EMERAUDE 1972 Rainier High School Rainier, Oregon Volume 49 For one distant moment we stumble across the barrier existing between strangers. We tripped and found each other; and now we are friends; So, when leaves cascade from the still trees and tickle my cheek, I shall remember not a time, but a friendship. For too soon We shall go separate with our ways, With sadness? I think not! The best of everything is not ours but a taste is enough! And I shall keep my heart a little happier; my eyes a little brighter; and my soul elated. Because I had a friend to share, At least part of my life. CURRICULUM BECOMES ELECTIVE Two new teachers were added to the faculty; Dan Carter who taught Math, and Lyman Salisbury who taught Industrial Arts. The history department started their elective pro- gram which they patterned after Eagle Point High School in Eagle Point, Oregon. The Science department also offered electives such as astronomy, zoology, and botony. The English department added nine-week classes to their already elective program. With these changes, the curriculum is closer to its goal of being completely elective. Mr. Henry Anderson Mr. Fred Bell Choir, Counselor Band, Bus. Law, Photo. Over the years Mr. Bell has done an outstanding job and has taken his band to many places such as stagehand competitions, Jass Festivals, and even to England, Ireland, Holland, and France. Probably classed as the upset of the year, the Columbians beat the highly ranked Tillamook Cheese- makers 6-0. The season was ended when the victory wagon coasted down hill to Seaside, where the Seagulls beat Rainier 34-0. This gave Rainier and Seaside the co- championship of the Cowapa league with Seaside taking the state berth. Both teams ended the season with four wins and one loss in league play. Besides yelling at all the football and basketball games they had other responsibilities. They coated the halls with signs they painted, organized pep rallies, and had a car wash to earn money for their uniforms. During the summer they went to a cheerleading clinic at Lewis and Clark college to leam new yells and routines. Ribbons were awarded for girls who did outstanding jobs and our cheerleaders brought home five. This Varsity Cheerleader had the Close-up smile! 52 Sports Junior Varsity Cheerleaders: (Clockwise) C. The second game was a real barn-burner. The Juniors and Sophomores battled it out the first half of play with the Juniors leading 17-15. With five minutes left to go in the game the Juniors came out of a huddle with only four players. Behind by 6 points and with two players fouled out of the game, they caught up and tied the score 30-30. The Sophomores squeaked past the Juniors in overtime with a 33- 32 victory. Playoffs the following night saw the J uniors romp over the Seniors 46-19. The sophomores beat the Fresh- men 40-16 taking the championship. 70 Coach B. Haebe, L. Dexter, J. Pritchard, L. Werth, T. They competed in many meets, and had more hustle and determination than some of the larger teams. 73 VOLLEYBALL PROVES CHALLENGING The girls volleyball team was a young team this year with seven freshmen. With no seniors on the team there will be a lot of experience carried over for next year. The girls lost many games but claimed a victory over a highly rated Seaside team. She was an active member of the Boot and Spur Saddle Club in Clatskanie and the West Winds 4-H Club. She passed away on May sixth, 1972 after being involved in an automobile accident. Julie's warm and friendly smile will be remembered by all who knew her. Even though she has left us she will remain in our thoughts forever. The freshmen this year were well initiated into high school by being made to do push-ups by the upper class- men. The first few days the school seemed like a maze with freshmen wandering around trying to find their classes, but as weeks went by they rapidly became regular troopers. If this year was to be any indication of class unity the freshmen have great cohesiveness. With the seniors the freshmen won the canned food competition held during the Thanksgiving season. The collected food was distributed to the needy families in the community. C. Johnstun: How about Saturday night?
