1 Table Of Contents Seniors ... Underclassmen ... Faculty ... Athletics ... Clubs and Activities ... Sponsors... Odds and Ends ... We probably wouldn’t worry so much about what people thought of us if we could know how seldom they do. Olin Miller A faithful friend is a source of strength. And he who has found such a friend has found a treasure. Keep some souve- nirs of your past, or how will you ever prove it wasn’t a dream? — Ashleigh Brilliant 10 12 ffte' -fo1 lowing tl5 NEeC. rveconnin c? 3- t lYWte- - Accept me as I am — only then will we discover each other. — Federico Fellini Common interests and ideas draw us together and unite us in friend- ship as we work together to achieve our final goal. 16 We are all so different, yet so close; a family. Seniors of 1984 we've come a long way. As freshmen we were the runts of the Bulldog litter but we had spirit! Remember the inside of trashcans and the upper-classmen who were out to get us. And how can we forget (though try as we may) our Homecoming float! But through it all we grew. With 1981 82 came further growth. We were sophomores, the wise fools,” slowly wending our way towards respect. Many of us were beginning to drive and the parking lot was flooded with new cars. Our Junior year unfolded and respect was still hard to come. We were feared by the freshmen; loved by the seniors. The powder Puff game ended in defeat. 6-22, but we vowed to be victorious our senior year. Though our Homecoming dance was successful the real challenge was to come — Prom. The highlight and the challenge of the year. Prom '83 termed one of the best proms ever. was held at the Atlantis restaurant. Seniors at last, the leaders of the Bulldog pack! This was our year and we used it well! Senior Bests. Senior victory in the Powder Puff game 20-8. and Conway Bowman and Dianna Perez crowned Homecoming King and Queen were the highlights of the first semester All too soon our high school careers reached fruition. Senior Prom; Senior Ditch Day; Graduation: Grad-Night — vale, farewell! Gone the days of innocence; in their stead the days of responsibility. What do the next ten years hold in store for us? The answer lies within each of us. The Class of '84 ... sad but PROUD we are! 17 Dana Ackerman Holly Allen: Hale. Ska. you Niko Argeres: Diggur. Ron Arndt: yoda. Tambo. Evelyn Awbrey: Ev. As juniors we united as a class and held a successful Homecoming. And remember the Powder Puff game — boy did we give the Seniors a real Challenge! And just recently we put on an outstanding Prom. We had established ourselves as a class and as individuals. Now as Sen- iors it's our turn to plan for colleges and our futures. Kevin C Varsity Football Although suffering through an 0-10 sea- son. the Bulldog varsity players experienced some highlights during the course of the sea- son. Perhaps the ultimate thrill for the varsi- ty was their trip to Hawaii where they faced a tough Maui High School eleven. The 28-6 loss in the Islands was softened by the exper- ience of the trip which will not be forgotten. Throughout the remainder of the season the varsity were victims of their own mis- takes and some very untimely injuries to key players. Even though they played well in games against El Camino, Escondido, and Orange Glen, the varsity lacked the offensive punch to win. Outstanding play during the season was provided by seniors Clark Wro- ten, Steve Toth, and Tim Nagle; the spectac- ular catches and runs of Kevin Chapman pro- vided thrills aplenty for Ramona supporters. The Girls' Tennis team had one win and thirteen losses for the season. Though this year’s record was not as good as last year’s, many of the matches were much closer than ever before. The Bulldogs lost two matches to San Marcos by a total of two points. Also they showed great improvement in tough loses to Orange Glen and San Pasqual. With Heather Davies. Jennifer Wolfield and Amy Hass returning next year the future seems bright for the Bulldogs. 89 VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY Top row: David Ledwith. Rudy Castro. Dan Brinkmier. Bottom row: Jorge Cas- tro. Randy Lepper. Ray Reine. This year’s Varsity Cross Country Team had a successful sea- son. perhaps not in the win-loss column, but in terms of improve- ment and goals of good performance in the CIF finals, we were successful. In a very tough Avocado League the Bulldog Cross Country team finished fifth with a record of 2-4. In CIF finals the team took second place in the county in the small school division. Strong performances were turned in all year by Dan Brinkmier. Rudy Castro. Jorge Castro. DaveLedwith and Randy Lepper. 1984 gives promise of a successful season. Coach Smith FRESHMEN The Freshmen Cross Country Team, like the Varsity, had a very successful and re- warding season. Off to a late start in the season with only one individual on the team at the start and by the time of our last dual meet of the season, twelve athletes competing for the Bulldogs. Every athlete who ran on this year's team showed marked improvement throughout the year. Their 2-4 league record was no indi- cation of the amount of success this young team had. Consistent performers for this year's team were Merle Reine. Erik Carter. Robert Prchal. James Willis. Mike Hansen. Lynn Coble and Chris Haworth. With a good summer of training, these individuals will make up a good nucleus for next year's J.V. team. Top row: Lynn Coble. Dave Micheletti. Robert Prchal. Gordon Stamper. Merle Reine. Jeff Butler. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY With but four letterman returning from last year's team, the Varsity girls Cross-Country squad was off to a slow start at seasons opening. Lettermen: Julie Tuberg. Susan Vaughn. Jennifer McKay and Sandy Smith, quickly realized the almost insurmountable which lay ahead. Within one week they were able to interest some unexperienced runners to the team. They were. Gloria Johnson. Amie Oliver. Dena Farley. Mi- chelle Huston. Tzeiva Wollner. Monica Weisner and Marcy Bailey. These girls demonstrated enthusiasm, which combined with their work began to pay off with successful results. This work culimated in the girls finish- ing third in CIF. Front row: Dorene Marcoux, Bette Cessna, Lisa McWhorter, Laura Wiederhoeft, Loreen Lapp, Carla Koach. This years varsity volleyball team had eleven players with only three return- ers. The team exhibited spirit, skill and determination in their high level of play against their opponents. Coach Barnes was very proud of her hard working ath- letes and their desire to improve throughout the season. With seven players returning next year and some quality players moving up from JV, the team is looking forward to the upcom- ing season, and performing some top notch volleyball manuvers on the court. J.V. VOLLEYBALL This years JV volleyball team was very young with only three returning players. They showed a great deal of improvement in their play and individual skill level this season. Coach Joyce Greer was pleased with the improvement of attitudes and team work from her players, as well as with their desire to get prepared to become future varsity athletes. With five returners for next year and additional talent comming out, the JV's are in for a great season. Back row: Karen Koach, Carol Adam, Coach Greer, Katrina Webb, Lori Church. Front row: Linda Koach, Cheryl Adam. —VARSITY— BASKETBALL The Varsity Basketball team was made up of two seniors, four juniors, and four sophomores. The early part of the season was what Coach Larry Bringham termed “a real learning experience. Only two players. Seniors Brad Jan- sen and Kevin Wade had previous varsity experience, and Brad was out the first six weeks of the season with a knee injury. Later Don Maclnnes and Aaron Bair were put out for part of the season. The team improved during the course of the season, becoming very competitive during the second half. Sophomore Mike Pendell was the leading scorer while Senior Kevin Wade took second highest scoring honors. With eight of ten players returning next year to provide the keystone for the Varsity. Bulldogs Record Winningest Team Ever — Though the Bulldogs were considered an experienced team at the beginning of the season they proved themselves able to improve on last year's very impressive record and secured the same thrilling wins against difficult opponents. The Bulldogs finished the season with 18 victories and only 7 loses. Starting off the year winning 4 of its first 5 games in the pre- season. The Bulldogs headed to Imperial High for a New Year’s Basketball Tournament in which the Bulldogs won. This was the first time in Ramona's history that they were able to bring back a first place trophy. The beginning of the regular season saw the Varsity Five gain momentum and play to an 8-2 league season, good enough for the second place and a return trip to the C.I.F playoffs. VARSITY SOCCER 102 Bulldog Booters Bomb Avocado League Foes On February 7 the Bulldogs clinched the league crown with a con- vincing 8-0 win over the Escondido Cougars on the loser's field. Lead- ing into that all-important tiff, the Varsity's record stood at 8-0-1 with but three games remaining on their schedule. During the course of the season, the Booters shut out every team in the league except one; they took second place in the La Jolla Cup Tournament, and were third in the Bonita Vista Invitational. Prior to the EHS game the team had scored 61 goals, allowing their shell- shocked opposition a mere 7 tallies. Pablo Carmona was the high goal man of the season with 16 goals, he was closely followed by Lance Brown with 12; high-point Senior honors went to Mike O'Dell who penetrated the next 10 times. The season was made up of comebacks the most important being Carlsbad with a 3-2 win. The team was plagued by the loss of a few key players. It was the determination and skill of the second string players who came through for the team to win at Carlsbad. The junior varsity's high goal man of the season was Juan Carlos Martinez with 17 goals. Mike Meyers played with a total of 4 shut-outs to his credit for the season. Overall for the team the most-improved player of the season was Sean Willis. Most valuable was Robert Townesend. Co-captains for the junior varsity squad were: Al Marini and Mike Sanchez. Seniors Doug Snyder, Jimmy Row- land, Dan Fager, Tony Ramero, and Jeff Lawler more than picked up the slack created from the loss of last year's starters. Although picked to finish in the Avo cellar, the Varsity were in the thick of the league race from start to finish. Much of the talent was supplied from last year's 7-3 league JV squad. Pitch- ers Brad Berry, Troy Pearce, and Bob- by ''BIG BASS” Vaughn, all starters on last season's junior varsity, bolstered the mound corps headed by seniors Tony Ramero and Jeff Lawler. Seniors: Jimmy Rowland. Tony Ramero. Jeff Lawler. Doug Snyder, and Dan Fager. JV Baseball After four years of successful coaching on the freshman level, Coach Billy Clark took over the junior varsity team from retiring coach John Bowman. The Clark Touch was immediately experienced by members of this year's squad. Execution and teamwork, hallmarks of all Clark-coached teams, were quickly introduced to the players. Presently the band’s activities include, among other things, participation in musical competi- tions throughout the Southland. Though small in numbers and certainly little threat to the larger bands fielded by some of the area's larger high schools, the RHS band is begin- ning to make its musical mark in San Diego County. Band Director Mr. Jauregui is to be commended for his role in honoring the band’s skills to the sharpness they presently exhibit. 124 125 CHOIR The RHS Choir had many performances and ac- tivities this year, including Christmas programs for many community organizations — the Kiwanis Club, Michael's House, and the Nutrition Center. The group’s fall production was an excellent presentation of TEN LIT- TLE INDIANS an Agatha Christie classic; top billing went to Ray Carlburg. Joanne Glaudini. and David Ratinov. The play ran for four nights in early November. The spring production was the ever-popular SNOOPY!!! — THE MUSI- CAL. Starring in the late April production were Chris Kitchen as the misunderstood Charlie. Darcy Haeger as Lucy, and Craig Buffington as the canine lead. Snoopy. On the social side of the school year, the Play Productions and the Dance Company co-sponsered the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. California Scholarship Federation Back row L to R. Becky Cawyer. The Key Club is an entirely male club at our High School. Though they are not active on campus, they are active in the community. They are a non-profit organization that was formed for the benefit of the community. This younger branch of the Kawanis Club has done several things this year. They put American flags up in town on Veteran's Day. helped renovate a house for the Adult Day Care Center, and assisted with the Special Olympics. They helped the com- munity . . . Each exciting issue contained a little enjoyment for everyone. Sports. Letters, and Contemporary articles were contained in every edi- tion. Mary Vrooman. editor-in-chief, had several diffi- culties to deal with throughout the year. Mary and her staff delt with limited space, supplies, and mon- ey. The limited space was caused because the News- paper Staff was forced to share a normal classroom when they should be allowed a classroom that is souly for the newspaper. Many times important arti- cles and photographs are taken from the room by students who are not on the staff. These lifts of materials hurt only the student body. To produce a 1 newspaper, the staff needed money. They did a very good job this year. but. with a bit more money, they could do an even better job. This staff produced fair, accurate, and timely arti- cles with each edition. Though the newspaper only costs ten cents, it is well worth your money. This is a great newspaper and Staff . . . They stayed at the Mammoth Ski and Racquet Club for one week, however they were only able to ski for three days due to a blizzard which lasted two days. They held the Halloween dance and helped with the concessions at the powder puff game to raise money for their trip. They also intend to make a trip to the Colorado river during spring break BACKPACKING CLUB A small but active group of RHS students forms the nucleus of this year’s backpacking club. Modersted by Mr. Nabours of the Special Education Department, the club has been actively engaged in troopin through the paths and trails of San Diego County this year. Although most of this year’s trooping has been limited to San Diego and its environs, there are plans afoot for more extensive hikes next year; for instance, a hike up Mount Everest, a trek through the Black Forest, a forced marched through the Dakota Badlands and an overnighter to the Barona Indian Reservation. The Ramona Future Farmers is fast be- coming very active on the local and state levels; the driving force behind this new flur- ry of activity has been a group of dedicated freshmen and sophomores, whose interest stems from their having definite plans for fu- tures in the field of agriculture and related careers. The image projected of the average Aggie student is being modified by students like Shannon McClure who plans to pursue a ca- reer in Vet Medicine; Christy Hopkins, who is dedicated to realizing her hopes for a career in Agricultural Education; and Randy Lepper who is hoping to be an Agriculture Journalist. FOREIGN 1------ I EXCHANGE Felipe Porto and Maria Helena “Lena Silva This year Ramona High has two foreign exchange students, both are from Brazil. Felipe Porto came to Ra- mona from Campinas, Brazil; Lena Silva is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Arriving in time for the second se- mester Lena and Felipe will remain in Ramona until July. They both find R.H.S. much stricter than their schools: “Brazilian high schools are like American colleges — more diffi- cult, but more lenient.” Although a great difference exists between the two countries, the change has pro- vided a fun experience for both of them, From All Angles. 139 Modern Dance Club This year's R.H.S. Dance Co. was outstanding! Half way through the year Gloria Geldert (Dance Instructor) who had taught R.H.S. Dance for 15 years hung up her leg warmers. And in stepped Paula Caradine. She had a lot to learn, but caught on fast. Just in time for the 12th annual Modern Dance Concert. The students choreograph and dance their own dances for the show. The theme was Putt'in on the Ritz . It wasn't just the talent, costumes, and artwork it was the unity between the students that made the Dance Concert so special and rewarding. All of the dancers are very talented. This year the number of males in the show closely matched the number of females. This was the first year we had break and pop dancing in the show, outstanding break and pop dancers are. Craig Buffington. Kymm Glitch. Mike O'Dell, and Dave Clancy. The dancers also performed at other schools, competitions, and shows throughout San Diego County. Dance Club Officers, back row L to R. Darcy Haeger. Gena King. Debbie Dimich. Sally Pantovitch. Andy Salmonsen, and Michelle Roberts. Being an A.S.B. officer takes a lot of responsibility. This year’s officers responded well to their responsibil- ities. They united together to make Ramona High a nicer place. The year started with a successful Homecoming week, followed by the Air Band concert, hypnotist, and lunch concerts. These activities kept us well enter- tained. Despite the loss of Publicity Commissioner Shellie Walton, the A.S.B. perservered. Sue Swageerty was elected Publicity Commissioner and filled her office with energy and enthusiam. Acting as A.S.B. President for the past year has been one of my most memorable experiences of R.H.S. It has had its ups and its downs, but the ups exceed the downs by far. I have been lucky; this year I have worked with people who wanted to do their best and make a difference at this school. And that's what I wanted to do. make a difference, give it everything, and make Ramona High a better place when I left than when I entered it. I feel I have accomplished my goal. I have been on the El Ano staff for four years. As a freshman I wanted to be a photographer, but found out I liked doing layouts instead. It is a miracle this High School has a yearbook every year. Since I have been on the staff I have had three different advisors, two different rooms, eight different photographers, four different staffs, two different publishing companies, three different repre- sentatives. and NO new equipment. Sure the book may be late, but look at the circumstances. When the last deadline went in we have ourselves a big pat on the back. This year my staff has been the best in four years! The year hasn't been all problems. We do have fun too. The second semester we had an all girl staff. It was kind of like cheerleading at times. These four years being on the staff have been very rewarding. There is so much still to learn. Editor: Lisa Crean Adviosr....... Editor........ Ass't. Editor .... This year did not pass without Nation- al Conflict. The big- gest hotspots were Lebannon, Gren- nada, Central Amer- ica, and especially in El Salvador. While U.S. troops attempt- ed to keep the peace in Lebannon, the U.S. sent aid to Nic- argua, El Salvador, and other Central American Countries. In a contest against communism, these militiant actions caused strained rela- tionships at home as with the U.S.S.R.
