Mr. Roller for the last two years has striven to raise the standards of the sehool and lift the level of high school work nearer the eollege ideal. In his department, at least. he has done this, and in so doing has engendered i11 his pupils deep respect and unbounded adniiration. buena: apartment lllfl eourses offered in this departinent are: General Seienee for the first year, taught hy Mrs. Hoot, lliology, for the seeond year, taught by Mrs. YW-llsg Vheniistry for the third year, and Physies for the fourth year, taught hy A. lf. Holler, who is also head of the departnient. 'l'he Seienee llepartnient, while not the largest in the High School, has grown in the last t'ew years front a few pupils until now there are 3111 pupils enrolled in the Seienee elasses. 'l'he department is now as well equipped as are the Seieuee departments in the hest high sehools in the State. liast year the school eoluluittee made very generous appropriations for this departnient, about 331.500, for the purehase ot' apparatus and furniture. The department is equipped with eoinpound mieroseopes for individual work in Biology elasses, and individual lahoratory work is done in all the seienees exeept General Seienee, where ainple material is at hand for demonstration work. The reeitation room for Physics and f'llK'llllSll V is fitted with a stereoptieon, and the best furniture and other apparatus ohtainalmle. She has, with the help of Mrs. Schooley, made this de- partment one of the most popular and profitable courses offered. umestin Scienre apartment HE Home Economies Department includes courses i11 all the various phases of home-making: cooking, sewing, millinery, and interior decora- tion. Heine project work, which gives the student an opportunity to put theory into practice in her home, has been introduced as part of the course. The classes meet two periods daily. The Domestic Science classes maintain a cafeteria, where tempting dishes, prepared by the girls, are consumed by the High School pupils. f'The courses aim 11ot to make a girl proud of herself but to make others proud of herf' Millinery has been a very popular course this spring term, aml the pupils have completed very attractive hats. Instruction is given ill frame-making, covering, and trimming. Sewing is offered to the girls that they might learn the fundamentals of dressmaking. They learn to sew not o11ly for themselves, but for other mem- bers of the family. VVith each problem tl1e student studies design. color, and finish. Also a course in Interior Decoration is offered, in which the home is com- pletely furnished. Thirteen
