They had many lettermen returning and were defending League Co- Champions. After a very encouraging turnout and some good workouts, came the traditional Black and White. Some outstanding play brought out the excitement in everyone. They started well and were rated in state. But the rest of the season proved to be a series of ups and downs. The most important thing was accomplished though as players learned good sportsmanship and had fun. Mr. Bigham feels that most of the seniors will continue into the college level and represent Rainier very well. Top row: K. Cochran, Sramek, Johnston, DeVries. Allen, Hadlock. Junior Varsity comes of age This year's J.V. team improved over the season tremendously in many facets of the game. They played a tough schedule against our league rivals and earned a share of first place in the league. Mr. Woodmark and Mr. Head proved to be a fantastic coaching tandem. Mr. Thorson and Mr. Ward also helped out greatly even though they received no money or considerations. Mr. Bigham, T. Sanford, J. deVries await referee signal. 8 Frosh Determined The key to the Freshman successful season was a balanced offense and a stingy defense. Their schedule included J.V. teams and they still managed a 4-3 season record. The highlight of the season was a double overtime victory over Scappoose. P. Peerboom looks downfield for a receiver. They attended the N.C.A. clinic at Lewis Clark College; they worked very hard winning superior and excellent ribbons for 4 days. From the day they arrived they learned many yells, routines, chants, and stunts. The girls returned home ready to start the new season off with lots of SPIRIT!! 10 M Bogardus, smiles all the way! 1 f • ■ A f % , I 1 !t i ‘ V iV Missie, Cheryl, and Cindy raise their spirit to the sky. The season started with an Early Season Invitational Meet at the Trojan Nuclear Site. With 15 teams, Rainier placed in the middle of the pack. The varsity team was always changing with new faces appearing every week. It finally settled down to Tom Ray, Tony Rea, Ken Triplett, John Muck, Glen Thomas, Bob Thomas, and Rex Thomas. The J.V.'s were led by three juniors; Terry Samples, Jim Muck, and Yale Smith. Joy Fleming anchored down the girls team for the second straight year. The Varsity team finished third in the district meet while the J.V.'s finished first. Joy Fleming finished ninth in the girls race. The outlook for next year is very promising. Special awards presented at the Sports banquet were as follows: Most Dedicated Female Most Dedicated Male Most Valuable Male Most Improved Male Team Captains - Joy Fleming - Tony Rea - Ken Triplett - Rex Thomas - Tony Rea, - Ken Triplett Coach ‘Jay Bird' Davies gives a pre-race talk to his team. Tony Rea feels the pain near the end of a long race. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL For the third consecutive year the Varsity Volleyball team went to state. This year at state they placed second. They brought home a trophy, with experience for a very young team. They won the Cowapa League very handily, only losing one league game. Their final record was 13-3. The Varsity team this year will only lose two players. Which still should make them very tough next year, again. (Left) K Marston blocks. (Above) V. Counts sets. They not only were outstanding in their performances as a team, but they also showed a lot of quality, and hard work. They lost only one game all season to St. Marys, in which they played a very good game. This team should make a lot of contributions to the Varsity team next year. J.V. The basketball team started the season with a great deal of expectation. They had talent and confidence along over-all ability that made many expect an outstanding season. They started the season against a number of AAA schools. Against superior teams from the bigger schools, Rainier lost its first five games. Immediately team morale went down the drain. Which eventually led to three important reserves quitting the team. Next year with many players returning, we can hope for an outstanding season. D. This Freshman Team came to the season with everyone expecting them to do very well. The people who thought this had every right to. They had won a league title in 8th grade and had shown all the ingredients of a winning team. Coach Burnett believes in the idea that everyone should play and that nothing is more important than fundamentals. Under this philosophy they had a decided disadvantage as the other teams went with their 5 or 6 best players all game. Mr. Burnett played all his players, regardless of the impact it had on winning or losing the game. Even under this disadvantage, they showed that everyone could play and that you could win. This they did as they compiled an excellent 16-2 record. Sorry buddy, smiles B. Gregory P. Peerboom concentrates. R. Thomas fakes and then dishes off to C. Corl. On floor: Doug Guisinger J.V.’s, Soph’s have assorted troubles This year the most important thing was to gain experience, which was accomplished through an infraction in a rule that the coaches didn't understand fully. This rule is that one player should not play more than 22 games in one season. Though many players were disqualified, they had already played in about 30 games a piece before they learned the true meaning of the rule. This means most of our players got almost a third of a season more experience than other players their age around the state. Ask any coach and they'll tell you how important experience is. J. They had a league record of 5-5, with an overall record of 12-8. During the season they played a game against Vernonia, where they won 101-11. VHRSITY RRLLY LERDS EVERYONE The varsity rally did a very gooo job of showing leadership. The J.V. and Freshman rally gained a lot of experience. The girls attended a cheerleading clinic last summer, where there were nearly a hundred other squads at this clinic. They won five ribbons, two of which were superior. They were also honored with the spirit stick award for having the most spirited squad. Laura Bonner was chosen as the Columbian mascot. The mascot was something new this year, and became a tradition through the years. Ray gives the team a clap. I'll open wide for you,” says K. Schmuck. The Cheerleaders perform Honor Rainier.” Man, this is boring,” thinks J. Coldwell. M Bogardus leads the crowd with a cheer. 38 J.V. Rally Helps Out The Jay Vee rally played a big part in the pep assemblies, and helping the other girls at the games. Although they had some trouble with attendance, they always pulled through and did a good job. The girls are good hopefuls for next year's varsity. Laura Bonner was also the Rainier Columbian mascot. I'll dance for you, smiles Sue Thorpe. 40 Hi, I'm Laura,'' says Laura Bonner Frosh Rally Does Good Job First Time “They call this exciting? wonders Frosh Rally. “Pucker up, thinks R. Hansen. “You don't know how tired I get, thinks D. Holmes. The Freshmen Cheerleaders did an excellent job keeping the basketball team fired up. It is hard for Freshmen to get out and do things for the first time, but these girls did a fine job and they deserve a lot of recognition. The Frosh team had a season record of 16 wins, and only 2 losses, which would not have been as easy without the help of the Cheerleaders. “Al-rite big team, yells A. Cramer. “Go get 'em!' 41 “Me, clap??? asks B. Meadows. Wrestlers Major Power in State This year's wrestling team completed one of Oregon's toughest AA schedules, and finished on top. Their only losses came from teams that finished in the top ten at the state tournament. With fifteen wins, four losses, and one tie, the Rainier wrestlers finished second in league. At the district tournament, Dan Caballero, Tom Kelley, Mark Elbert, and Roy Bonser qualified for the state tournament. Dan placed third and Mark became the seventh stage champion from Rainier in its wrestling history. With two matches, enough points were scored for Rainier to place eighth at the state tournament. Special honors were won by Mark Elbert and Dan Caballero at the state tournament with a first and third place finish, respectively. At the state freestyle tournament, Caballero placed first and Elbert was fourth. Dan was honored as the most outstanding freestyle wrestler this year at a statewide banquet in Albany. Caballero was chosen for two different Oregon all-star teams and was joined by Mark on one of them. Way to go, Rainier! Coach Jacobson having ref. trouble. But as always, they were both successful, having a large turnout and plenty of good food. Even though the basketball team did not have a good year, the crowd was very appreciative of their hard work and good effort throughout the season. The wrestling team on the other hand, had a good year, finishing it by sending four people to state. The Rainier Basketball team as a whole. Athletic Director, Wes Bigham, calls his next victim. Hood C.C. Although the teams were divided into two different squads, everyone competed and acted as a whole. The team had its ups and downs, but if it were not for the coaches, the teams would not have stayed together. There are going to be a lot of seniors leaving, but the remaining members will make up for the loss very well. I would like to say good luck to the 1978 Rainier Track Team. L. Rainier baseball club went to state for the first time in 25 years. We've had a lot of talent in the past, but this season we put it together and worked as a team. Mr. Doumit came up with several morale building projects. Like other major sports, baseball players had guardian angels; a newsletter, the Baseball Banter, came out weekly; and posters like, Baseball Brotherhood and Columbians of the Week to get the rest of the school excited. This new track will make it possible for Rainier to finally have a home meet. Mrs. Pam Davies also noted the youth of the girls track team and said that they should improve greatly in the future. The Baseball team was especially praised by Mr. Pete Doumit for their third place finish in state. He made special mention of their good attitude and poise. They had a great season. Held at the Fairgrounds Pavilion in St. Helens, it was a big success. Dancing to the music of Brothers and Friends, couples enjoyed the theme of Never Let Her Go and decorations including a tiered fountain in the center of the floor, a mirror ball, and four silver tinsel chandeliers. Streamers of burgundy, pink, and white surrounded the dance floor. Joyce Robinson decorated cakes with the theme and colors for refreshments. Marla Dawkins, serving as prom chairperson, was ably assisted by many juniors who worked every evening for a week to make it a success. The class presented an engraved plaque with four glasses made by Tom Ray to Shirley Jensen and Sharon White, advisors, for their hard work and dedication. Almost $1600 was earned during football season for the prom. The prom cost about $1200, a third of which went for the band. The Pavilion was given free of charge by the Fair Board. There were many students this year that proved to be a great asset to the discussions of the council meetings. Student Council really proved itself to be a good organization; they made many good decisions concerning the future school. Also, Student Council had a candy sale to help raise money for the sign board at the new school. Students at the student council meeting have many things to discuss. 68 All of the student council members come together for a picture. The Girls' League had a blast throughout the 1976-77 school year. Jenny Coldwell served as president, and did a tremendous job. To start out the school year, a Big and Little sister party was held to introduce the frosh to the Girls' League. A formal Christmas Ball, Val-o- grams, a two day beach party, Halloween party and pixi sisters were some of the other activities done by the girls. The annual Girls' League Convention was held in Glide, Oregon. Over twenty girls attended. Rainier received two awards, the farthest traveled and the best roll call response. Swing Choir's goals this year are to have high quality tone, clear pitch, and blending voices. Swing Choir chose a variety of song styles, from pop to light rock, and some lazy jazz. A few of the Swing Choir's selections are as follows: Tuxedo Junction , I Only Have Eyes For You , Life is a Song Worth Singing , Alone and Blue , Bright Eyes , and the senior class song, Mahogany . Chris Thorsen and John Stein were added to the Science Department. Jay Davies came to teach math and physical education. As a faculty, they welcomed the new staff at the fall Girls' League Luncheon. Some of the men participated in a basketball team suffering injuries from a poked eyelid to a sprained ankle to being knocked out. May, found teachers involved in a Gong Show to provide money for a student scholarship. All who attended as well as participants had a good time. Rainier High's faculty shows a great deal of diversity in almost every field of study, but unity in wanting the best education for the communities students. Mr. Peerboom poses for the camera.
