RAMONA HIGH SCHOOL 1401 HANSON LANE RAMONA CA 92065 VOL. 64 1 Hello to old and new friends. Hello to teachers and classes. Hello to sports and activities. Hello to homework and early mornings. Hello to the new school year. Hello 85” When we look back on our days at R.H.S. we will be reminded of all the good times of this and years past: Our friends, our successes, our favorite teach- ers. Looking forward to the future, we will never forget the time we spent here at R.H.S. The bright faces, the happy times and remember each with a HELLO AGAIN! 2 Introduction Introduction 3 HELLO AGAIN .. . 1. Steve Baker playing peek-a-boo. Theme 5 Student ile What is exciting, fun and humorous.7 the answer is undoubtedly Student Life at Ramona High School. Student Life may also be called student in- volvement. It is important to create a spirited atmosphere. Student Life was practiced by the entire student body. There was the excitement of returning to Ramona High after a long summer vacation. We saw old friends and made new ones, finding out who had new cars and discovering the fashion trends for the upcoming year. Once school got underway, humor was brought into dull school days by student dress-up and arousing pep-rallies. The success of the football team also inspired the students and added renewed spirit and excitement to the campus. Without student participation and involvement school would be boring. Without Student Life would school even exist.7 Mondays vs. Fridays 1. Tammy Stein and Marcy Bailey arrive at school on a Monday morning. 2. Alison Campbell, Brenda Crean and Doug King leave school on a Friday afternoon. 3. Stand up for the kick-off. 8 Monday vs. Did you ever notice how true Murphy s law is . . . especially on a Monday? Mondays have been called the worst day of the week just as Fridays have been termed the day for partying and having fun. It seemed that bad luck always found its way into Mondays: heavy homework assign- ments. couples breaking up. forgetting your books and keys. The school week started off on a Monday, that had to mean something. Have you ever heard of something good hap- pening on a Monday? Garfield said it perfect- ly when he stated. I hate Mondays. Fridays, on the other hand, were what we waited for during the other four days: foot- ball games, pep rallies, parties, fun and good times. School ended and weekends began at 2:00 p.m. Friday. Good times, friends, music and laughs all tied in with the wonderful day we called Friday. When it came to Monday vs. Friday, there was no comparison. Friday 9 V The Bulldog Boutique 1. Paul Chamberlain and his pals are Black in Black. 2. The Mod Squad 3. Look at those ears! 4. And then there was Amy and Selena. 10 Fashion Fashion has a large effect on High School students. The blue jean scene and polo shirts are guys fashion wear, while the girls are into belts and braclets, leather and lace, and fluorescence. One of the most popular dress styles is mod. Fashion effects the way we feel, the way we act, and the way we think. Maybe that is why there are so many diverse personalities as well as diverse fashions. Fashion 11 6A 5. Kari Rodolf and Alison Brooking show off their contemporary style. 6. Jeans-n-things 7. Look at that ballet style! 8. The Outsiders Back To Basics 12 Academics Life at Ramona High is not all fun and games. For six periods a day we must all be in a classroom learning to think. We had to sit quietly listening to a boring lecture while our hands were ready to fall off due to taking endless pages of notes. And when our be- loved teachers weren't satisfied with the amount of work they had already given us, they joyfully gave us lengthy if not impossi- ble to be done homework assignments. Those students who took the AP courses had twice as much to be sorry for since their instructors were preparing’’ them for their college years ahead. Many spent agonizing hours the night before Mr. Bowman s term paper was due while others spent the evening divising a new way to cheat on Baniaga's biology final. Not all classes were boring though, Tambo always had a joke to liven up the mood .. . And who could forget Mr. Holt’s speeches from on top of his desk? For the most part the academics at RHS aren’t all that bad. We may not enjoy them but we do learn to live with them. 1. Daniel Bowen is cracking open the books. 2. Martin Nedcr, a computer whiz? 3. James Hill in the welding room. 4. Mr Robinson assists a student in the science lab. 3. Todd Martin designs his future. 6. Raise your hand if you're sure. 7. Mr. Jordan helping an auto student. 8. Group studying. 9. Hi-Tech kitchen arts. 10. Niki Kempi. Tom Martz, and Steve Baker hard at work in the library. Academics 13 Campus Classics 14 Campus Classics What is it that makes cars so in demand among Ramona teens? Is it the thrill of being in control of the machine? Or is it just being able to say Let's cruise?” Whatever it is that makes teens get cars, they've got them, and so does Ramona High School. What is the purpose of these cars? Some students purchase cars for the purpose of racing or showing. Some prefer trucks for four-wheeling. Nevertheless, the most com- mon reason is probably the most obvious ... transportation. The perfect method of get- ting to and from school in style and comfort, without having to ride buses crowded with little kids. As you look around R.H.S. you can see an assortment of cars. Our parking lot has obtained everything from the newest sports car to the junkiest of jalopies, and every classic in between. The Working Class A common question of how to support oneself arises during High School. Most stu- dents desire a car, Saturday night dates, and the other luxuries of a teenager and unless we are independently wealthy the only answer is to get a job. Where can you obtain one of these reward- ing occupations.' Fast Food places are where most students go for those get rich quick jobs. McDonalds houses a great number of R.H.S. students. Others seek employments in a more upstanding atmosphere such as the Country Club. The more fortunate may be allowed to go into the family business early and work in private enterprise. A job greatly cuts down on the time allot- ted in the day to spend on extra-curricular activities, homework, and sleeping may be partly responsible for the poor test scores of some students. Is a job really worth all the trouble, time, and the aggravations of a cranky boss just for that paycheck at the end of the month? — Absolutely!!! A 1. Jordan Blanchard hard at work at the mobile station. 2. Lucy Estrada behind the counter at Jack in the Box. 3. John Schmutz busy at 7-11. 4. Michelle Crean enjoys her work! 3. Eric Smith serves creatures of habit at Del Taco. 6. Mark Menotti, Aaron Bair, and Tom Mart? work together at The Old Telephone 'ompany. Jobs 17 On The Eighth Day God Created Weekends! Ramona, and her impressive geographical surroundings, offers R.H.S. students a chance for funfilled weekends. For the country western mind- ed, there are rodeos, livestock auctions, and square dances. Ramona High’s surf and desert rats enjoy easy and quick access to Southern California’s beaches and sand dunes. During football and basketball season, sports buffs of all ages have an opportunity to watch the Bulldogs take on their Avocado League rivals. She likes America better than the South Seas, because of the weather. She also likes Ramona, because it bears a strong resemblance to her village on Somoa's coast. She likes the school; however, she says people are more serious about learning. I aamealaja's school stands in contrast to those of other Foreign Exchange student s, in that there are more activities. In Somoa there are few poor people, and most everyone is polite. Though she likes America and it's people, she feels more comfortable living in Somoa. From Finland, Tiina Piensoho is spending her senior year here at R.H.S. She says that R.H.S. is easier than her school, and that Ramona has more activities. Tiina finds no big difference in the countries' people; however, the people here seem more friendly, especially the boys. Well, she likes the country and the people, so what about the town.-' Though it’s a nice little town, Tiina says that it can sure get boring. Sari Immonen arrived during the summer from Finland to spend her senior year here in Ramona. She finds California's climate appealing, and she especially likes our beaches. She enjoys Ramona High School and having the opportunity to participate in the numerous school activities. She likes Finish people more; however, she feels our boys are more gentlemanly. Sari says that America is not as free as she expected. Rita Gaspar. a senior visiting from Portugal Finds America a pleasantly different experience. She feels Americans have many opportunities, be- cause of our strong government and currency. Although she Finds America bee. she finds High School smothering and has a feeling that a Big Brother is watching. As for Ramona itself; she says Ramona is a nice LITTLE town, but I don't like living here. Although we all can attest to its smallness. Rita says that Ramona is a different experience, and because of that, she likes it. This treacherous disease is known commonly as senioritis. The symptoms are obvious: tardies, truancies, seniors reported as missing, forgotten homework, books beginning to mold in lockers, and tendencies to prefer Ronald McDonald over fifth period teachers. The everyday High School activities soon became Senior activities, such as: Pep assemblies, the line at Mrs. Celaya's window, toilet-papering, a sudden need to be in the parking lot with a car, and the all-time favor- ite Senior event: Saturday School. The alma mater becomes the old, Here we go AGAIN with the opening lines changing to, Hail to thee, the years almost over, HURRY our parting call. Shine thy light on all our effort, never let us fail. Ju- niors, be on the look-out for these symptoms next year! Senioritis 33 The Senior year. This was the year to decide about our futures, and the life that laid before us. All those decisions about college, going away, and four more years of school. One can’t help but wonder what happens after graduation. Will my friends still be close? What will college be like? How much will my life be changed? These seemed to be questions that were impossible to answer; however, with time, determination and a strong will, these questions were answered one way or another. The Senior year is by far the greatest and most memorable. The events that happened in previous years mean so much more in the final year. The excitement of everything was almost tripled. It seemed everyday was taken a little bit more seriously. The good times were so plentiful. The year came and went so fast it seemed it was hardly there at all. But the year was definitely there. It left it’s mark in our memories, never to be forgotten. In the beginning Freshmen are very nervous about the idea of High School. They set out to achieve goals and make names for themselves. Many strive to become accomplished in their own unique area. They're just starting out but we wish them the best of luck. ■ The Sophomore year is usually taken in stride (they 've had a whole year to learn the ropes). A Sophomore is in the middle — not at the top but not at the bottom. One feels very secure and content. They still have a ways to go and they seem to make the best of it. The Junior year is Filled with confidence. They've been around for awhile and are looking anxiously towards next year and are preparing for the role of campus leaders. Good Luck to our future Seniors, the class of '86. They require special abilities, coordination, quick reflexes and motivation. Throughout the year these qualities were exhibited by the players of all the sports. The Bulldogs found that with these qualities, and a lot of dedication, the playoffs were great. All the effort put forth by these teams helped make Ramona High School a well respected name in High School athletics. Football 121 Football Dignity On The Field In the 1984 season under first-year coach, Bill Clark, the varsity team began to show signs of marked improvement and proved a formidable opponent to the other Avocado League teams. Clark pushed his team, includ- ing 15 second year players, to a four and six record: the most impressive record in nearly a decade of Avocado League competition. Clark’s coaching abilities and players' devo- tion will make future Bulldog squads, teams to be reckoned with. 1. Coach Rice receives game strategy. 2. Quarterback. Many organizations at Ramona High School are set up to do just that — get students involved. This last year there was a large assortment of clubs and organizations to choose from. The organizations were established for people of all interests, from career oriented students to those who just wanted to have fun. The organizations brought fellow students closer together, taught them to work with one another to achieve common goals, and gave them a feeling of accomplishment. Without the help of the advisors, many of the clubs wouldn’t be possible, so a great deal of thanks is owed to the teachers for their time and effort. Through participation in the many varied clubs and activities that A.S.B. sponsors, I hope that you have brought added meaning to your year at Ramona also. Together we proved this year that through a concerted effort, change could be effected. Several new campus organ- izations were formed. Others rekindled interest. Our sports teams improved across the board, bringing home some long-awaited Avocado League victories. But most importantly, a new spirit has pervaded our campus, a spirit derived from active involve- ment. Hopefully that aura will continue to survive, setting the course for years to follow. What has enabled us to live the many dreams and desires that we share is a strong belief in ourselves. Never lose that. I'd like to share with you these moving words: You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. -Richard Bach Fellow graduates and friends, always believe in yourselves and you shall go far... The winter production was a comedy, THE MOUSE THAT ROARED, and was well received both nights that it ran. The department plans to put on several vignettes concerning teenagers in the spring.
