Table of Contents 2 SP LI We’ve Come a Long Way This is the era of opportunity for youth. We have many opportu- nities that our forefathers did not have. Yet many people don’t take time to reflect upon them. For example, today we have free public education. Everyone, regardless of sex or nationality, may attend. Education opens the door to opportunity. It can shape our future. Presently, our world is bursting with knowledge. More scientific advancements have been made in our century than in any other. Expanding knowledge has pro- duced countless occupational opportunities for everyone. This year is truly the time to realize that America is more than flags, freedom, happiness, and patriotism. It offers us a chance to better ourselves and our world. WHAT DOES BICENTEN- NIAL MEAN TO YOU? “Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you.” — Stan Cotey “I think it’s a time people should look back and see what freedom really is.” — Marla Reiss “That no other country has done so much in two hundred years.” — Tony Vaca “We’ve come a long way.” — Christy Kraus “It means spirit, happiness, and love for our country.” — Lisa Hughes WHAT PATRIOTIC FIGURE DO YOU ADMIRE MOST? “Uncle Sam.” — Amber Helsel “George Washington, he got the U.S. together.” — Jim Hall 5 Our Spirit is Sky High This year, El Aho is being dedi- cated to all of those individuals who have brought spirit to Ramona High School. Coaches, teachers, students, and parents alike have all boosted our school morale. However, just what is school spirit? The students them- selves have expressed it the best. WHAT IS SCHOOL SPIRIT? “Getting strep throat after a game.” — Amber Helsel “When someone has the pride to show they care.” — Gary Curtis “The excitement that each school can produce to cheer their athletic teams on.” — Gus Whitcomb “How much enthusiasm a school has for its team.” — Carl Cox “DOGMEAT” Rod McDonald “I think we have more school spirit than bigger schools.” — Joe Kreinger “I don’t believe in ghosts.” — Kevin Owens “Sky High!” — Amber Helsel DOES SCHOOL SPIRIT HAVE ANY AFFECT ON YOU? IF SO, HOW? “Yes, it makes me prouder of my school.” — Rick Jones “Yes, it makes me feel proud to play sports.” — Robert Welch “Yes, it makes me want to go see the games even if we do lose, cause we’ve got a great team.” — Denise Perdew “Yes, I coach and my athletes perform better when their friends support them.” — Bill Tamburrino “Yes, I am proud of our school even though we do lose some.” — Steve Dietmeyer 6 7 Class of ’76 Points at Issue Unbelievable advancements have been made in the last two- hundred years. Engineering, the sciences and architecture have progressed rapidly. However, we have suffered a few side effects. Smog, pollution and over-popu- lation are among some of the by- products of progress. These con- troversial subjects, and others, are present in our community. Now let’s take a look at some of our students’ viewpoints. WHAT PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD UPSET YOU MOST? “Liars in government.” — Christy Kraus “That people don’t get along and we’re always threatened by war.” — Beth Bailey “Male Chauvinism, the conflicts of nations, and energy short- ages.” — Cindy Riffle DOES THE OVERCROWD- EDNESS OF OUR SCHOOL AFFECT YOU? HOW? “Having to play chicken for a parking place.” — Mary Ketchem “Yes, people aren’t as friendly, and I don’t know everyone like I used to.” — Denise Perdew “At snack time, it takes an hour to get a coke!” — Jim Hall “Yes, in the crowded locker rooms and not enough individ- ual help in some classes.” — Lisa Hughes IN WHAT WAYS DOES INFLATION AFFECT YOU? “I have to pay alot more for everything and it’s not worth it.” — Frank Glass “It doesn’t, I never have any money anyways.” — John Tanner “Have you ever tried to eat on your good looks when you’re homely?” — Bill Tamburrino is CHILDREN 4 EDUCATION BEFORE POLITICS VOTE WON NONSENSE VOTE NO ON SUNDER ME U ON RECALL II Faces of Friends Friends are an important part of everyone’s life. We all have dif- ferent ideas of what a friend is. Yet everyone’s idea parallels that of another to a certain extent. Some students shared their feelings with us. Here are some of their reactions to our questions. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINI- TION OF A FRIEND? “Someone who says nice things behind your back.” — Carl Cox “A person you can trust and rely on.” — Rick Bluhm “Someone who can kid around with me without getting mad. — Bob Dobson “Someone you can ditch with.” — Mike Nicoletti “Kool, always there and willing to help.” — Gawain Saunders “Friend: noun, a pal.” — Russ Moore “Someone who lends you a nickel when you need it.” — Wayne Wilcoxen “Someone who gives you a lift when you’re down.” - Cheryl Varnado WHAT FACIAL FEATURES EXPRESS A PERSON’S FEEL- INGS? “Their eyes. You can’t fake the look in them like you can a smile.” — Kay Gassaway “Their eyes and mouth, for this is where you see happiness (smile) and sadness (tears).” — Lisa Hughes “A real smile (not phony) and a sparkle in your eye.” — Ruth Ransom 12 0 14 Styles in America Fads indicate the times. Both are constantly changing. This year’s fads include turquoise, puka shells, T-shirts, earth shoes, midi skirts, and “Jaws.” They indicate a trend towards the natural things in life. People feel a need to express themselves through their clothes and jewelry. Many are basically conformists. The following may be some reasons of why fads exist: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE MOVIE “JAWS?” “Sound of Music with dentures.” — Carl Cox “It’s a pretty good movie only it costs you an arm and a leg to get in.” — Rick Bluhm DO YOU TEND TO FOLLOW CURRENT FADS? “I try to be myself most of the time, but I often find myself fol- lowing others.” — Henry Lowman “I don’t when it’s clothes and stuff like that, but I do when it’s habits and sayings.” — Leslie Greer WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER IN? “Doing your own thing, acting yourself, and not trying to be someone your aren’t.” — Henry Lowman “Nude Beaches.” — Ralph Sanchez “Health food.” — Kevin Sasser “Escargot (snails) and cham- pagne.” — Mr. Williams “Whatever you feel like wearing.” — Naomi Marck 15 That’s the W ay It Was in ’76 17 Seniors President — Brad Blanchard Vice-President — Cheryl Rice Treasurer — Karen Guernsey Secretary — Penny Shidner 20 Treasurer — Karen Guernsey Secretary — Kim Boughner 21 Senior Best Most Likely to Be Remembered: Cheryl Bartlett and Doug Wescott. The Bulldogs won two games and were never thought of lightly by their foes. The offense was explosive and the defense was stingy, and as always the Bulldogs hit hard and fought together as a team. The team was led by a group of hard-working seniors who set a good example for the underclassmen by their sacrifices and leadership. The groundwork they laid was the first step in returning Bulldog football to the championship caliber that Ramona fans can expect in the future. Football team finished with a 2-7 record but what is more important, it established a feeder program for the varsity. The team consisted of mostly sophomores and these young men will be asked to step up to the varsity team next year. They will fill in for the graduat- ing seniors. The team’s trademark was tough offense (the best in the league). Many of the J.V. are expected to start for the varsity next year. Ramona's player. Corky Carmichael, sacking Army-Navy's quarterback for a loss of 10 yards. The Beginning of Spirit at R.H.S FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Coach Cunningham, knowing that our young players need as much experience as possible, increased the freshman football schedule this year. He recruited four coaches to work with the freshman team so that the basics could be taught to each player. Anyone who wanted to play on the freshman football team was given a uniform. This year we had more players wanting to play than ever before. The team carried 42 players and everyone had a chance to play. The freshman coaches put their freshmen through the same condition- ing as the varsity players. “There is no question that our kids worked harder, had more spirit and desire than the other freshman teams that we played. We saw our players become athletes and grow into young adults, says Coach Carter. FRONT ROW: Jim Moshicr. Bob Dobson. Don Mark. Steve Dietmeyer. Scott McCurcheon. Rick Celeya. Mark Barrington. The Varsity basketball team with its new offense and defense was able to play competitive basketball with the best teams in the county. Coach Carter said, “This was the hardest working team that I’ve had the pleasure to coach. We were the youngest and most inexperienced team in our league, but we played the best team basketball. We also were considered one of the better defensive teams in the county. We had referees, athletic direc- tors and principals compliment- ing our team as being the best disciplined and sportsmanship team thay they had seen this year.” Varsity Basketball 140 Page 140, Group picture. Coachs Norm Boaz and Jim Steiger worked hard on basics, and helped the experi- enced wrestlers to develop more advanced technique, as they saw a compact but well disciplined team hold its own in the Coast League. Seven lettermen returned from last year and two talented fresh- men were broken in to do a fine job at the varsity level. The team won two of its first four matches, soundly beating San Diego and Julian, and losing by only three points to Fallbrook. There were solid performances from Jerry Darrough (175) who was rated fourth out of all wres- tlers at his weight, in San Diego County, Craig Misso (145) Most Dedicated Wrestler, Paul Salow (127) Most Inspirational Wres- tler, and Joe Meade (135) Most Improved Wrestler. Other con- sistant winners on the squad were Mike Celaya (154), Ricky Cotton (120), and promising freshman Ricky Celaya (130). The J.V. Wrestlers worked hard right along with the varsity, gaining invaluable experience and winning several individual matches. The nation is two hundred The people have the spirit The years ahead we shouldn't dread But remember the school spirit. By David Rice Bulldog Spirit Way up in the mountains of Ramona, there is a mighty school. Where lives the fighting BULLDOGS Who are mean and super cool We may not win the coast league but our spirit is the best if victories were won on spirit we’d be ahead of all the rest. Editor’s Note: The High School Library recently was given several old annuals dating back to around 1900. The books had differ- ent names then, but we still feel it’s fair to say this is the 76th Ramona High Yearbook. This is the first volume number given to a RHS annual. Also, the staff would like to express our appreciation to Craig Fischel of Craig Photography, who took the cover pic- ture, senior picture, and senior por- traits. 216
