Cason, AB. Mr. flason, through his willingness to sacrifice, his constant friendship and ready cooperation in all the activities of our high school life, has done niuch to make this, our last year at R. H. S., thc niost successful and enjoyable of all. 1 nglish apartment AM seriously doubtful if the study of English has yet been given its propor- tional consideration in our schools. lve have beeoine accustomed to its being said that English is our niost iinportant study. Yet, we do not lind one high school in ten that has as adequate equipinent for the English ltepartnient asiit has for certain other departments. lt is yet true that soine of our leading colleges require three and four units of Latin for certain courses, while they allow only three units for English. And we tind, at least in niany of our high schools, an atmosphere of inditterenee towards English, and an attitude of ques- tioning its importance. One of the two purposes of education, nainely, better to enable one to enjoy life, is more dependent. upon the knowledge and the use of good English than it is upon that of any other branch of learning. The ability to speak good English, and conversance with English classical literature goes far towards giving one admittance into the niost cultured circles of society. lt is also true that a knowl- edge and the use of good English is a big factor in deterinining one's success in practical atlairs. The department in the R. H. S. aspires to a fuller aeconiplishinent of an ideal course for its students, and the positive graduate requircnicnt that a student shall be able to speak and Write reasonably good English. Mr. Roller for the last two years has striven to raise the standards of the sehool and lift the level of high school work nearer the eollege ideal. Twelve THE RATTLER NINETEEN TWENTY-ONE Mus. J. S. KIXSBEIEGIER, BS. The great increase of interest and results in the Domestic Science Depart- ment speaks for Mrs. Kasbcrgeifs popu- larity and ability. She has, with the help of Mrs. Schooley, made this de- partment one of the most popular and profitable courses offered. umestin Scienre apartment HE Home Economies Department includes courses i11 all the various phases of home-making: cooking, sewing, millinery, and interior decora- tion. Heine project work, which gives the student an opportunity to put theory into practice in her home, has been introduced as part of the course. The classes meet two periods daily. The Domestic Science classes maintain a cafeteria, where tempting dishes, prepared by the girls, are consumed by the High School pupils. f'The courses aim 11ot to make a girl proud of herself but to make others proud of herf' Millinery has been a very popular course this spring term, aml the pupils have completed very attractive hats. The literary societies organize aml again our class show up well. There are more Sophomores i11 the Morson l.iterary Society than there are members of any other class. The foothall team starts on its march of victory with more players from the Vlass of '23 than from any other. .Xml our boys make the most brilliant plays aml are stars in every game. Then, too, we all go to the games aml show our pep aml our power to yell. Fair week comes and gives us a little rest from lessons aml such, which, we most heartily believe, we deserve. lVe grow sorry for the Freshmen aml give them a party and treat them nice, therehy abandoning our old policy of Htreat 'em rough. Vile give them Hall mlay suckers, pop-corn aml punch, amuse them aml let them stay up until eleven o'elock, a very late hour for small ehihlren. NOVEMBER Our team continues to win all the games aml to make our opponents feel like two cents. 'llhanksgiving comes aml we greet it with joy, for we feel that going to school too long without a holitlay is not good for us. I 7 -: rfb ll Hl The thrills of those first days in the Raleigh High School! Xve were the infants to most of the school, but classed ourselves as Freslnnen.l' Everything new! Vile wandered aimlessly about the halls in search of HMiss VViley's English Class or for Miss lioot's Science Class. The 'tSophomores, as we respectfully called them, tried to awe us with their superiorityg but we will say this for them-they did give us a party. And what a delightful one it wasl On Halloween night many spooks, witches and goblins appeared at the school to dance and frolic till nearly midnight. In order to be as grown-up as possible we elected oliieers for eaeh section. Some of our elders tprincipally the Sophsj think it impossible that we shall ever ugrow up , but we know better. The oflicers have served us well, never once failing to do their duties. Vile have them to thank for our delightful programs and entertainments, given as opening exercises each morning. Several short plays were presented, debates given, and many other such entertainments. -The Freshman Class is very proud of all its members, but especially those who have made some great success. You may be sure that among those wl1o shine most brightly in the eyes of their fellow students are Lucy Scott and Sue,' Mowery. All who have seen them play realize the H. H. S. would not have had much of a basketball team without Lucy and t'Sue as forwards. Mr. Holmes, Miss Mosser, Miss Pool, Miss Smith, Miss Vlliley, Miss Harden, Mrs. Mitchener and all the others of our dear teachers are responsible for our promotion, our remarkable promotion to ftSophomores. Next year we shall return, having achieved at least part of our aim. Wle shall be the 'flilderly Sophomores, looking down upon another crowd of Freshmen-''infantsv to us then. Each year as we become lirst c'Sophs, then Qluniors, and finally Seniors, we shall look back upon this wonderful year, when we were L'Freshies, just learn- ing to love our dear old R. H. S. Miss RI'SSI'ZLI, Another enjoyable social event took place early in January when the Morson Society entertained the liewis at a delightful party. A pleasing program was presented by nienibers the society, one feature being' a clever impersonation of the Lewis Society by the Morson girls. The society has been well represented in every phase of sehool work. Two of our nieinbers, Maude Stinson and C'atharine Vox, entered in the preliniinary debating contest. ,Xltho they did not nialce the tirst teani, they were each chosen as alternates. lVhen the Dl11'l121111-Lillil1'l0itC debate was held here, the Morson and liewis Societies turned out in full force to weleonie thenig and, innnediately after the debate, a reception was given to the visitors. The credit for the success of the society this year goes not only to the officers, but to each and every nieniber who has labored uneeasingly to the achievement of the Standard, ''Good-Better-Best in the Morson Literary Society.
