We have traveled on this river of life to what end we could not foresee. Along our journey our lives have gathered in the turn of seasons as the routine of education wore away the edges of hours, and the pebbles of thought cast by our teachers paved the course we followed. In their hearts God plants the seeds of faith and love which grow into pillars of greatness. Their spirits are aflame with devotion, their hearts are overflow- ing with compassion. These associates of the Trinity are saintsf laymen, children, scholars and Popes. One such man was john XXIII, man among men, leader of the Christian world, humble servant of God. His character was one formed by gentleness and fatherly love. Ruling the Church from a pastoral throne of patience and forgiveness, he attracted the far-flung peoples of the world with a serene smile and a kind word. Manifesting his innate courage, he launched an Ecumenical Council, which has been like a first spring breeze, quickening with life the Church's renewal and its task of reuniting the numerous faiths of men, so long separated. Truly Pope john was a man who loved his faith, his fellow man, but above all his God. So it is with a mixture of joy for his final triumph and of sorrow for our loss, that we, children of a common father, dedi- cate this 1964 Copa to the eternal spirit of our Pope of happy memory, john XXIII. 5
