We want to dedicate this El Ano to a true educator. A true educator is willing to understand his students, take them into his hands and educate them. An educator feels that there is more to life than what can be found in books . For this reason Mr. William Hanigan was chosen. He was an educator at Ramona for thirty-four years, doing many things and teaching many subjects. He taught every- thing from Biology to Driver Education, fand incidently First Aid.J No matter what task was put before him, he not only put his vast knowledge to use, but also his ability of caring deeply for his students . This ability is now rarely found. It consists of understanding his students and dealing directly with each student as an individual. To be able to do this is important that you draw closer to the students . To have this close contact with the students he served as A,S,B, advisor and found it one of the most enjoyable times of his life. He feels that faith and self-initiative play a large part in education, To build this initiative it takes faith--faith in yourself, and faith on the part of the teacher and the parent. Kids always put things off, but it is through faith that they always get it done. Because education is less formal than it was several years ago, he believes students have a better chance to develop their own potential by faith in themselves and using their own initiative. A quality he likes very much in students is that they can accept responsibility when it is given to them. It takes al- most a catastrophy for adults to realize that kids can take responsibility. A good example of this was during the tragic Poway fire of 1967. Mr . Hanigan always dreamed of seeing Ramona High School students have a library where they could work to the best of their ability. During the time that he served as librarian, they set up the first card catalog Ramona High School ever had, and the students of Ramona are now enjoying one of the finest libraries on the county, He would like to see students have a chance to get on-the-job training and more vocational classes which would enable them to go directly into a job. Students , he feels , can get these things done, if they will only channel their power in the right direction, 4 ADMINISTRATION Superintendent George A. Childress Mr. George A. Childress has for three years now been the administrative leader of our school district, Mr, Childress came to Ramona from Oregon, where he had been Superintendent for ten years. Before working in Oregon, he spent seven years at the Winters School District as Superin- tendent and three years as Assistant Superintendent and Super- intendent at Pismo Beach. This industrious man started his teaching career in 1937 in Oklahoma, He holds a Bachelors and a Masters Degree, along with General Elementary and Secondary Teaching Credentials, ...ww and a Elementary and Secondary Administrative Credentials, Ramona is indeed very lucky to have such a vigorous Work- er as Mr, Childress to head their affiars. ink.. f i w School Board This year's School Board was headed by President Robert DeLong, Among their many duties is to appropriate money for our school district, hiring teachers and other help, and making out our rules and regulations. These are the hard working indi- viduals who brought about the realization of our dream, Left to right: Tom Froiland, Student Rep. g Herbert Walters, Rudi Stockalper, Ruth Swycaffer, William Purdew, and Robert DeLong. Principal Z 1 5 5 I , ,, , .M .,,, , ,,vv, W Myron H. Bill: Keeper of the Dream A Message from Mr, Bill The rewards of excellence do not come easily. It requires rigorous discipline to achieve them. The 1970's will easily be years that challenge the intelligence and judgment of our people. Inflation, rising prices, the War in Asia, the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, unemployment, and use of drugs are some of the most disturbing problems We must face in the 1970's. Unemployment is probably the most serious domestic problem that faces the nation. Many students on our high school campus today will be associated with the following: Last Hired - First Fired. These will be the uneducated and unsldlled. Because of a poor educational back- ground, they are the ones Who cannot compete in a tight labor market. The lack of education is a tragedy for the individual. But society also pays the price of failure, for it is the school drop-out who is most likely to be on Welfare or in a jail cell, This nation cannot afford so large a number of its young people to become so disadvantaged. I urge every student on our high school campus to seriously consider what the future has in store for him. Not only stay in school, but learn While in school. To the senior class of 1971 you will soon find out that the educated move forward. I Wish each of you the best of health and happiness and hope that your days on this campus have in some small Way laid the pillar for your educational and vocational future, Sincerely, Myron H. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Heed our parting call. Shine thy light on all our honor, never let us fall. Ever faithful true and loyal, loving the Grand Old R looking back to fond old memories, sad, but PROUD We are! Dream Within a Dream It all began in the fall of 1967 when the little Freshmen entered Ramona High School. Being naive, we didn't know too much about our strange surroundings, but we were quick to learn when initiated by the adorable upper-classmen. As Sophomores, we found the new high school very dif- ferent and exciting. Our eager, youthful minds were alert and ready to meet the new challenges. Our Junior year brought a lot of excitement as we WOI'ked hard on the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was The Lost City of Atlantis, and everyone enjoyed themselves im- mensely. A rough game of Powder Puff was played and the Juniors lost a very close game. Our big year came all too soon. Because of our creative ingenuity we can now boast of winning the float for four years in a row. The Seniors won the Powder Puff in a vic- torious game against the Juniors with a score of 38-6. As the Class of 1971, we look back on our four years at RHS with fond memoriesg we gaze into the future wondering what it holds for each individual, and hope for peace for all mankind. P 1 ACTIVITIES Freshmen Initiation X NS' X It all started early on the morning of October 16. The freshman boys were very easy to spot for the day as they all had to wear their pants on inside out, and the girls had to come with no make-up. Throughout the day a variety of initiation pranks were being pulled, but the best of all was during noon. The sophomores sure got their revenge from last year. First off was the pie eating contest, the BEAN pie eating contest. Ex- citing it was, especially for winner Nicki Crouch. And how thrilled he must have been to walk up and receive his prize. . .a can of beans I Next was the egg contest, in which the two teams had to pass an egg down the line using only their necks. As the time passed and a few eggs fell broken, team 4352 roared on to victory. Such events as shaving the garlic-filled balloons and eating watermelon topped with whipped cream ended the noon festivities. As the freshmen walked away from the amphitheatre, I'm sure they began to think of how they could get revenge next year. Donkey Football Game Faculty vs. Boosters 'Tuesday, November 10, of Homecoming week the Seniors sponsored the first Donkey Football game to be seen in Ramona, and probably the last. It started out with an exciting jousting tournament which was won by Mr. Mc Micken. And then the thrill-packed show moved on to Donkey on the Spot. The Winner of this game was Bob Kelly who played for the Boosters club Qpart of the time anyway! lj Finally came the terrific U1 football game. Up, up, and away for her first Ready for the Homecoming dance. flying lesson. omen's Lib 38-6 The night of November 12, 1970 began very quietly. It was a clear evening, untroubled by fog or even heavy winds. But this, sports fans, was no ordinary night. There would be a football game. Again, nothing ordinary. This time, not a run-of-the mill boys' football game. Not a run-of-the-mill girls' football game either. It was, of course, the an- nual powder-puff contest between the Junior and Senior girls. In this limited space, it would be almost impossible to describe all the memorable moments. Still, a few stand out. Among the most thrilling, was Land 'em Lawrences terrific touchdown. She intercepted a pass from her own team f?J, then ran for the touchdown. Unfortunately, she ran the wrong way. You guessed it, she was a star Junior. Another Junior, Musher Mona, made her team's only touchdown. As could be expected, the Seniors played some great football. Standouts here in- cluded Haulin' A Renee ffaster than a speeding bulletj, Minute Reiss fmore powerful than a locomotivej, Super Sue fable to leap tall build- ings at a single boundj, not to mention lay 'em out Lynn who made a touchdown on a punt return. But look, up in the sky, is it a bird? Is it a plane ? No, it was the Junior cheerleading staff along with their trusty hoses. Sadly, the Senior squad only had balloons. Water balloons, of course. As the game ended, the Juniors won their water fight, and a few spec- tators had their spirits Qnot to mention their headsj dampened. But in the final analysis, the Mighty Seniors came out the victors. The game played against Mountain Empire was great, ending with a victory for Ramona, 40-0. Halftime ac- tivities were started off by Bobbi Jo Flammang twrilling her fire baton, and doing a fantastic job at it. Next the band and drill team marched onto the field and showed everyone a fine performance, and the crowd sure let them know what a great job they did. As the field cleared, around came the Princesses and Princes and then the King and Queen candidates on their cars. Peggy Donahue, Homecoming Queen '69, was on the field to award the King and Queen of '70, Homecoming '70 was twice as exciting, because for the first time we had a King and his court. The tension really built up, as they announced the King and Queen, and then the applause started rolling in. Everyone seemed very happy, especially Randy and Nellie. Sadie Hawkins is a time for fun---and fun it was! The night of January 16 will stand out in the minds of a lot of people for many years to come. This was the night the F. H. A. sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. For many girls it was the chance to catch their 'dream guy for at leasty night. There was a good turn out and everyone was in the spirit. It took some talking, but we got the band, Just Us , to play some rockin' out, square dance music.. Then it all began. There was about 15 couples standing in the middle of the floor doing the old P. E. special, Virginia Reel. The band could hardly believe it, but what do they expect? When you come this far out in the country you can't just bring out City music ---we have to hear a little of our own country style, hick music to be happy. The dance floor wasn't the only area of excitement, the hitchin' booth didn't do to badly in stirring up the emotions either. About 11:00 the dance started dying out and as the clock struck mid- night, the excitement ended. As we hit Disneyland, the kids Went in all directions and were unseen by most everyone until 7 p. m. when the buses pulled away. Class A basketball title. Ramona took the lead in the first period and led throughout the entire game. At the start of the game the Bulldogs were somewhat disorganized, but they quickly warmed for their win. The Falcons led only once in the game, 10-8, during the first quarterg but Ramona quickly went into the lead on a three point play by Ed Nelson. For the remainder of the evening the Bulldogs led with ease. Early in the game it became evident that Bulldog center, Dale Eberwein was to dominate the court. Eberwein scored 24 points and pulled in 17 rebounds. Another high-scorer for the night was Ed Nelson, bringing in 14 points and collecting 18 rebounds. In the final tally, the Bulldogs hauled in 52 rebounds to 29 for the Falcons with Nelson and Eberwein bringing in 35 re- bounds between them. Ramona connected 28 of 77 shots from the field while the Falcons only hit 22 out of 71 shots from the field. The championship was the second straight Class A title for Ramona. According to Mr. Bill, it was Mr. Vacys Standish, and Mr . Arturo Ramierez who actually did the coaching. Mr, Bill is extremely grateful for the assistance both of these men gave to help start soccer in Romona. Mr. Standish is a former team member of the Hungarian National Soccer Team and Mr , Ramierez played professional soccer . This year is considered to be a good year for the first year soccer team and much time and effort was put into it to make it successful. Both the coaches and the team members gave their best ef- forts throughout the season, Almost every night during the season the team practiced under the lights on the football field. When the games were completed at the end of the season, the Most Valuable Player was Andy Garcia, team captain was Issac Garcia. Mr . Bill and the entire soccer team are looking forward to next year when they will be able to play in a regular league, playing 14 to 15 games in a season. Mr. Bill states that he is happy to see soccer get started in Ramona, and it is the opinion, that most everyone else is too, D- 4 in . This outlook comes in the form of renewed spirit, and desire to do the best possible, for the team and the indi- vidual as well. An example of this strong desire to develope the nec- essary running abilities occurred early in the season, when a few of the team jogged to Poway High School. They traveled 13 miles, covering the distance in one hour and 38 minutes. As a result of daily workouts records were broken early in the season. Matt Hayes set a new record forthe one mile with a time of 4:50.3. The previous record had been set by Bob Darrough in 1954. Jerry Heath also set a new record for the two mile that was earlier held by a San Marcos runner six years ago. The new two mile re- cord of 10:45.23 was only a week old when Matt Hayes broke the record with a new time of 10:42.3. This was Hayes' first attempt to run the two mile in a track meet. These records were set early in the season and by the time the track year is over they will probably be replaced by faster times. For many years Ramona has had a tennis team, but not much is ever said for these boys. The team has been fairly successful these few seasons, despite the small turnout for the sport. This year 14 boys have gone out for tennis and many are underclassmen who will be able to return in the following years, better trained and more skilled in their sport This year the team will have eleven contests in which to exhibit their abilities. The 1971 team boasts three individ- uals who are considered outstanding on the court. They are Brian and Terry Harris and Vince Chinell. All three are returning lettermen in this sport. Brian Harris in position to serve. Vince Chinell in champion form. BA EBALL' 1 The 1971 baseball season began for the Bulldogs at Poway High School where they played their first non-league game of the year. The Workout against another ball club ended in a 4-2 defeat. But considering Poway High is a much bigger school then Ramona, the Bulldogs did very well. The Varsity and J , V. learned in their first few weeks of play both their strong point and weaknesses. Larry Walker was a key player for the Varsity. His fine abilities both as a catcher and a batter were appreciated by the team many times. The varsity Bulldogs when at bat were fortunate to have batters such as Mike Callahan and Mike Severtson. In the field the team relied on the abilities of the Bulldog pitchers, who allowed few hits. Throughout the season the J , V, players worked out a rotation system Where freshman players could learn to play their positions from returning players. This year's J . V. team boosts many fine players, but two lettermen were out- standing in their efforts. They were Tom Laws and Ted Miller, both will pro- bably advance to the Varsity next year as a result of their skill. Mrs. Wilson fLanceyJ performed all the miracles like a dream. It is true that we here at Ramona High can never repay all her warm words of friendship and needed counseling, but it is also true that we will never forget her. She was a secretary, yet she was more than that, she was our first annual advisor of the school year of 1970-71. Lancey took this staff and guided them in the right direc- tion during the summer and first few weeks of school. For this We truly thank you, and hope your dreams come true. Qlncidently, on January lst, 1971, Lancey had a dream of a little boy, which the Wilsons named Tyler Lance. Burritos, Tuna K1 cookies, too, Qin: ,Hmm is For many years Ramona did not have a high school. Students who graduated from grammar school were obligated to go else- where if they wished to continue their education. Finally the situation became so inconvenient that the leaders of the community decided to establish a high school in the rooms above the Town Hall. Some of the men who first conceived the idea of the dream of higher education for Ramona's young people were. . . Issac Green, Levi Zimmerman, Thomas Jerman, Elmer Maydole, Frank Creelman and John Clevenger. On the first day of October in 1894, Neuvo Union High School opened with 24 students enrolled. There were no organized sports and the boys played One Old N Town Hall fpainted by Mrs. Oscar Pikej Cat in the dirt of the main street. The girls had a Croquet court. These were the sports for the new high school. lt wasn't until 1917 that we had organized sports. That was the year that John Prof Wilson came to Ramona. The students struggled along in the cramped rooms until they were moved into a new brick building in 1911. In 1921 Ramona had a championship basketball team, beating schools like San Diego High and National City. In 1923 the colors were changed from orange and blue to the famous royal blue and white. In 1934 a building program began that would bring them an en- tirely new school plant. This was done almost entirely from Class of 1896 P,W,A, funds and partly by a local school bond. The building was completed and dedicated in the fall-of 1936. The new gym- nasium-auditorium was sufficiently completed to allow the class of 1935 to be the first that graduated from WilsonGym. The building continued with the construction of a cafeteria annex and two large classrooms. All plans for further devel- opment were indefinitely postponed by World War II. Over two hundred boys entered the service and nine paid the su- preme sacrifice. A plaque in their honor was installed in the main corridor of the high school by Mrs. Evelyn Tellam, a teacher at Ramona for over 20 years. The first permanent home of Ramona High School. By the end of the fifties, the faculty and students dreamed of a new high school. One where they could expand their minds to the fullest and where all the needed facilities could be available to meet the ever-increasing amount of students. The realization of the dream seemed a long way off, but when Mr. William Donahue, then the Ramona School Superintendent, began to look over plans and make a tentative layout for the new high school, the dream began to take shape. In the summer of 1967 construction began on the new Ramona High School. The location on Hanson Lane and San Vincente Roads gave Ramona's record enrollment of students a lot of room to grow. In September of 1968, the students entered the new high school in grand style. An open house and dedication ceremony was held at which time a capsule was filled with a 1969 El Ano and a copy of the school newspaper, Dog Tales. It was placed behind the plaque on the out- side wa-ll of the library. Seventy-seven years have passed since the first high school in Ramona opened and the enrollment has increased from 24 in 1894 to 450 in 1971. 1 The graduating class of 1971 boasts a total number of 102. This class also conveys the fact that during the time they were at Ramona High School they have also won C, I, F, in football and basket- ball two years in a row. Even more important than that they have attended a new high school and have had a chance to learn. In View of that, it seems as though. . .
