You have to love life for it to be beautiful, You've got to take in every smile, every song, and every experience while you ca.n. Our theme has been that you have to reach out and touch the life that you are alive to. You have to be perceptive to every moment and learn all you can from it. You've got to take things as they come and live both the good and the bad, because they are both going to be there. Look back through the year and see what you have been a part of. What experiences have you seen, felt, and worked for? Have we really been living life in anticipation of all its beauty? We hope this book expresses some of the life, and maybe some of the lack of it, that we have experienced at Ramona High this past year. We've really got to get into life and love it, because every moment of apathy is the loss of something beautiful, , W ,tn Maia? Rodney B . Involvement in Student Government is an important ftuiction, which gives responsi- ble people the chance to serve their school and learn about the basic principles of democracy at the same time. Our ASB has been made up of a number of very unique individuals, perhaps more so than in any time in the last few years. New faces bring new ideas and there were many new ideas talked about and acted upon this last year. The first President of the school year was Vince Guglielmetti, who had also served the last Semester of school year 71-72. Vince combined common sense and a way with people to produce a very effective leader of the student government. The second President was David Ross, a student with different ideas and the' deep de- sire to make the ASB more responsive to Student Needs. Though a controversial figure, David was able to implement many of his plans including a new ASB Constitu- tion that was adopted in March 1973. During the last year an awareness has come to Ramona, an awareness that Student Government is something more than a popularity gameg and it shows in the actions of the officers and the Student Council. H. S. Miss Krogman, our advisor, has been very helpful to all of us: lending us a hand or some advise whenever needed. Ross, who has been with the newspaper for four years and editor for two, will be leaving us this year: but with the experience and knowledge gained this year, the staff hopes to return next year with bigger and better plans for our Dog Tales. .awww .Lil T F.B.L.A. By working together in different activities-preparing programs for football games, other money-making activities and preparing for workshops and conferencesg they hope to gain the experience, confidence and leadership necessary in our world today. A 2 I ADMINISTRATIO Students: Whether you become a laborer, a secretary, a teacher, a doctor, a salesman, or contribute to any other facet of your community, the point is plain, you need not have to be a genius to exercise that power. However, you must learn to work and function on the survival level as well as verbalize on the philosophical level, and you must dis- cover as an individual. To do good, we must first know good. To serve beauty, we must first know beauty. To speak truth, we must first know truth. And we must know these things forourselves, recognize them ourselves, and be able to describe, explain, and communicate them by our- selves when no one else is present to prompt us or bribe us. Such knowledge gives the individual a worthwhile purpose in life. As individuals we must hold true to that purpose and let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing. Goodbye and good luck to the graduating class of 1973. I hope you will find health and happiness in the days ahead. To the underclassmen, I urge each of you to make full utili- zation of your remaining years at our high school. It is with much pleasure that I express my thanks and ap preciation to the students and staff of Ramona High School for a most successful school year. Both groups have earn ed an enviable record of achievement and it is with your at titude and cooperation that the accomplishment became a reality. Challenges presented by today's society have been met but future challenges will indeed be different and most assuredly more complex. By your success in meeting today's challenges you are prepared to more adequately ac cept and meet those challenges imposed upon you in future years. While you cannot change what is past you can direct the future. Accept this as your goal and you will have con tinued success. I am honored to have been associated with you in your ef forts. It's not often that a team goes 4-5 and has a good chance to win a championship. However, that's the position that the Ramona Bulldogs found themselves in this season. After being manhandled by Chaparral League teams Imperial and Calexico, Ramona seemed to have the ex- perience to capture the Southern League crown which had eluded them for one year. The two big threats ap- peared to be Mt. Empire and Julian, who had lost their stars, Burrows and Ponchetti, respectively. The Bull- dogs squeezed by the Redskins and walked over the Eagles, and coupled with their triumph over Borrego in a desert monsoon, they wrapped up the Mountain Divi- sion. However, a league power Ramona had not counted up- on, Army-Navy emerged as a strong contender. In their first meeting, the injury-riddled Bulldgos discovered that ANA could not be taken lightly. It could not be said that Ramona was at a disadvantage when they locked head to head for the second time. A fired-up Warrior squad played practically error free ball and buried Ramona, 23-0. In spite of the 4-6 record, the Bulldogs had many bright spots. Sam Stockalper established himself as team leader on offense and he has a great following be- hind him. In all, the Bulldogs will have 17 returning players next year, including seven playing their third year of varsity ball. Ted Miller was the offensive spark as he had his finest www., ,,., ..,,,. . , ,Y-MN tm., A, Witty year, averaging over 100 yards per game and on a few occasions averaging better than 20 yards a carry. Ramona won't soon forget his dramatic 76-yard run mo- ments after being crowned Homecoming King. The de- fense was spearheaded by senior linebacker Rodd Turner a.nd his kid brothers Clayton and Scott. J Enough cannot be said about the prospects for next year. It's a yearly statement that next year's team will be better and this time you can believe it! .n R21 211.15372 lid.. 'Ya iff. This year's freshman football team was not quite like any other Ramona team in recent years. It was a team which lacked many things that a great team needs: size, speed, and experience. But, lacking these things, they possessed something many freshman teams don't have--guts. The 24- man squad averaged slightly more than 135 pounds and were no match for such teams as St. Augustine and University, who fielded teams of fifty players or more. A game did not arise, however, when our team felt they were mismatched. They played every game like they expected to win it. Even after lop-sided losses, they hung in there, never conceding that they were playing superior teams. And at the end of the season, they showed they could play with larger teams, defeating Escondido and Washington of Vista. standing defensive men. Offense was spelled HUNT as Bob Hunt was the leading ground gainer a.nd was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. When they were good they were very good, but when they were bad it was the same story, The team never really got into stride and on occasion were embarrassed from the start, referring to Elsinor's 31-3 first quarter lead early in the season, Ramona came back in that game, however, and lost by a respectable score, Eddie Anderson and John Dahl were the only players with J. V. experience and they helped lead the team on the floor. The scoring giant was Mark Miller, who stepped in and easily Won the scoring title, sometimes scoring half the team's points. But overall the team gained a lot of experience which many of them needed. In this reporter's opinion, the team was lost in the first couple of games and gradually molded into a fine squad, Rick Curtis The freshmen basketball team Was a pleasant surprise this year as Mr, Pat Walsh took a group of green players and developed them into a fine ball club, Often a team begins with a handful of boys who have had some experience, and they gradually get better as they grow together, But this year's crop was a bunch of guys who hadn't played together but wanted to play basketball, From the very start they showed they could play well together, Bill Freeman was the playmaker and was flanked on either side by George Garcia and Ralph Sanchez at guards. Randy Herrington was one forward and Kirt Witherow was the other, Witherow developed from a clumsy giant who just towered over everybody to a good inside shooter who still towered over everybody. All in all, the team had enough talent to prolong the legendary Ramona Dynasty for another four years. Rick Curtis FRESHME BA KETB LL Back Row - Left to Right: Coach Walsh, George Garcia, Bill Freeman, Bob Hunt, David Smith, Ralph Sanchez, and Doug Clinkscales. The first team consisted of five proven varsity ballplayers. If there was anything which darkened the Bulldogs hope of a championship, it was the con- stant flow of injuries, Often, only three reserves waited on the bench. However, the two players who stayed free of injury played key roles for the Bulldogs. Sam Stoekalper and Doug McIntosh stayed healthy to supply outside shooting and team leader- ship, respectively. The offense and de- fense revolved around Steve Conklin, who often got the second and third offensive re- bounds and released the quick outlet pass on the defensive boards. John Schneider was a mainstay at forward and was the most consistent scorer in league play. Hernan Cetina missed the first half of the season due to a finger operation, but came back to provide experience, outside shoot- ing and a third guard in the fastbreak. Juniors, Frank Corley and Manuel LaChappa should step into the shoes of Cetina and McIntosh next year and another fine season appears to be in store, The Bulldogs capped an 18 - 5 season with an 86 - 80 triumph over Clarence Clark and SDMA in Class A CIF finals. .ahh- :-' Qs M ' Y 5'5 -ng-t Above-Chris Depaola, lstplace. Juniors piled into one truck while the Seniors pack- ed another and proceeded to cruise the Main, cheering and shouting out their battle cries. It was soon to be known who was the best. It was a tough struggle between the rivals, Both teams did equally well in blocking, rushing, and hustling. When the dust had cleared, the Jtmiors emerged victoriously, defeating their elders, 14-0.
