What do pep assemblies, class competitions, class meetings, and dances have in common? FRIDAY!! The whole idea of Friday is to increase school spirit, and what better way to do that then to dress up in colors that only fellow Bulldogs can appreci- ate? Red, White, and Blue covered the campus, not only by the football players and the various pep squads, but also by fellow students. As Senior Vice-President Dawne Peck commented, “Pep assemblies get me excited for the big game.” Everyone is hyper and more outgoing on Fridays because of the shortened periods, a game, or whatever the weekend promises. For Jose Llamas, a sophomore, “Friday is a day to party!” Our new principal, Mr. Roulsten, planned many great ideas to get school spirit soaring. Faculty found it quite exciting to be a part of it and they even put together new clubs. Many students met once a month for various clubs. More serious students chose chess, science action, or the French clubs to suit their needs. The more outgoing, relaxed students looked forward to the ski, pep, or surf clubs. But whatever club they joined, it was just another example of their great school spirit. Fridays were sure days to remember, whether we were some screaming fans in the crowd or some of those people dancing up a storm. Congratula- tions Bulldogs! We let our spirit shine through! 4 5 Take 45 ... LUnCH POMONA MlGH 2 What is so special about 11:35? Ask any student at Ramona High and you will instantly see a smile, followed by the reply, “That is when lunch begins!” Finally it’s 11:35. The anticipating students jump out of their fourth period chairs with only one thing on their minds... FOOD! Students are everywhere, eating, talking, being with friends, and just enjoying time out of class. Some students might even be studying for that dreaded fifth period exam. 45 minutes is the time designated for lunch, but is that enough time? Seniors Amber Groth and Jennifer Ritter believe that for the time they spend in class, 45 minutes is not enough time for lunch. On the other hand, Megan McConville believes that 45 minutes is plenty of time if you are staying on campus. On campus you have your choice of the Deli Stand, lunch line, student store, or brown lunch, if they have a lunch pass. Freshman Jeff Hartwig doesn’t think it’s fair that freshman and sophomores can’t go off campus. Well guys, now you have something to look forward to when you are juniors. Dustin Wood, a junior, often likes to go to 7 11 during lunch, while Junior Torres, a senior, thinks Jack-in-the-Box is the place to go. So whether you are off campus or on ... take 45- and EAT!!!! 5 6. It definitely has to be a football player’s lunch! 7. What do you mean, no more burritos? 8. Jcri and Miles enjoy lunch together. 9. A lot of friends around helps the food go down better. 10 Who needs a table to enjoy lunch? Forever Friends Friendship is a very important thing in high school. Mishel Kathawa says her best friend Heather Wilfong is the best friend she’s ever had. They have been friends for about one year, and the closeness they’ve shared has proved their friendship long- lasting. Their friendship is based on trust, communication, and honesty. Some people have a best friend to talk and share deep secrets and concerns with. Others have just friends to hang out with. Bill Fallaw has a lot of fun cruising around with his best friend Abe Tarango. Bill lends Abe money while Abe taxis Bill around. They have a lot of fun while each one is lending a helping hand to the other. Onion Cordoba and her best friend Terra Bailey like to have fun going to parties and playing sports together. Some friend- ships come in a triplet form. Three people get together and find it easier to have two special friends to talk and share their fun with, like Dianna Blair and her two best friends Holly Bisbikis and Sarah Waters. Dianna says that having two best friends has both advantages and disadvantages. Dianna and Holly share the same opinions and relate to one another well. Dianna and Sarah get into serious conversations where Sarah can share her feeling with Dianna and get the advice she needs. But when the three of them get together problems disappear and fun arises. Another idea on friendships is Gina Tamburrino’s outlook. She stated, “The best friend 1 have is my dad (Coach Tambo). He’s there for me to talk to with good or bad news. He’s someone 1 really love and can trust forever.” Friendships come with different opinions and different out- looks. But the main things that can hold a friendship together are love, trust, being able to relate to each other, and being there whenever a problem arises. VERY SIMPLY, EVERYBODY NEEDS A FRIEND! 1. Even tough guys smile. 2. Yes. I love my truck but I have friends too. 3. Relaxing with friends at lunch 4. Friends stick together. 5. Shaloe holds a friendly conversa- tion with Suzy. 6. Friends are great to lean on. 7. “Jack in the Box Buddies 8. Jim and his harem. 9. No matter how you dress, you too can have friends. RHS Spirit Shines Through You know it’s Friday, when you open the door to the gym and you see spirit-bound RHS students waiting for the start of the assembly. The band starts to play “On Ramona” and the crowd goes wild. As you have noticed, there has been more spirit this year. Whether you were cheering with your class or getting the team ready for the game, you felt and saw the excitement. Some of the more memorable moments were: the introduction 6 1. Wait! There’s more! 2. Surprise! 3. Don’t drop me! 4. I’m so cute! 5. Fun in the sun! 6. Dizzy Blondes! 7. Hot Buns! 8. Charge! 10 of the Freshman class and the Jock Pots where Jeri Koepp and Brian Roe displayed their spirit by wearing toilet seats all day. There was also Hot Buns, where each class tried to melt down the block of ice first. These were just a few class competitions. Mr. Roulsten’s phrase “Excellence is a Matter of Pride” has been presented many times this year. Through pep assemblies, class competitions, and student participation we have showed that our pride and spirit shine through. FANTASIES Jennifer Abiel and Tom Smith Megan McConville and Frank Thomas Tory Reece and Matt Dart This year something new was tried for our Home- coming. A Night of Fantasies began with the crown- ing of our 1987 Homecoming King and Queen. The candidates made a grand entrance down the steps of our stadium and onto the field. The King was an- nounced, Jason McClenaghan, and he was given a pillow with a glass slipper on it. He walked in front of the ladies, slowly, drawing attention. Everyone won- dered who would be his queen. A lull came over the crowd and Janet McCrite was announced Homecom- ing Queen. Excitement filled the air, cameras clicked, and flashes sparked, as the King and Queen stood together in front of the stands, then made their grand exit. Our Homecoming dance was held in the gym, which was decorated with blue and white draped streamers. One slow song was dedicated to the court and Jason and Janet opened the dancing. Slowly the rest of the court flowed out into the circle, and after a few min- utes everyone else joined in. The dance was something special to remember, definitely a Night of Fantasies. The King and Queen and their entourage had their pictures taken at Ramona’s own castle, just the right end to a week of Fantasies. Senior Attendants: Kari Green and Ray Bowen, Heather Ferrick and Bobby Brewster, Ann Matson and Chad Nelson. Annette Underwood and Brian Roc. King Jason McClenaghan and Queen Janet McCrite 13 A Week of Fantasies ... It was a week of fantasies come true for many RHS students. Spirit filled the air while many anxiously awaited Friday night’s big event. The week involved such activities as: dress-up days, class competitions, King and Queen voting, and, as always, the annual Homecoming Parade. On Monday it began with students dressing as tourists. With cameras around their necks and hats on their heads, it was quite an eventful day. At lunch everyone gathered around to watch “Gag in the Bag”. On Tuesday, Farmer Day, cowboy hats and overalls were the popular attire. Everyone joined in to build their class pyramid as high as it would go. On Wednesday, students and teachers dressed in a new kind of fashion. It was “Clash Day” at RHS with the patterns ranging from purple polka dots to yellow and green stripes, and even both of them together. This day’s class competition was a tug-of-war in which the mighty Seniors pulled out in front. Thursday was the classic “Nerd Day” and everyone seemed to dress and act appropriate- ly. The water toss at lunch was fun for all. To end this fun-filled week, Friday was “Spirit Day with everyone wearing their class colors. The Juniors succeeded in winning the Homecoming float contest with their portrayal of the knight slaying the drag- on and protecting his castle. The Seniors followed close behind for second place with their float of “Fanta-Seas.” A pep assem- bly and an A.S.B. barbecue at lunch were a great finish for this memorable week of activities. It soon would be Saturday’s big dance where many of us would have the time of our lives. Not only did we have a wonder- ful week of fun, we soon would be having a night of “fantasies”. Should I wave? He’s my girl. Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. Class of ’88 float “Fanta-Seas Calm down, killer. Ethel and Erma enjoying happy meals. Do you want to see me down on my knees? . At RHS 16 A Summer At Harvard “It wasn’t what I expected it to be.” said Tom Robershaw. “Boston is a very nice place. There are more things to do that eighteen- year-old teens can participate in.” “I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything, said Carol Prather, “We had no curfew and lots of indi- vidual trips.” Harvard College was a great place to go over the summer. Harvard helped Tom and Carol with this school year’s studies. It was a lot easier for them now, not having to study as much in their classes here at Ramona High. Tom studies International Relations (current problems in the U.S. vs U.S.S.R.). Carol how- ever, took a different route and studied the general requirements. The classrooms and lec- ture halls were very nice. The teachers didn’t care if you showed up or not. Students were mostly kick-back, although there were some students who were categorized as especially smart. They were “the brains.” These students were the Orientals. Tom and Carol went to Harvard for the courses, the excitement of get- ting out of Ramona for a while, and to satisfy their curiosity about an Eastern college cam- pus. All and all the experience of going to Har- vard College for Tom and Carol was a spectac- ular and memorable occasion. My pants ripped and 1 had to go home to change them. 1 was abducted by aliens and barely escaped with my life. The bell rang before I walked in the door. CLASS OF ’88 One of the many privileges that the Senior class had was the Senior parking places. Seniors could purchase parking spots that were auctioned off at the beginning of the year. Their names were painted on their parking spaces but to some students their names were not enough. This is an example of one student’s creativity. Brian, who was named athlete of the week, was called down from the bleachers to receive the award. To Brian’s surprise, not only did he receive the award, but he also received a pie in his face. When Tambo was asked why Brian was hit with the pie, he said, “1 didn’t want his head to get swelled after getting athlete of the week, so I told Brian that there was a photographer from the TIMES ADVOCATE that wanted to take his picture shaking hands with his coach; and he turned around and that’s when he was hit with the pie.” THANKS BRIAN FOR BEING SUCH A GOOD SPORT! Bryan, moser “ 22 lives on” MDJ mr Dawgs Return To Glory In 1987 the Ramona Bulldogs took their first step in their “Return to Glory.” The Bulldogs ended the county’s longest losing streak and started out the Avocado League with a come-from-behind victory over Escondido, the first-ever home win over the Cougars. The Ramona fans, alumni, students, parents, and boost- ers filled the Bulldog stadium and supported the Bulldogs. The senior players provided leadership and their sum- mer of dedication in the weight room and in passing paid dividends with victories. Bryan Roe, Mark Dcskovich, Tony Anzaldua and Jason McClenaghan were the out- standing seniors in the first edition of the Junkyard dogs Seniors Shawn Boyd, Jim Dick, John Cresci, Mike Allen, Robert Henry, and Marvin Wynn provided the offense with leadership and experience. With a talented junior class returning and taking control of the field now as seniors, it set the stage for the “Dawgs Return to Glory.” 3 1. I don’t want to sit the bench, I want to play! 2. Strength and determination were just two of the main ingredients that made this year's Frosh team successful. Jeff Mano was quoted, “There's always no best player. We work as a team, and our coaches treat us like one. Coach Anderson agreed that the whole Frosh team worked hard to stay eligible. Every player made it through the season, an accom- plishment that they all can be proud of. Coaches in charge of this awesome team were: Coaches Anderson, Smith, Doxey, and Price. 52 Back row: Coach Price. Coach Smith. Jason Hamilton. Ryan Simpson. Brian Wolfman, Brian Bair. Jason Emerick. Exciting! The Bulldogs started their '87 season with enthusiasm and determination. What makes J.V. football? Strength and determination! J.V. player Brian Rogers said, “I think we had a great year. Everyone on the team played to their poten- tial, we worked hard, the coaches taught well, and the team had an awesome season.” The major strong point of the team was hav- ing a strong running game, and motivated coaches like Dean Houser and Denver Prince. Back row: Deaver Price, Danny Lachinc, Doug Ford, Adan Klu- kowski, Dean Houser. Fourth row: Jeff Galusha, Jose Llamas, John Vaughn, John Tex, Jason Smith, GcromyFurgison, Jake Dumy, Danny Comstork. Coach! Wc’rc almost there, keep it up. Legs. Karen Karcher wanted to make it to State, come in the top ten, and beat out Rancho Buena Vista. Amy Ledwith’s goal was to beat the girl who was most competitive with her throughout the years she has run. Jennifer Story just wanted to make All-League. Eventually, the Girls Cross-Country team accomplished all their goals. They had a very successful year, ending in 6-1 overall. Girls won their division at Mt. Sac with Karen first, Jennifer fourth, and Amy tenth out of approximately seventy-five girls. After going to C.I.F., the whole team went to State where they finished twelfth out of nineteen teams. Top runners were Karen in seventh place, and Jennifer, twenty-seventh out of one hundred and forty-five girls. “The girls put out a lot this year; they gave 98% and worked well together,” said Coach Soroka. The girls had a lot of endurance, iron will, and, most all, the ability to disregard pain during their strenuous workouts and demanding races. Top runners for the year were Karen, Jennifer, and Amy. “But without every girl, they wouldn’t have made it to State,” Coach Soroka enthusiastically responded. It was a real TEAM effort! Back row: Mr. Soroka. Shari Goff, KarenKarcher, Amy Ledwith. Front row: Jennifer Story. Cynthia Rodrigo. Sandra Gricgo, Dionne Ulmer. Patty Souza. Boys Cross-Country had a good year, not as good as last year, but the record was still ok, 2-5. Leading the boys in almost all the races were Jeff Donham and Anthony Baker. Other top runners were Tony Marmelejo, Miguel Espinoso, Noe Pateno, and Louis Perez, who made up the Varsity team. The team was especially strong in their younger members. There were two Freshmen on the Varsity team. “We are only losing two runners, but our Freshmen will keep the team going.” Jeff ended up going to C.l.F. and then State. Anthony joined Jeff in the C.l.F. meet, coming in thirteenth and Jeff ninth. At State Jeff did exceptionally well, coming in fifty-ninth out of one hundred boys. Coach Soroka was pretty happy with his team this year. They worked hard to get where they’re at. “I’m looking forward to working with the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors next year,” Coach Soroka cheerfully added. Ramona's team is a step ahead! Where did I get the idea to run Cross-Country? Back row: Noe Pateno, James Wancr, Mr. Soroka, Chris Moore. Tony Marmeleho, Jeff Donham. Front row: E.J. Colia. Anthony Baker, Tim Lcppink, Louis Perez. 55 TEAMS THAT REALLY First row: Kelly McClure, Gina Tamborino, Miky Petrone, Shaloe Cazare, Yvette Currie. Second row: Coach Barnes, Susan Anderson, Tina Brooklyn, Jennifer Ritter, Terra Bailey, Jcri Kocpp, Robin Ruther- ford. Summer ended early for the Varsity and J.V. athletes, spending their last two weeks of summer practicing long hours in the heat, trying to make the teams during HELL WEEK. Eleven Varsity and twelve J.V. players were on their way to biting into other schools, and leaving their motto “Fear no-one, respect everyone” firmly em- bedded in their memories. J.V. did exceptionally well, taking an undefeated lead. Most valuable play- ers Maria Cordoba and Christina Abarca led their team in teamwork, excel- lent serving, and defense. Maria commented, “We're awesome and we are heading for an undefeated season.” Varsity also played well, considering it was a new team with new outlooks and lots of potential. Third-year returner and Most Valuable Player Jennifer Ritter and second-year returner Jeri Koepp led the team in their awesome teamwork and defense. Terra Bailey said, “We’ve improved since the begin- ning of the season and we have a bunch of hard-working individuals.” Coach Barnes stated, “1 am pleased they get along so well together, and the team is fun to coach.” Varsity ended the season well, 6-8, while J.V. had a 14-0 margin, both scores showing real team spirit. This year’s tennis team was greatly improved with the help of two fantastic new coaches, Varsity coach Rose Kalabsa-Smith and J.V. coach Theresa Smick. There was also much better participa- tion than in years before. Having only two seniors, a large majority of the team was made up of newcomers, but with their strong effort, they made a big difference. These players will hopefully remain with the team and keep up their enthusiasm and desire to win. The end result this year was sixth place out of eight teams, ahead of El Camino and Oceanside High Schools. The overall season was five and eleven. Considering last year being zero and twelve, this year's team really made great strides. Rocio Cagide, a foreign exchange student from Guadalajara, was one of the top four play- ers in the league. She went on to represent our team in the C.I.F. playoffs. Coach Kalabsa commented, “The outlook for next year seems very promising. I think that the team will go on to be bigger and better.” 2 1. Two more points were already added to the al- ready inflated score as the buzzer signified the end of an intense and electrifying game. Concentration and deep-seated determi- nation were reflected in every game the Boys Basketball team played. With their goals solidly set, they never lost their confi- dence or pride. Kenny Pendell said that the best thing that he could say about Ra- mona’s Varsity Basketball Team was that he played on a team with a winning atti- tude. Not only did Coach Schaeffer insist that each player play up to his potential, U.P.S. was demanded. Unity, Pride, and Spirit were what led Ramona to the C.I.F.’s. The three seniors that were on the team were Kenny Pendell, Chad Nelson, and Jason McClenaghan. Nelson and McClenaghan were the team captains. The coaches of both teams agreed that they all were a great group of guys with a lot of potential. With a lot of hard work and devotion, they can look forward to being on a winning J.V. or Varsity team next season. Everyone really stands behind each other, and helps each other out. That itself makes us a great team,” said Kris Miller. With an impressive non-league overall re- cord of 15-4, the Lady “Dawgs went into the Avocado League with even more enthusiasm. The league started with four consecutive wins before los- ing to San Pasqual. With an impres- sive record of 8-3 so far, the Lady Dawgs battled for their first Avocado League Championship, and the C.l.F. Playoffs. 6 I’ve got it! It's mine!!! What’s on the wall??? The Varsity team went for their sixth straight League championship. Eight Seniors and twelve Juniors made up this unbeatable team. The major strong points of the team were their speed, passing skills, and their ability to play as a team. Some of these play- ers learned the skill of teamwork since the ages of five and six. Some of the players started as native Ramona soccer players. Bill Pittsford, coach of the Varsity team, has been coaching for seven years here in Ramona. He really knew what made his team tick. Showing confidence in his players, he commented, “Dean Winther, Marco Garcia, and Derek Dargo comprised the best forward line in San Diego.” He also mentioned that Chico Bram- billa should be an All-League defend- er because of his great defending skills. The team agreed that the best player for this season was Nizam Najd, an enthusiastic soccer player. The girls lost the battle with San Pasqual. They had been Fighting for four years, and came so close each time. Even though they had to be satisfied with second place, they still were very happy about going to C.I.F. for the third time in the four years they had been playing. Captains Jennifer Crook, Gcnneta Johnson, and Kari Matson helped the team get through some rough times with their enthusiasm and encouragement. Overall the girls’ record was 15-3-1, with league results ending in 11- 2-1. The team was a very young one composed of eight sophomores and four juniors making most of the plays. Two of the six senior players were on the team since it started in 1984. They were very sorry about having to leave the team after such a long commitment. Their part- ing wish is that next year's team will beat San Pasqual. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!! Back row. Mrs. Nelson. Candic Townsend. Encouragement and enthusiasm were seen in each and every player. The Freshmen Boys did a great job this year with 6 wins and 2 losses. Coach Dan Ramirez felt that his team had great skill and mobility. The Girls J.V. had an excellent season with 11 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie game. “Our team showed a lot of effort,” said Krista Fcrrick. “Everyone was real supportive of each other and really helped each other out. Key players Heather Eudy, Marta Garcia and Jennifer Story helped the team with their many victories. Eleven wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties summed up the Boys J.V. team this year. “Our key to success was consistency. We had excellent ball handlers and our aggressiveness helped us work well together,” said Michael Jor- don. Overall, this year’s teams were much bet- ter than last. Al- though there were a few without ex- perience, they did their best to get out there and win. Due to injuries within the team, their performances did not quite match their goals. The Varsity team had a fierce com- petition with Carlsbad. In the end they pulled through and defeated them. The Captains and top wrestlers of the Varsity team were Trent Llebe, wt. 135, Kriss Martenson, wt. 115, and Tony Anzudua, wt. 177. Kriss and Trent had fifteen wins and five losses. The J.V. and Freshman teams had their greatest competition with San Pasquel and Carlsbad. Like the Var- sity they defeated them in the end. With the experience the J.V. team re- ceived, Ramona High is sure to have a winning, enthusiastic team to carry on the spirit of the wrestling team in “89”. Many of the players have grown up together with baseball from the time of Little League to high school. Working hard amid the sounds of cracking bats, smack- ing leather, and dust settling, the Dawgs fought for the title of Avocado League champs. This high aspiring team led by Coach Bill Tamborrino was dedicated and willing to work hard for it. Tambo stated that the pitch- ing staff would be one of the strongest in the league’s history. He expected Jason McClen- aghan, Ray Bowen, Jamey Gibson, Art Tucker, and Chris Gunnet would do excep- tionally well this year. Every day one to two times a day, the drills consisted of starting at home, running to first, on to third, then walking to home base. Then they dashed from home to third and walked to home base again. Last they ran to home, a sprint around all the bases. The strong men of the high school, the Freshman Baseball team, came out on top, not because they were muscle men, but because they fought hard and long. The team was stron- gest in hitting, and that’s what really helps a baseball team make it to the top. Coach Galli said, “We seem to have some good athletes. And if we can get some pitching, we will have a good team.” Even though it was something that had to be practiced every day, the boys worked with en- thusiasm, and tried to mold them- selves into a team that would succeed. The team consisted of three sophomores, four juniors, and five seniors, led by cap- tains Kim Maclnnes and Jeri Koepp. Coach Gallion felt that the major strong point of the team was their defense. There- sa Martinez and Leslie Tarants were the two strong pitchers. Kim Maclnnes, Jeri Koepp, Jodi Winter, Janean Farley, and Cindy Johnson were very strong players on the team. The goal the team set was to win 50% of their games and qualify for the CIF play- offs. Jeri Koepp stated, “I think our team has the ability to go all the way.” Tory Reese said, “I am excited for the season and feel we really have the talent to go far.” Kim Maclnnes summed it all up, “With a lot of hard work, confidence, and enthusi- asm I feel we will be a winning team.” The J.V. Softball team coached by Mr. Flauser was expected to do very well this year. The coach felt that this was the best J.V. team to come through in many years. Three players who were expected to play well were Maggie Vallender, Debbi Ross- back, and Penny Broadhurst. This enthusiastic team was out to win, but also to have a great time doing it. Running, sprinting, shot-putting, jumping, or racing, the boys were filled with boundless energy. Top scorers Jeff Donham, Tony Baker, and Mark Owen were just a few of the competitive athletes. These boys led the team with enthusiasm and hard work toward a successful season. Long, hard, prosperous practices helped to keep these boys in shape, toned, and eager for the challenge. Taking great strides towards victory, the Girls Track team came a long way to get to the top. Running 4-40 relays, mile relays, mile runs, two-mile runs, hundred yard dashes, and throwing the shotput and the discus, they pushed themselves to the limit. Karen Karcher, Genncta Johnson, and Jennifer Story were great factors to the team. They brought in a lot of points to push the team ahead. Long strenuous practice before each meet helped the girls be on top. Mondays and Fridays the girls had to run the hill. That is a long two-mile run around town. The rest of the week they just loped around the track field for stamina. On some Saturdays they went to invitationals where they competed for medals. All the hard work-outs paid off for the girls, leaders of the pack! 80 Back row: Jeff Donham, Dan Comstock, Alan Ayles, Mark Owen, Todd Johnson, Jason Emerick, Dennis Barrett. Bill Dunlap. If they did their best and reached their potential, he felt they would have a 90% chance to go to C.I.F. this year as a full team. Top Varsity gymnasts were senior and Captain Deedra Hoskings on the floor and beam. She had a great chance of ranking top in the league. Sopho- more Jennifer Magargal was their top all-around optional. Tina Swift, a senior and most versatile, competed as an optional and on compulsory bars and vault. Sherry Pearson, Celeste Kilmer and Carol Prather, all experienced seniors, give the team strength and consistency. Luckily they were a well- balanced team of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Ramona High should feel strong and confident about their gymnastics team for several years. J.V. was led by Senior Tonya Renner on floor, vault, and beam. Patty Figueroa and Jenniffer Owens, both juniors, were grooming to become fu- ture top Varsity competitors. Hole In One The Varsity Golf team had high hopes for returning to C.I.F. and improving their finish from last year. Led by two outstand- ing juniors, Jimmy Breaux and Chris Whitehead, they hoped to lead the team of John Harms, Mark Lukacs, Scott Bolen, Bryan Wagner and Chuc-Lan Lantow to victory. The team opened the season with a victory over El Capitan, 206 to 252, and hoped for continued success in the Avocado League. The Junior Varsity team was composed of several freshmen and sophomores. Most of the team were first-time players. Coach Ed Schwartz said, We have sev- eral inexperienced players. We are not con- cerned with winning as much as we are with improving our skills and preparing them for Varsity in two years.” Coach Schwartz loves coaching golf and claims it is totally individual. Their unity was shown by their working together to bring home the Spirit Stick from NCA Cheer Camp. Bridgette Bottomly, Gia Doxey, Lin- ette Lcppink, and April Palmer felt that their most memorable moment at camp was when they received a blue ribbon for their worst performance ever. At the end of their performance, the pyramid col- lapsed and they started laughing hyster- ically, yet they still received a blue rib- bon. Jessica Drummer, Kari Green, and Denice Ragsdale felt cheering with all the squads and Alumni at Homecoming left special memories with them. The team attended Sharp Hibbards All-American Camp. In spite of strenuous practicing, they felt it was well worth their time and effort when they took first place in the large military competi- tion. They also won the Sweepstakes trophy for overall spirit and participation throughout the week. In addition to their enthusiastic performances at football and basketball games during the fall and winter seasons, the team was also involved in State competition at Disneyland in December. Tall Flag When you think of school spirit you automatically think of the Tall Flag team. The team worked quite hard this year. Under the leadership of Rose Grant and Katherine Chris- tiansen they started off the year well by taking second place at Hibbard's All-American Camp, which was a first for this seven-member team. Then in December they took fourth place at the S.S.C. competition held at Knott’s Berry Farm. This was quite an accomplishment for a team which by then had been reduced to only four members. Throughout the year they performed at football and bas- ketball games, as well as pep assemblies. “Football games were my favorite, said Tamra DeMartini, a Senior on the team; but Michelle Hill said, “I think competition was my favorite part of the year. You could always see them wear- ing their uniforms on Fridays, and they were always in the stands cheering the Bulldogs to victory. Short Flag Moving To The Top Hard work and determination made 1987-1988 a very successful year for the Short Flag Team. This nine-member team had many accomplishments throughout the year. Placing fourth at Hibbard’s All-American Camp in August was a very slow start for them; but it inspired them to strive for the top. And rising to the top is what they did by placing third at Hibbard's Competi- tion at Valencia High School in January, and taking second place at Knott’s Berry Farm in December. These exciting achievements were the first in this team’s ten-year history. Riding a new wave of spirit, they performed at pep rallies, football and basketball games, and were inspired by everyone at RHS to give their best. I 4 Back Row: L to R Becky Wasscll. Events planned for their performing season were varied. They participated in the “Night Against Crime Run in San Diego. Also, they performed in all football games helping to keep the spirit moving. During Christmas vacation they played carols in various malls, and at the Ramona Mobile Estates. For their second year the Jazz Band played at the basketball games and pep assemblies. They helped to make our school spirits at Ramona High stronger than ever. Band students take this class for music appreciation. The band mem- bers appreciated each other’s support during practices and various events. They worked very hard this year improving overall performance greatly. This year's A.S.B. tried to do exactly that. Many things were added this year for the first time, such as the offices of Athletics Commissioner and Histori- an. These positions were added because A.S.B. needed to grow along with the rapidly growing student body. This year was also a first for school videos. Many activities were taped by A.S.B. so students who missed the activity, or just wanted to see it again, could view it in the A.S.B. room. The Friday activity period was also new this year. It provided a period in which, depending on the week, either an assembly was held, or there was a class or club meeting. A.S.B. also helped with the PTSA, and developed new line items like clothes and books for the Student Store. Another new addition was, of course, their advisor Mr. Gallion, who learned right along with them. The class presidents became voting members of the Executive Council this year as well, which was a first for Ramona High School. This year A.S.B. helped to “build a better future” for Ramona High School and for future students as well. Arc you talking to me? This year's goal for the RAMONA HI-LIFE newspaper continued to be excellence in production. Several subtle changes were initiated, including in-depth article subjects and giving each issue a theme. This was also the first year that the H1-L1FE went without one editor-in-chief. Instead, there was a committee of four individuals who served more as a board of directors. All of this combined to make an outstanding publication that produced an informative student, faculty, and community news service. Top Row: Denise Ragsdale, Wendy Nash. Mr. Bcvil, Robbie Nelson. This year’s Yearbook staff, led by Editor Tamra DeMartini, has shown great efforts in making the '87-’88 El Ano a book to remem- ber. We chose the theme “A New Wave Of Spirit,” which was great because Ramona High’s spirits were up more than ever this year. We made a special effort to carry our theme and wave motif throughout the book. Our staff took a different approach this year with book sales. Instead of dragging out the sales for months, we only sold them for one week during October. It turned out to be a phenomenal success. We sold all the books we had ordered. The staff itself this year was one of the best in a long time. They have all been hard-work- ing and willing to give up their extra time to help make this year’s book its best. Besides the editors, the class was filled with all new mem- bers. One of our main goals this year was to get ourselves out of debt and improve the style of the yearbook. We did this by selling candy, donuts, and having an End-of-the-Year dance. This took a lot of effort from everyone on the staff. It proved to be financially rewarding. We as a staff would like to thank Ramona High for putting their trust in us and for their support in helping this yearbook turn into an exciting reality. We’d also like to especially thank Mr. Ralph Williams for our theme designs. Darei Mannum, Rcncc Adams, and Tamra DeMartini combine their efforts on a layout. Angelica Guimond, hard at work? What is Amnesty International? Amnesty International is a club con- sisting of students who enjoy writing letters to other countries such as South America and Central America. This club is important because it helps peo- ple in different countries to be given their civil rights while they are being detained. This year the president of this club Lisa Glaser, the vice-president Erin Ja- cobson, and the rest of the club put together a rummage sale and blue-dot day for their special activities. They used the money for stamps and station- ary. Solfrid Gjerstad says that she joined the club because she wanted to try to help release the prisoners that were put in jail with no trial because they have political beliefs different from the government. In this wonderful program, the curriculum includes: vocational, community, recreation leisure, and domestic training. Students also experience many off-campus activities. The students have jobs in food service at the Wild Animal Park and at Pizza Hut. Some also have assembly jobs at Homestead Ceiling Fans. They are paid for these jobs through a state- funded program for Special Ed students called Workability. And with this money, four of the students have bank accounts which they some- times use when they all go to the North County Fair to shop and learn other skills. They also do menu planning, and then go to the grocery store to buy the items that they will need. One of the other many things that the students do is go out to lunch once a week to practice their skills with ordering and money usage. Their transportation to these projects include the FAST system and city buses. Two of the students will be graduating this year and will go into Supported Work Programs which assist in finding paid employment in Ramona and help the students to maintain this meaningful employment through job training and working with the student and the employer. These students will hopefully use the many skills they gave learned to go on and lead healthy and happy lives. 1. Frank clocks out after a bard day’s work. L.-R.: Teacher Aid Susie Wilson. Advisor Mrs. Geldert and the 110 active dancers put in long hours after school and a lot of extra energy to make the concert a success. The entire company worked hard since Septem- ber so that on April 9, 1988, Opening Night, EVERYTHING would go well. The costumes were colorful, the dances energetic, and fun and excitement filled the air. The atmosphere made you feel like dancing. Everyone, both dancers and the audience, caught “Dance Fever,” proof that the Dance Concert was fantastic. 121 DRAMATIC SOCIETY The Black Friars Dramatic Society, headed by Mr. John Bowman, was busy in the preparation of their spring play. This year, the Drama organization put on THE LILIES OF THE FIELD. Anxiety and excitement filled all the members of the play as Opening Night approached. Would someone forget their lines? Thanks to the group working cooper- atively together, the play turned out to be a hit. Thanks to the sponsorship of Sun Valley Market, the society was able to raise enough funds from the donated Coke machine. The cast once again took their annual trip to Laurence Welk Theater for a fun night of din- ing. We'll be looking forward to the growth of this organization that promotes Dramatic Arts. 122 123 Visitors From Far Away Back: Micaela Pcirone, Solfrid Gjerstad. Front: Nicola DcBlasio. Holger Knaut, Boris Klatt, Thomas Peterson. As an exchange student, Thomas Peterson of- ten gets the question, “How do you like Ramo- na?” His answer is “I like it here, a lot. The family 1 stay with is great, he says, “1 have made a lot of good friends.” He enjoys playing soccer, and the weather. There are many differences be- tween Sweden and America, and the school sys- tems are completely different, although he can’t compare the two; he loves both of them. Solfrid Gjerstad of Rodven, Norway, thinks that Ra- mona is nice and the landscape is pretty, but the town is boring. Though school is different, most of the people are friendly. She enjoys going to the beach, shopping, playing soccer and piano, singing, dancing and scamming on guys. She misses her family and friends, the food, and mom's homemade bread. “The U.S. is great,” she says, “because there are so many possibilities and you can do whatever you want.” This year’s Foreign Exchange program was very much a success. Our school was lucky enough to have six visitors. Each one came from a different and exciting country, but, according to them, our little town of Ramona was fascinating. They experienced an entirely different culture. They lived with people who spoke entirely different languages, ate different foods, and lived in different ways. Holger Knaut, from Hannover, Germany, says that Ramona is a nice, small town that is not much different from his home- town in Germany. However, the school system here is both different and easier. He misses his older sister, Siekc, and his friends. For fun, Holger enjoys participating in Jazz Band, playing his guitar, and meeting different people. “The best things about America,” he says, “are the weather and the beach.” Micaela Petrone, of Milan, Italy, really enjoys Ramona even though she says there is not much to do. She likes the warmth and all the greenery, and especially horseback riding. Although RHS is a small school, the atmosphere is nice, and the school activities are fun, unlike in Italian schools where there isn’t much social activity. Even though Mickey misses her friends, she says that she would love to stay here on a more permanent basis. Boris Klatt from Hamburg, Germany, likes Ramona, but says that it is quite small and there isn’t too much to do. He says that our school system is totally different from and more strict than in Germany. One of Boris’s favorite pastimes is working on cars, so he is sure to be seen in auto shop everyday. He misses his brother, friends, and German food; but he thinks that the weath- er, the beach, the people, and cars are the best things about America. Originating from the busy urban environment of Milan, Italy, Nicola DeBlasio really likes Ramona just because it is a little country town. He says that living here has given him a wonder- ful opportunity to learn different aspects of our American Cul- ture that he never knew before. His family and friends are what he has missed the most; but here in Ramona, he really enjoys the family he’s living with. He also likes our friendly American people and our beaches, and loves seeing all our San Diego sights. “It’s been a pleasure staying with you all,” Nicola said. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA! A treat for the incoming officers! The lighting of the candles. Future Farmer's Faces light up! Do you promise to ... ? This class helps students to increase their sense of personal worth and accomplish- ments. The students enjoy working with their hands and producing products. This year they have had many activities such as a barbeque, contest judging, speech con- tests, and project competitions. These all helped raise money for the Southern Re- gion Field Day, attended by more than four hundred high school students county-wide. On this special occasion, other San Diego schools came to Ramona High School and observed and enjoyed their FFA accom- plishments. This was the first Field Day Ramona had ever had. Mr. Bill Bowman enjoys teaching this subject because it is an important area of personal interest, and it has been all his life. 4 126 Future Homemakers of America The Future Homemakers of America (FHA) organization’s purpose is to provide leadership skills and promote learning in the field of Home Economics. Club advisor Penny Childers met with eigh- teen club members once a month. The club was very effective this year. They had several bake sales, and the club also collected money for needy causes like Runaway Centers, the elderly, and the abused children. The club rec- ognized these needy causes and took action. 127 Terisa Law, Stacy Pilkington, Theresa Hammons. Tammy Bain. Ruth Painell. Sanchcrrc Casteel. Trahcr Goff, Mrs. Childers. Service With Key Club is an important organization here at Ra- mona High School. This organization is run by Mr. Harris and he enjoys the small group of students who are involved. Even though this is a service club, the students still enjoy themselves. The fifteen members have worked at the Kiwanis 10K Father’s Day Run. assisted at the Senior Citizens Center, and helped SADD with many of their activities and assemblies. Ramona High School should be proud to have such an enthusiastic club. Thanks for helping the community and thanks for helping R.H.S. develop a new wave of spirit! Key Club: Chris Haas. The five members have viewed a film about different teaching styles and reviewed the five- step lesson plan. The club meets several times a month on the assigned club days. We are looking forward to this club’s suc- cess in teaching the future students of Amer- ica. 129 Dclisa Harrison. Guadalupe Romero. Susie Wilson. Cara Leach, ADVISOR Mike Gallion. Backpacking was one of the new clubs this year. Advisor Bob Nabors planned several trips for the year. They had a desert hike in March, and an overnighter in Aqua Tibia Wilder- ness Area in April. In July they will be taking a week hike in the Sierras. Mr. Nabors welcomed the opportu- nity of working with the boys and teaching them about wilderness areas, camping, and trout fishing. The students really enjoyed being outdoors, learning new survival skills and being able to complete a 50 plus mile hike in the High Sierras. These boys had to be in good physical condi- tion and have proper backpacking gear. Down The Slopes The 1987-88 Ski Club was full of eager people waiting to tackle the slopes. In December, the Ski Club headed for Utah for a fun-filled week of skiing. This year the Ski Club took a dif- ferent route, and went water-skiing during Spring Break. The spirited members met on club days to organize their trips. Members felt that it was well organized and lots of fun. They hoped more people would join the Ski Club next year, so they can plan another ski trip. This club was one of the most popu- lar clubs and is looking forward to another year of chills and thrills. Climbing To The Top The purpose of the R.H.S. Golf Club, under Mr. Hardi- man’s and Mr. Bossenbrook’s direction, is to promote in- terest in and support of the golf program. There were no seniors this year, but the younger members were very determined. One of the fundraisers this year included a Long-Drive Contest. The money earned was used to buy golf equipment for the team. The members also attended a golf lesson at the San Vicente Golf Course where they watched Dorf-on-Golf to learn new and better techniques. The group enjoyed meeting on club days, watching videos on golf, and preparing fundraisers for the upcoming golf season. Golf Club Bryan Wagner practicing putting. ChucLan Lantow practicing on her driving skills. Drafting Club The purpose of the RHS Drafting Club is to explore the C.A.D.D. (Computer Aided Drafting). This modern ma- chine helps the students to experiment with their ideas on a screen. The club also meets to socialize and have fun. They often meet during lunch, and on club days. They have about twelve people who are actively involved in the club, with Mr. McMicken as their advisor. 132 Student Trainers The 1987-88 student trainers were a dedicated and energetic team working all three seasons — fall, winter, and spring. This year’s were the most in- volved and the largest number of partici- pating students in Ramona High School sports and injury care and prevention history. Tina Brooklyn and Gina Tamburrino began the season during football’s “Hell Week beginning August 24, 1987, and keeping the same hours as the players. Elizabeth Cobian joined the team in the early fall and Natalie Anzaldua. Teresa Hanmond, Kristi Barrett, and Maggie Vallender just prior to winter season. This year the student trainers became CPR-and First Aid-certified. They cov- ered 90 percent of Ramona's home sport events, each student working 3 to 24 hours a week in addition to participating in ASB, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, etc. Among the injuries these skilled stu- dents were called to assist with were shoulder dislocations, fractured noses, fingers, arms, sprains strains to ankle, knee and muscle pulls. Elizabeth Cobian and Natalie Anzal- dua will graduate this year. We will miss them. The 1988-89 Bulldog athletes were unusually fortunate to have so many experienced student trainers re- turning. They also help in organizing and making all home athletic events run smoothly. The club has led board members on a tour of the RHS campus, and has greeted visiting athletic teams during home events. The fourteen active members met in the ROP Food Trades building at least once a month, and during club activity days. The Ambassadors Club has done a wonder- ful job in making everyone feel welcome at Ramona High School. 134 California Scholarship Federation What is CSF? Many students have asked the same question. The California Scholarship Federation is a club for high academic achievers. Students who have participated for four semesters are life members and receive special gold seals on their diplomas and school records. Members of CSF compete school-wide for cash awards and state-wide for the Seymour Award, which is considered the highest academic award given to high school graduates. Most colleges and uni- versities give special attention to CSF members and many set up scholarships especially for them. These are some of the many reasons students find it to be very important to be a part of CSF. You get so many benefits and opportunities for the future and have fun all at the same time! Mr. Hill has been the advisor for the last ten years of one of this school’s most important clubs. They have had a suc- cessful year with a good-size member- ship in the club. They had their annual candy sales to pay for their trip to Dis- neyland, something every member of CSF looks forward to. This year has gone well for them and they look forward to even better years in the future. First Semester -r Nizam Najd, Denise Grabau, Carl Rosscnau. David Saber. Thomas Robcrshaw, Bic Ha. In the be- ginning of the year things were a little shaky, but the success grew after the Awareness Week which was held in No- vember. The week started off with a mock accident staged out in front of the school. The students worked closely with the Ra- mona Fire Department to make the simula- tion a success. The rest of the week was full of various activities such as a balloon lift- off, speakers, and a multi-media presenta- tion called “Friday Night Live”. SADD held a fundraiser on Halloween weekend called “Fill the Boot for SADD,” in which they earned over $700! The Fire Department also helped with that activity. As soon as the membership began to grow, more interest grew from the commu- nity also. The funds became available to start a Safe Rides chapter in Ramona, which was much needed for a long time. Hopefully, a program such as this will re- main open to students for years to come. The new officers for 1988-1989 have big goals to tackle next year. Some of them include: implementing programs at the ele- mentary and junior high school levels; keeping the Safe Rides program going strong; adopting Julian High School as a sister chapter; and, starting a peer counsel- ing program. It is difficult to fo- cus twenty-four hours a day just on one thing, especially in high school. I have been amazed at how many people really care about their future as well as the future of others. Obviously, enough people care to have kept the SADD chapter going. Yes, sometimes it was a little bit shaky, but we united our efforts and stabilized our goals. I am almost afraid to leave such a strong chapter behind, but I have no doubts about next year’s leaders. Their leadership skills will all be melted together as one, and our chapter will be stronger than ever! To all of you in SADD: I am going to miss you, but I have faith! Many of the mem- bers' goals are to become an automotive technician. Others are just interested in learning about their car and also working on other people’s cars brought into the shop. Many ample opportunities are offered to those in the club. They were privileged enough to be able to visit a G.M. assembly plant. Some students such as Mark Desko- vic, Daryll Covey, and Ben Elizaras were chosen to participate in a Trouble-Shooting competition. They participated in the San Diego County 1,000 Voice Choir which was held at Point Loma College, sang at Norton Plaza in San Diego, had their Winter Concert in Ramo- na, and sang for various community organi- zations. In this class, students learn about proper singing techniques and the creativity of mu- sic. They had new costumes this year and hoped to create a new image for the choir. Through all the fun and friendship that they created, they all enjoyed singing to- gether, and learned the values of responsi- bility and cooperation. STAT BRATS Throughout the years Stat Girls have devoted their time and capability to take accurate stats for all sports. They have been willing to take time from their personal life to commit it to their high school. There were four football Stat Girls, two who covered defense, while two recorded the offense. As one of the girls wrote, the other two spotted the plays. “They were extremely professional, dedicated, and showed up at every game. Very loyal, said Mrs. DeBacco-Weddle. In basketball there were twelve girls who wanted to take stats, but four were chosen to take them. Each girl had to go through a test to see if she was able to take on the task. The girls had to meet before the games even started with Mrs. DeBacco-Weddle and the coach, so they would understand their responsibilities. The girls had to write ten different things for each player, a very difficult job. “They had a lot of perseverance,” said Mrs. DeBacco-Weddle. The Wrestling Stat Girls were very persistent in their jobs. They had to be alert, to record the precise number of pins, take-downs, and escapes during the matches. Sandy Hattings said, “I really had lots of fun and met some really great guys. It was a wonderful learning experience for all the girls. They learned re- sponsibility by being there promptly and regularly for each game. Overall it was a positive and rewarding experience to be part of the team. Some of these classes include: Auto Shop, Computer Occupations, Drafting, Welding, Building Trades, and Food Trades. Ramona High School has one of the best Regional Occupational Programs in San Diego County, made possible by the hard work and enthusiasm of RHS teachers and students. 144 Current Events Politics The epidemic of Aids, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, has shot through the world like a bullet killing many people. There is no cure known and the death rate is rapidly increasing. On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones average took a terrifying plunge. It left many people and companies belonging to the New York Stock Exchange in total shock. Michael Gorbachev, of the Soviet Union, and his wife came to the United States to visit and talk to President Reagan about world peace. Mrs. Gorbachev and Mrs. Reagan didn’t hit it off well at the start of their visit due to the popularity and welcoming of Mrs. Gorbachev. Campaigns for the 1988 Presidential election began with Bush and Dole ahead for the Republicans, and Dukakis and Jackson in the lead for the Democrats. The Summit Meeting developed a treaty to ban medium and short-range nuclear missiles from Europe and Asia. This was the largest arms reduction in history. Oliver North aided Nicaraguan Contras from the profits of arms sales to Iran. 147 vliOERDALE Sports The Superbowl was held in San Diego at Jack Murphy Stadium. The Redskins defeated the Broncos. In Baseball's World Series, the Minnesota Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 2. NFL Rookie of the Year Benito Santiago's 34-game hitting streak was the longest for a rookie, a catcher, or San Diego Padre, and 15th longest in major league history. The 1988 Winter Olympics were held in Calgary, Canada, where the United States received a total of six medals. Brian Boitano received a gold medal for Men’s Single Figure Skating. Dcbi Thomas received a Bronze medal for Women’s Figure Skating. Jill Watson and Peter Opergard took a bronze medal in Pairs Figure Skating. Bonnie Warner took sixth in Women’s Luge. As the spotlight shone on the band, the crowd went wild. Then Salt and Pepa rocked the house, with lead vocals Shawn Cook and Michelle Alarid, Denise Ragsdale on the turntables, and Humberto Torres as the backup. Out of the five groups Salt and Pepa was the overall winner. The first runner-up was Inxs, while second was The Cure. For honorable mention there was Weird A1 and Banana Rama. The band costumes were basically casual except for Banana Rama. They caught everyone's eye with their shimmering glamorous cos- tumes. Humberto Torres stated, “When the spotlight came upon me, I just danced as if 1 was all alone. He said he wasn’t really nervous, but some of the other bands were. Due to a situation involving a man with a rifle just outside the castle, many were not able to go inside, or leave. Ramona High was also in the spotlight on News- center 39 for being the only school in San Diego County to have a breath analyzer at a school function. Even though there were these minor problems at the 1988 Winter Ball, everyone in attendance had an enjoyable and very memorable evening. 161 GREAT IN ’88 This year’s winter sports had a memorable impact on the students at R.H.S. The Dawgs were very proud. Girls Varsity Soccer went to C.I.F. where they beat Castle Park, 3-0, and Christian, 2-1. Then they went on to the semi-finals, where they had a heartbreaking loss to University City in double overtime, 1-0. Gennctta John- son made All-C.I.F. and All-League M.V.P., First Team All-League, Joanne Hamilton and Gennetta, Second Team All-League, Amy Ledwith. Kari Matson, and Kristi Smoyer. Terra Bailey and Susan Anderson merited Honorable Mentions. This year’s Boys Varsity Soccer team made it to their sixth consecutive year in C.I.F. They had a bye, being seated second, going straight to the quarter finals, beating Castle Park 2-0. After that they went to the semi-finals, but were defeated by University City, 1-0. Derek Drago made All-C.I.F. and First Team All-League. Darren Drago and Vince Gammarano also made First Team All- League. Mike Diaz made Second Team and was team Captain. This year’s Girls Varsity Basketball team worked hard to drive themselves to the top. Seated first, they went straight to the quarter finals, conquering Our Lady of Peace, then onward to the Sports Arena, where they played Lincoln. With lots of enthusiasm the Bulldogs beat Lincoln, winning the C.I.F. in their division. They moved on to State, unfortunately losing to LaMore in the L.A. Sports Arena. Boys 87-88 Varsity Basketball played Lincoln in the San Diego Sports Arena. The boys were trying for C.I.F., but they lost to Lincoln. “Playing in the Sports Arena was a great experience for the Dawgs and for Ramona fans.” The Arena became aware of the Bulldog basketball, and the excitement the team brought to R.H.S. The team was great for the community, said Coach Schaffer. Chad Nelson received First Team All-League and Jason McCleanahan, Second team All-League, while Kenny Pendell, Tony Newman, and Nate Hollingsworth were Honorable Mentions. 1. Veteran par- ticipants included Mrs. Weaver, Mrs. Owens, Mr. Ralston, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Bevill. Mr. Johnston, the teams' instructor, asked the questions which included the areas of English Grammar and Literature, Math, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Current Events, and Foreign Language. At the end of the first two battles against the Freshmen and J.V. teams, the teachers were victorious. But the teachers went down in defeat against the Varsity team. All the players enjoyed participating, and the teachers said that they would welcome a rematch against the Varsity. 164 Bulldog Nightlife Around town the Bulldog Nightlife shows brightly. Many teenagers can’t wait until the end of the week rolls around so they can hit the Ramona Twin Cinema or the famous La Cocina for flautas. Other places they look forward to might be the Net, Lover’s Lane, Del Taco, or the various parties at friends' homes around town. For the younger crowds the 7-11 walls sound nice to hang out by. For the Skaters, well, anywhere there’s a curb or hill will be good enough to keep them entertained. Some older kids take the alternative and leave town for some dancing at After Dark or the Distillery to rock out to some Punk or New Wave, or maybe they’ll even get in a round of miniature golf. Whatever they choose, the Bulldogs are always finding ways of having a great “Night Life.” Friday Night Fever! 166 High School dances were sooooo exciting! 167 Mom. could you come pick me up? It’s 2:15; students everywhere rush to their lockers, grabbing their unwanted books, and practically run to their cars. Some rush home to catch the last few minutes of their favorite soap operas, while others may have more important plans. For the rest of us, getting to work on time is a top priority. More and more students are going out into the real world and earning money for themselves and their futures. Most parents want their teens to pay for their own cars, car insurance, gasoline, clothes, and any kind of entertainment. “We don't have any choice, said Devon Reed, “if we want to have fun we’ve got to earn money first.” Not all parents encourage their teens to have jobs. Some students receive low- er grades, and don't turn in their home- work in time. “We have jobs, and we have school work, and a lot of times we have to choose one or the other because we don’t have time for both.” said Jodi Winter. Some students don't need to have a job, just the extra spending money. “If you want extra spending money other than the necessary things your parents provide, then you’ve got to get a job,” said Angelica Guimond. So whether it’s working for a pay- check as a means of having a good time, or just keeping their cars too, students are having their fair share of work exper- ience overall. MAKING MONEY It’s always fun having that extra person around to share some fond memories with; who knows, maybe someday she or he will be your wife or husband. Without these special people, who would give you that ex- tra shove to get things done or that special hug you need when you’re down? These people will always hold a special place in our lives. Dana Novak and Danny Moser have been together two years. Dana said, “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it’’. David Ghering and Michelle Hill replied, “We’ve been going out for one year and have loved every minute of it”. Kim Maclnnes and Kenny Pendell have been going out for eight months and they affirmed that with- out each other, life would have no meaning. Who ever these people might end up with in the future, they will always remember their high school dream boats. Two of a Kind! -’• • 1. Chris Haas and Tonya Pierce 2. Jason Waite and Jennifer Abeel 171 TRENDS The one thing that nearly all students have in common are the styles of clothing and accessories they wear. Students tend to be “trendy , wearing only the clothes that are popular with the rest of the student body. Many of these popular items become trends, and this year we had lots to choose from. Acid-wash clothing (a faded blue denim) was extremely popular with students, and in order to blend in with the crowd you had to have at least one pair of jeans or a jacket made out of such denim. T-shirts were very popular, especially brands like Jimmy’z and T C surfer shirts. These shirts were worn by girls and guys alike, along with the one thing that will never go out of style, Levis. Not only do you have to worry about clothes, but also what’s going to cover your feet. Hiking boots were popular, along with a wide assortment of tennis shoes, such as Vans, British Knights. Reeboks, and, of course. Converse high tops. Clothes in pastel colors like peach, pink, and aqua, as well as dark colors such as black, gray, olive green, and rust were pop- ular this year. Bright colors were quite pop- ular for Bermuda and surfer shorts for both girls and guys. Baggie shirts which were favorites this year were sported in many of these colors. One of the most popular trends, the one the guys liked the best, was the shorter hemlines. The mini-skirt was back, more than ever, and most girls on campus had one. Wavy long hair was quite the rage for high school girls. Most girls found it hard to participate in this one style due to last year’s short-hair trend. Looking for some- thing to pull back their hair with, girls turned to “poofy” rubber bands and bright hair clips. All of these trends will be gone some time, but this year they were the thing! 172 KM SPECIAL MEMORIES OF 1987 Two of the most talked about events at R.H.S. are the A.S.B. convention and Prom. During the 1986-87 school year both were a tremendous success. The annual A.S.B. convention was held as usual in the R.H.S. gym. Along with the candidates, approximately 125 delegates gathered to witness the election of new A.S.B. officers. Prom, the other big hit of the year, had the romantic setting of the Grand Tradition in Fallbrook. Couples started with dinner and then were off for an evening of fun including carriage rides and magical walks around the pond. Both events helped to make last year’s memories special. 4 5 1. According to Lisa John- son, “Everyone respects you a lot more, not just the underclassmen, but other upper- classmen too.” In the past two years they matured a lot and learned many new things. Mr. Jamison, the instructor, could be seen every day after school in the passenger’s seat holding on to the door of that ’87 metallic- blue Nova, with a kind of concerned look on his face. Stay off of the roads between 3:00 and 5:00 o’clock Monday through Friday. Watch out for that Nova as you see it screeching and lurching down the street. Most RHS Sophomores responded enthusiastically to new activi- ties and a revamped Friday schedule. They also liked the after-school activities. Nicole Halverson said, “There should have been more pep assemblies than club meeting days.” She loved watching people goof around and have fun during lunch activities. Oneactivity that she really enjoyed was the Hot Buns competition. Most of the Sophomores liked the spirit andparticipation their class had this year. Maria Cordoba said the dances were great because more students were going. Maria was also glad to see more people showing up at the volleyball, basketball, and football games. Lisa Vitale thought that the assemblies on drug and alcohol abuse were useful and she would like to see more of these at Ramona High. It’s obvious the Sophomores were really a fun-loving group who appreciated the excitement of all the activities and new-found school spirit. High school affords great opportunities for everyone. If you can say that 1987-88 has been a great year for you, it is because you made it that way. The attitude we bring to this experience is the key ingredi- ent in making it a success or a failure. Positive thinking, and the effort to back it up, makes all the different. Failure comes when people expect to fail and do nothing to prevent it. I wish success for all of you. Ramona High School is a good place, and your attitude makes a difference.
