At lunchtime a bar-b-que was planned, but the ominous thunderclouds discouraged many of the students who had planned on roasting hot dogs or hambur- gers. Soon enough 2:10 came rolling along and school was out. After working continuously for weelas on the floats, they were finally exhibited at the parade. Along with the floats, the lovely queen candidates rode on the cars that were generously donated by Taillac's Chevrolet. The Freshmen victory against Escondido aroused everyone's spirits for the remaining of Homecoming night. Although the J .V, was defeated by Oceanside, our Varsity came up with a thrilling victory of 37 to 18 leaving Borrego Springs deflated, ' At halftime, there were many happy Juniors when it was learned they had won the float competition. Also the crowd was anxiously awaiting the announcement of the queen. The drum roll began, And the 1971 Homecoming Queen and King are Babette Lawrence and Galen Darrough. As the band played the Alma Mater, the new queen and her court took their royal seats. Except for the cold weather, the parade and games were truly a suc- cess ending with a fantastic dance at the Multi-Purpose Room. Aww The Ramona Bulldogs, champions of the Southern Section Class A for the past two years, failed this year and ended the season with a disappointing 2-6 record. It was a very young team, with the Bulldogs having only 4 returning start- ers from the 1970 team, and lack of experience at the vital positions. The Bulldogs were trounced in the opener 45-8 by an experienced Marian squad, and showed improvement while they were being beat 18-0 and 15-0 by Imperial and Perris. But the big step came against Elsinore. The Bulldogs were 15 yards within paydirt three times, but failed to capitalize each time and were beaten 6-0, Then came the story book finish as Ramona topped Army-Navy on the last play of the game with no time remaining for their first win with the score ending 12-9. Then the Bulldogs hopes went down in a sea of fumbles and interceptions as they lost to Mountain Empire 14-6, and to Julian 22-9. Returning home, the Bulldogs posted their second and final win against Borrego, 37-18. The season was a disappointing one to the players and to the coaches who worked hard trying to produce a win- ning season, Even after taking CIF two years in a row, there was still en- thusiasm among the players for they knew they had played their hardest. Even in defeat, they were proud to be members of this Bulldog team. rf--.....m . 1st Row, L-R. Football team ended the season with a 3-5 record, losing only in non- league play, winning the league with a 2-0 rec- ord. Marian, Imperial, Perris, and Elsinore overpowered the Bulldogs with strong teams, in both offense and defense, leaving Ramona scoreless. Army-Navy was the first victory where Ramona ran right over the Warriors with a strong aerial attack. Leaving the field with the score 28-12 Ramona. The game at Mt. Empire was cold, but the Bulldogs were hot, pulling a victory, stunning their J . V. with a score of 30-20, Ramona's favor. One week later, the Julian Eagles just oouldn't get off the ground with Ramona rol- ling right by with a 15-9 victory, winning the Class A Junior varsity Championship. With Borrego lacking a team, a game was set with Oceanside High Reserves. A hard hitting game was witnessed by the Homecoming crowd, but the Bulldogs could not quite push by the Re- serves. With much excitement and some dis- appointment the game ended with a score of 12-14 in favor of the Oceanside Reserves. The team members voted Mike Darrough as team captain with Angel Yanez receiving Most Valuable Player. 4-.4 in , ,,,, BACK ROW: John Robinson, Bob Ballantyne, Mark Miller, Albert Knowles, Tom Hallman, Kim Brett, Eddie Anderson, Scott Stone, Danny McGowan. BU LLDOGS TAKE CIF The Ramona Bulldogs rolled to an impressive 17-8 record and took the CIF Southern Section Class A title for the third year in a row under the direction of new coach Jan Page. The Bulldogs boasted one of the shortest, youngest teams that have ever taken the court, with a bevy of talent coming from last year's J. V. Squad. The Bulldogs were slow in starting this year, but picked up as they won their third Southern League Tournament, rolled over powerful Calipat, 66-61, and swept through the league with a 9-0 record. The highlight of the year was the CIF Championship game with Coastal Division Champs Christian. The game was a fast moving affair, being a hard battle all the way. The Bulldogs broke the heralded Christian press to pieces with effective passing and running. Outstanding and clutch performances were turned in by Senior All-League Center Fred Conklin, who ripped down 15 rebounds and added 11 points and John Schneider, sophomore forward, who put in 27 big points for a career high and winning the title of Most Valuable Player. Christian tied it at 63-all with two minutes remaining and the game was up for grabs, but the Bulldogs shot effectively from the charity stripe and broke the press for a big 71-66 victory in the last minute of the game. Next year's squad should be a real powerhouse in which some of our younger talent should begin the basis for a more spectacular squad. 3522+213 , ,,,, 3' I! X5 Q I! KWH, 'JE' W -sq... With only four returning Varsity players and a new coach the Bulldogs had to undergo the trials and tribulations of growing pains. The Bulldogs started out slow by dropping a scrimmage game to El Capitan 14 to 1, but bounced back to show that they still have the punch to maintain their domination of the Southern League by blanking S.D. M. A. 10 to 0. The Bulldogs opened their season with a close, well played, 3 to 0 loss to San Marcos. Following the San Marcos game the Bulldogs took on Fallbrook which was no contest, as Ramona went down in defeat. At Perris the Bulldogs got their season rolling with a 4 to 2 win, and from then on played outstanding baseball. Galen Darrough, Bruce Delong, Hernan Cetina, and Manuel Marin continually supplied the needed punch in the Bulldogs hitting attack. First year players who contributed outstandingly to the Bulldog season were Brian Blomberg, Ted Miller, Nicky Crouch, San Stockalper, and Jose Abarca. Many emotions have come and gone since the first freshman class of the new Ramona High School entered in the year of Nineteen Hundred Sixty Eight. Now that we are past history, who will re- member us ? Our class is not noted for its size, its athletic excellence, or any of the other factors that to most people signifies a successful graduating class. Each of us knows what he has done for Ramona, and what Ramona has done for him. It has given us headaches, bruises, disgust, and tears. But, ironically, these tears are not of sorrow but of joy. Emotions like these will always be remembered in mind and heart as long as we live. Four years ago, Ramona High School re- ceived a group of young people, who have emerged, equipped with four short years of education. These years spent at Ramona High School must prepare us for many years of endeavor--college, finding meaningful work, or raising a family. But now that we are gone, we look back ..... to our friends, joys, and sorrows, our vic- tories and defeats, and all the rest that make up high school memories and remember how much we loved RAMONA HIGH SCHOOL. w 'l3 , fax E ESE I 2 ll if ll 2 ll?
