illiam Hanigan The job of the teacher is to get your students to learn to do something better than you yourself can. We want to dedicate this El Ano to a true educator. A true educator is willing to understand his students, take them into his hands and educate them. An educator feels that there is more to life than what can be found in books . For this reason Mr. William Hanigan was chosen. He was an educator at Ramona for thirty-four years, doing many things and teaching many subjects. He taught every- thing from Biology to Driver Education, fand incidently First Aid.J No matter what task was put before him, he not only put his vast knowledge to use, but also his ability of caring deeply for his students . This ability is now rarely found. It consists of understanding his students and dealing directly with each student as an individual. To be able to do this is important that you draw closer to the students . To have this close contact with the students he served as A,S,B, advisor and found it one of the most enjoyable times of his life. He feels that faith and self-initiative play a large part in education, To build this initiative it takes faith--faith in yourself, and faith on the part of the teacher and the parent. Kids always put things off, but it is through faith that they always get it done. Because education is less formal than it was several years ago, he believes students have a better chance to develop their own potential by faith in themselves and using their own initiative. A quality he likes very much in students is that they can accept responsibility when it is given to them. It takes al- most a catastrophy for adults to realize that kids can take responsibility. A good example of this was during the tragic Poway fire of 1967. Mr . Hanigan always dreamed of seeing Ramona High School students have a library where they could work to the best of their ability. During the time that he served as librarian, they set up the first card catalog Ramona High School ever had, and the students of Ramona are now enjoying one of the finest libraries on the county, He would like to see students have a chance to get on-the-job training and more vocational classes which would enable them to go directly into a job. Students , he feels , can get these things done, if they will only channel their power in the right direction, 4
