It's a time to spend with friends, often do- ing little more than talking. Sometimes it is necessary to find a secluded area and spend time studying for a dreaded exam. It gives us a much needed break to gather the courage to face the rest of the day. Lunch is a time to relieve classroom wrought tensions; a time to re- lease excess energies; a time for planning the weekend's ac- tivities. Often we pile into our cars and head for McDonald's or Jack-in-the-Box, but it is not unusual for us to opt to stay on campus and just be ourselves. Lunch 13 4. The infi- nite cycle of school (in which we were all entangled); however, tended to drain the energy out of most. For relief and recuper- ation, students chose to step out of the mainstream at times, hoping for a little escapism, hoping to escape reality. This daydreaming is enforced in many ways. Dozing on the front lawn proved a favorite at lunch (even, at times, during class!), or right after, or before school. If one took a jaunt through the parking lot, a low din could be heard filtering through cars. These theraputic vibes sustained many stu- dents from day to day. Others simply chose to be bizarre, to let off excess pressure or steam. Then there were those who chose neither craziness nor do- cility, but complete self-absorb- tion. Sound familiar? Those were the people with the glazed eyes or the people sprawled out in the shade of the nearest tree. Yes, without these bouts of apathy and detachment, it would have been double the task, for a great many students, to survive the daily routine of school. 14 Student Life Stan relaxes after a hord day. Student Life 17 Class of '86 I Senior Class Officers Some of the most spirited and involved of the student body were the senior class officers. Participating in a wide array of inter and extra curricular activities; they were well suited to represent senior class inter- ests. Among their duties are to plan the senior trip, organize senior ditch day, and see that graduation runs smoothly. The senior officers contrib- uted a lot of time to ensure that our senior year was the best. Thanks. ft K 1. Kory Martenson — Member 2. Lance Brown — Vice President 3. John Schmutz — Secretary 4. For some it was just another school year, for others it wos a lost chance to redeem oneself for past deeds, but for most it meant the beginning of an end. Students wishing to attend college hod to make the best grades possible for their applications in the following year. Not only did the academic intensity peak, but Junior yeor seemed also to bring student involvement in school activities to a peak: sports, student govern- ment, dance, academic league and similar events composed these activi- ties. Junior year obviously played an important role in bringing about the full enjoyment of High School. The class of '87 finally had some school status and they made the most of it. Lunch time and passing break were nightmares. “Where is room 31 ' they wondered, but their intense fear surmounted the urge to ask someone or pull out their little maps. The panic increased as they dashed around looking for their class, when all of the sudden there it was . . . Room 31! Suddenly, from behind a closed door, came four Senior guys. They appeared to be giants hovering over me. They grabbed me, lifted me off the ground and carried me over to a blue, dirty, half filled trash can. All I could do was keep repeating, Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk. It seemed like forever, being set slowly down in the bin. The guys skipped off, giggling under their breath. I sat there, my face was as red as a lobster. The six students have adapted into the rigors of Ramona High School and into the California Lifes- tyle. Each of the students have met new people and have been involved in the various activities around campus, and off. Although adapting to a new lifestyle is near impossible these six students have achieved the impossible. Grammatically Speaking You want the essay tomorrow?'' asked the distraught stu- dent. I will never be able to write four pages on Geoffrey Chau- cer! This was one of the common complaints of many R.H.S. Eng- lish students. Ranging from Mrs. Mihaliks first year college prep English class, to the demands of Mr. Bowman's composition class. The work load was exhausting: reading, grammer, vo- cabulary, literature, mythology, composition, all courses con- tributing to an already full course of studies. Most students, however, were willing to extend themselves, aware that today's extra effort could well prove tomorrow's advantage. Cathy Malone in deep concentration. Andrea Barr waiting for her next assignment. Mathematics . . . Yes! The Joys of algebra exploring, Teacher says it isn't boring, But I can't hear him through the snoring. We have, during this past year, come to understand too well this saying. Unfortunately, we all understood this saying too well this past year. Because of the raising of the general requirements, students spent more time in math classes. Whether it was in Geometry, algebra, or Kulbacki's mind-wrenching Calculas, we all had our analytical triumphs and tribula- tions. Logical thinking proved the keystone in understanding all of this. Logical thinking, as a necessity in mathematics, was what Mr. Kulbacki, Mr. Hardiman, Mr. and Mrs. Diob, Mrs. Mixer, and Mr. Bear were trying to instill in the students' minds. In daily life, death and taxes can be counted on; in high school there is Math homework. This results of such homework was what the teachers based their lessons on. This incurred the understanding (most of the time) which Ramona High School strove for not only in the math depart- ment, but in the rest as well. 94 Mathematics Mathematics 95 96 Academics Wierd Science All of the science instructors hove really worked their students this year! Luckily the '85-'86 year was able to use the newly built science room. This has been very helpful to everyone. Although some of the students didn't like the idea of dissecting such things as sharks, worms and turtles, most liked the idea of participating in the late April field trip to San Diego's Wild Animal Park. Science students range from freshmen in Physical Sci- ence to seniors in Physics. This year has been of the best science years in the History of Ramona High School. Thanks to the new science room and the people who made it possible. How many times do I have to tell you, oil and water don't mix! It's your turn to Dissect today Lisa. So when is it going to explode Robert? i Building A Better Future The industrial shop, along with its vo- cational merits, proved beneficial to the general student body and campus. Of- ten the auto shop was visited in hope of bringing students cars back up to par. These visitors were not only students but also teachers who had their car trouble as well. The metal shop also pro- vided helpful. The tin snowman placed on the lawn earlier in the year serves as a reminder of the students efforts when involved in such activities. There were individual student projects assigned. Where's the switch? This work requires finesse boys. . . . And this is a tire. 98 Academics Students prepare to use a handsaw in woodshop. Mr. Handell coaches a student. Stan Clancy troubleshoots a car. Is this rubber? Sparks fly as a student lets out his aggression in metal shop. Academics 99 Bulldog Business The future is the main idea kept in mind for those students taking business related courses. This year the business department has approximately 20% of the student body at Ramona High School pass through its portals in hopes of attaining a broader spectrum of busi- ness know-how. Many of the students use their skills to enter the business world when they complete high school. These students were taught the ba- sics of business and given the opportu- nity to improve their skills in computer- ized programming, accounting, short- hand and typing. 100 Academics Ms. Leitlein conducts a timed typing class. Tracy and Michele hard at work. What do I do now? Business 101 Team Solves Problems As a relatively young organization, the North County Academic league provided in- terested students an opportunity to compete in intra- and inter-league competition. Coached by Jim Johnson, Seniors Gove Allen, Chris Kitchen and Vince Virgilio led the varsity team to take third place in the league. Ques- tions were answered on subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, art, drama, literature and innu- merable others. The organization gave the students a chance to demonstrate their scho- lastic and academic prowess. The JV team discusses a problem before giving an onswer. Our only win occurred during their second game when they totally dominated and shut-out the Coronado Islanders 28-0. However their two best games took place against the highly rated Fall- brook Warriors and San Marcos Knights. Against Fallbrook the 'Dog de- fense shut down the number one ranked offense in the county. This cre- ative endeavor demanded hard work, as well as time and dedication from the dancers. This year's dance concert re- quired dedication for more than one reason. The students had to find an ad- visor to supervise their project, as well as choreographing the dance routines for the concert. This process was rushed this year because the performance date was moved up two weeks to the second weekend of March from the traditional end of the month performance. Senior Slave Day A Ramona High School tradition that raises money for the Senior class' excursion day. All of the Superlatives are auctioned off to any- one of the student body or faculty. Then they become servants. This year there was a wide range of slaves, from Aunt Jemima to Baby Huey. The slaves performed various tasks such as pulling their masters around on wagons, carrying them on their backs, holding umbrellas over their heads, and feeding their masters grapes. If the slaves refused to do a task they either had to beg for their masters forgiveness or pay them back the amount that their owners paid for them. So around campus there were various slaves on their knees begging for for- giveness. All in all, slave day may be a day seniors dread, but at least it is fun! 156 Activities Centennial Convention The Annual Ramona High School Nominating Convention was held on April 18, 1986. It was special this year because 1986 marked Ramona's Cen- tennial Birthday. The students rallied to the cause: Don Maclnnes told us ALL the facts about Maine, we learned that New Mexico has plenty of Jose Cuervo Tequilla, and Tarina Annichor- ico claimed that Maui Wowi comes from Hawaii. The delegation did man- age to complete the nominating proce- dures through all the chaos. The special guest speaker for the '86 nominating convention was Steve West of 9IX. He came to Ramona High School not to speak about the radio business, but to share his experiences in leadership with the student body. Colorado's claim to fame states, We've got gog- gles, we've got beanies, we've got poles, WE'VE EVEN GOT SNOW! So come to honest Dove's Ski Land ... 158 Activities A.S.B. Convention 159 Associations A Break Through In Spirit This year the A.S.B. was very involved with the stu- dent body. Their goal was to bring the students closer together and unite in bulldog spirit. They planned weekly class activities and lunch competitions to liven up the week. They also planned for the first time, and drum-off and a winter-fest. After the first semester our A.S.B. Activities Com- missioner, Nicole Alarid, graduated early. Charlie Gil- martin took her place working hard to make the sec- ond semester as exciting as the first. Our commissioner of Sales and Concessions, Mandy Schultz, was able to purchase two new cash registers for the student store. These have proved quicker and easier, in keeping inventory for Mandy and her helpers. This year was also the first year that the A.S.B. had their own class and classroom. Directed by Warren Roper, the class, Leadership, has given them more time and peace to organize activities and achieve their goals. mtotth? Mandy Schultz works in the student store at lunch. Sometimes the yearbook staff stayed after school to meet a dead- line; and not just for a couple of hours. Some staff mem- bers could be seen on campus until nine or ten o'clock at night. We also had to share a room with three English classes and two drama classes. But it was really a lot of fun creating new ideas for this yearbook ... it was also very frustrating to have to change a whole page, or try to make pictures fit. We were all more or less a team whose ultimate goal was to meet each deadline and get the book out on time. Our goal was never very easy. Some people took the class because they thought it would be “kick back , an easy “A. But they soon found out that it wasn't all fun and games. As a matter of fact NONE of it was fun and games. Sometimes your pictures didn't turn out as expected, sometimes your pictures didn't turn out at all. But all the hard work and headaches must have been worth it because look at the final product . . . ! Heather Davies crops a picture. Kellie Eakes decides which picture to use. Editor Elaine K. Cheerleading Above The Rest The Varsity cheerleaders were not only a team, they were a fam- ily! Even though they didn't attend a competition, they still had an ex- citing and challenging year. There were some problems in the begin- ning of the year, but they were soon overcome, which brought the squad closer together making their enthusiasm that much stron- ger. All of the cheerleaders really got together and made the school's spirit much stronger than it's ever been. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders came into the scence with a lot of school spirit. It took a lot of dedica- tion, not to mention strain, to prac- tice everyday after school to get everything just perfect. There were some conflicts because of that, but just as the Varsity cheer- leaders, they handled it. Their ready smiles and great attitudes at every game made everyone want to get up and cheer. They really fit in great with the rest of the cheer- leaders. The Frosh cheerleaders with all of their spunk came into Ramona High School with great expecta- tions. They were really an excel- lent team with a lot of new ideas to present to the others which made things easier and a lot more excit- ing. All of the cheerleaders were proud to be a part of this school! All of the cheerleaders in action. “We didn't do anything wrong, honest. 167 CHEERLEADING Alright Bulldogs! soys Laurie Monno. DRILL TEAM TALL The Ramona High School Drill Team, advised by Susie Maximo, upheld its honorary title R.H.S.' Claim to Fame (given it by teacher and athletic coach Bill Tamburrino), by claiming once again a first place title in the large military division at South Western Specialty Clinics Disneyland Competition. This highly spirited squad displayed a motivated sense of school pride, thoughout the football and basketball seasons, with its percision perfect routines. The all girl, twenty-'man' squad led by Captain Stephanie Max- imo, first lieutenant Wendy Shidner, and lieutenants Marijane Galusha and Lina Macias practiced approximately 560 total hours throughout the sum- mer and the '85-'86 school year, enabling this group of dedicated girls to gain a respectful position among rival schools. SWING FLAGS Tall Flag captain Frances Ortiz with Deanna Ely. When the 1985-'86 season opened it was apparent that this year's swing flag team was one of the best that Ramona High School had seen in a logn time. The students at R.H.S. attributed this to the briskly paced routines and fresh new style set to a variety of dance music. The Ramona High School flag team, under the advisorship of Sue Hoskings, had one of its most successful years ever placing third in summer competition at Long Beach State with captain Liane Macias placing a prud second in Hibbards Individual Competition. Flag team: Deedra Hosking, Liane Macios, Bernadette Leppink, Ria Swycaffer, Kay Tozer, Cheri Theriac, Rene Adams. 7 Deedra Hosking performs at a pep assembly. The RHS treble choir has had a very busy year, giving 4 performances in Ra- mona in December and a series of per- formances at Knott's Berry Farm. On March 4, they joined the 1000 voice choir for a performance with many San Diego county schools. We were proud that Monica Wiesner was chosen as one of the soloists. The Spring perfor- mances include contemporary songs and choreography. Choir: Morgan Mock-Rose, Michelle Jones, Dezra Allen, Tommie Carter, Monica Wiesner. The band playing the fight song before a football game. Marching Band Under the direction of the new band director, Mr. Buskirk, and drum major Julie Lewis, the Bulldog Marching Band showed a marked improvement since last year. Competing in various events, the band demonstrated that size is not directly proportioned to the quality of performance. Though the band com- prised of only sixteen members, they faired well in several events. In the solo and ensemble festival, two members re- ceived superior ratings. Some of the other places they played at were Knott's Berry Farm, The Ramona Days Parade, the opening of the historical society (at which they received T.V. coverage) the centennial celebration of the town hall, and opening ceremonies at the James Dukes Elementary School, and the Olive E. Pierce Junior High School. Most of the band is comprised of freshmen and sophomores so there are several years left for the group to further develop. At about mid year students began seeing Macintosh im- provements which equaled cleaner copy, fewer errors and clearer layouts. With Munoz as the new dance instructor here at R.H.S., the dance classes have real- ly grown to higher dancing levels. Mrs. Munoz emphasized on the differences be- tween modern dance and jazz dance, which taught the students many new tech- niques. Everyone put a lot of effort in dance and in the concert. Although there was a shortage of tape recorders, every- one got into groups and shared them, which was very helpful in saving money for next years dance classes. Under the guidance of Mr. Bowman, the play Arsenic and Old Lace was a big success, every actor and actress really got involved and played their parts well. It was very hard work trying to get everything organized and set to per- fection but staying after school almost ev- ery day really payed off. This was also Mr. Bowman's first year in play directing and he really did a good job. The setting for the play took many hours each day to build but that also payed off because it looked authentic. Before they got that setting put together they had to make do with tape all around Mr. Bowman's room for boundary lines to where certain places were. All of the acting was very good and they really kept the audience's attention. I do. . . .
