season ended with a record of 5 wins, 2 defeats and 2 ties. Not actually the greatest, but something to be proud ofl 5? g . ,,, kr ,Ay 9, John Kozbelt SQ L.. 1 W2.+...l' na '07 ff .'
