1984-85 In Review What is current today will be history to- morrow. We would like to bring you a little history that was big news during this year. The popular entertainers, sports teams, and the headlines that were splashed across news- papers are all part of what made the past school year. PEOPLE William Shrader became the first human to survive an operation for an artificial heart, and is expected to lead a normal life . . . Vanessa Williams abdicated her Miss America crown after she was found to have posed for nude photographs that were later published in ' Penthouse” magazine .. . Princess Diana followed tradition by giv- ing birth to a second son. Prince Harry, who is now third in line for the crown . . . Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own body guard after serving in her homeland, India, for 35 years as prime minister . . . Jerry David Dominelli was indicted for mishandling funds in his multi-million dollar investment company .. . The town of San Ysidro became the tragic sight of a massacre when an armed gunman senselessly killed 22 people at a local McDon- ald's fast food restaurant . . . The death of the Soviet President Cher- nenko brought on a new 52 year old Russian leader Mikhair Gorbachev . . . Our school principal. Mr. Myron H. Bill was fired along with Junior High principal Mr. Ron Carter. The School Board claims that it was because the principals had differ- ent philosophies” than what the board want- ed. The students were upset by this. They skipped classes, walked down main street at lunch, and even held a student sick-out” with everyone coming back to school hold- ing unexcused notes from home. ENTERTAINMENT Prince and The Revolution became a smash hit this year with their movie and soundtrack of Purple Rain.” Their dress style was also passed on as a new fashion trend. Music Television (MTV) became a fore- most entertainment industry in it's own right polling 45% of the teen audience as viewers Dan Akroid and Bill Murray made a come back with their box office smash Ghostbus- ters.” ... Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop grossed three million dollars at the box of- fice, and made Murphy an instant star . . . The Broadway musical Cats debuted on the west coast for the first time, and proved to be a hit with all age groups . .. America fell in love with a furry little mug- wai named Gizmo in the movie Gremlins. Gremlin paraphernalia was a big hit through- out the U.S. and Canada. Madonna made her first film appearance, and captured the hearts of teens throughout the nation with her talented singing voice and music. Current Events 27

1984-85 In Review POLITICS Ronald Reagan and running mate George Bush, were re-elected in November. The Rea- gan Bush ticket won by a landslide . . . Geraldine Ferraro made history by becom- ing the First woman vice-presidential candi- date to represent a major political party . . . Nuclear Arms talks resumed between the Soviet Union and the U.S. Many citizens throughout the world formed large protest groups in favor of an Nuclear Arms freeze . . . Many abortion clinics nationwide were bombed or vandalized by pro-life supporters. The pro-life coalition was organized by peo- ple marching and sitting in the nation's cap- ital . . . Nicaragua's civil war raged during 1985. The U.S. and other world powers were in a quandry as to what action to take . . . Federal officials made major drug orien- tated arrests in Cuba and Columbia. In retali- ation. narcotic bosses in Mexico and Panama waged a personal war against Drug Control Officers and tourists . . . Plague and famine struck civil war torn Ethiopia . In response, world food organiza- tions came forward and tried to remedy the problem . . . San Diego's mayor, Roger Hcdgecock, was indicted by the district attorney and the fiar political practices board for receiving il- legal campaign contributions . . . The Senate thought that Edwin Meese, the Attorney General, was using his office to gain extra income. They held an investigation, and found that Meese was innocent. SPORTS Mark Menotti became the First wrestler from Ramona to place higher than Fifth in the San Diego Section CIF masters tournament. He went to the state wrestling tournament in Stockton at the University of PaciFic campus. Menotti then proceeded to advance all the way to the quarter finals before Finally being eliminated . . . BYU took on Michigan in the 1985 Holi- day Bowl. BYU won and solidified their number one ranking for college football in the country .. . The United States had the honor of host- ing the 23rd Summer Olympics in Los Ange- les. Our own American athletes dominated the high diving, men's and women's gymnas- tics, and the track and field events . . . The National League Champions, San Diego Padres, took on the American League Champions. Detroit Tigers, in the 1985 World Series. Four games were played in which the Tigers won three and became the World Champions. This year's world series had added excitement for all of us here in San Diego County since the First two games were played at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium The 19th Super Bowl was played at Stan- ford University in Palo Alto. The San Francis- co 49ers took on the Miami Dolphins. The 49er quarterback, Joe Montana, led his team to a great victory. Current Events 29
