Also a special thanks to Miss S. White who helped us in the end. If a man does not keep pace with 3 his companions. perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. CITIES IN CRISIS . t Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away- Henry David Thoreau 6 Administration Wendell Curry, hard working su- perintendent, spent many long hours this year working on the unification of the five school districts for next year. This is the last Emeraude for the Union High School District 3. Through his efforts and those of Mrs. Zimmerman, whom we were unable to get a picture of, the district ran smoothly and made beginnings in many new programs in curriculum. 7 Mr. Peerboom: keep it down. 8 Cooks Custodians Lee Williams: never a dull moment We were very fortunate to have Louise Cowan, Betty Brown, and Zelma Doty as our cooks. Mrs. Doty also was in charge of the laundrying of towels and sports uniforms. On our custodian staff was Reuban Oilila, Lee Williams and Joyce Robinson. These people worked hard to prepare our lunch and to repair our school. Joyce Robinson 9 Home Economics Mrs. Chase: I hope they don't eat that stuff. Home Economics was taught by Mrs. Chase. The students learned cooking, sewing and a course in foreign cookery. The students learned how to prepare the different foods. They enjoyed making them as well as eating them. The boys learned some practical knowledge in the new cook and sew class. They learned the basic things of cooking and sewing, including making aprons. Agriculture The AG. class was taught by Mr. Dirickson. The students learned how they could help our agriculture in the years to come. They also learned the fundamentals of surveying. Mr. Dirickson and students 10 English What did you say?????? All four letter words aren't bad. Let me write that down. Duh-uh-uh-uh The English Department has become quite diversi- fied this year. Reading classes were taught by Mr. Wheat with many new machines and a Language Master. These enabled students to increase their reading speed and comprehension. Some of the other new classes taught this year were Job Hunt, Science Fiction, Short Story, Mythology and Folklore, Creative Writing, Advanced Composition, Drama, and Advanced Grammar. Students are looking forward to next year when even more new classes will be offered. Mrs. Foey taught Frosh Lit., Sci. Fic., Mythology, and Mass Media. Tammy and Steve doing extra curricular work for Mass Media. 12 Business Class Mrs. Sophusson: Now really girls! Mrs. Sophusson taught Spanish, Typing I II and Office Machines. The Spanish students prepared a dinner for themselves consisting of many Spanish foods. All enjoyed preparing and eating the dinner. The Spanish students took a trip to Portland with the Art classes to see the famous Picasso paintings. In her Office Machines classes she taught students how to operate adding machines and about correct office procedures. With these classes the students gained knowledge of how an office is run. Typing I is required before a student can take office machines. Business, Typing and Spanish Classes 14 Social Studies Mr. Roth trying to teach U.S. History to three talking girls. The history classes took on some new discussion topics. The American Problems classes discusses such things as black problems, cities, income tax, drugs, and budgeting. These topics brought more interest to the students and gave them useful infor- mation as they go out into the world. Mr. Burnett: I think that's enough to keep them busy. 15 Mr. Mike Beyer discussing an historical event in World History. Mr. John Crocker leading a discussion with Connie Patching, Becky Wasser, Mike Howell, Melinda Ellis, and David Chase in International Relations class. 16 Math Miss Jensen checking a problem for her geometry students. Mr. Mason takes time from his business math class to pose for picture. The mathematics teachers were Mr. Muck who taught Algebra I and II, Calculus, trigo- nometry and analysis. Miss Jensen who taught Geometry and General Math. Mr. Mason who taught Business Math and General Math. The higher forms of math, Trigonometry, Analysis and Calculus were designed for the students who are planning to go to college or major in the field of math. Mr. Muck working out a problem for his students. General Math students working hard on a difficult problem. Mr. Humphrey and class experimenting with helium The general science classes taught by Mr. Humphrey, Miss Jensen, and Mr. Mason went on field trips to various plants such as Reynolds Aluminum and Crown Zellerbach at Wauna. The students got to see industry in action and learn how it helps us. They also experimented with gases such as helium to see its effects on the lungs. Giving a science report can prove to be a tense situation. Mr, Mason, Business Math instructor Mrs. McDaniels taught biology Library Mr. Clore, our friendly li- brarian, enjoyed his first year in the library after teaching English here four years. Paperbacks were introduced as over the counter material and many new volumes were added to our collection. Mr. Clore finding a word for Patty 20 Photography Art Photography This was Mr. Bell's first year teaching photography and along with building a new lab, he introduced many innovative techniques. Art We caught Mr. Grey who teaches art, while his pupils were going bananas. Auto Mechanics Mr. Perry has his stu- dents dismantle a car and become proficient at repairs. Metals Shop In metals shop, many learned the art of weld- ing and made some worthwhile projects. 22 Choir The choir was directed by Hank Anderson. The choir throughout the year attended various festivals such as the Cowapea All League Choir held at Vemonia. They also went to local schools such as, Delena, Apiary, Rainier and other elementary schools to perform. At their annual spring concert, Patty Robinson was awarded a $75 scholarship. Ken Jarret was awarded the most valuable senior choir members trophy; Ken was also president and Duane Guisinger was vice- president. The choir was honored with the presence of Charles King after an inspiring assembly by himself. The psychology class taught by Mr. Hank Anderson, was known throughout the school as something else. This was because of the seemingly strange things they sometimes did. One of these things was suggestive hypno- sis, another was the hot seat, in which a person sits in the middle of the room where everyone can see them and anybody can ask them any question they want and they have to answer truthfully. The Psych class also took field trips to the Longview Progress Center to observe mentally retarded and handi- capped children. They also visited the city j ail where they were shown the cells. As usual Mr. Anderson is telling Mona S. and Julie W., and Becky W. and also Debbie R. to be quiet. Terry Karnoski taking a breather during a softball game. 23 This year the girls learned the art of self defense. This is something new and proved to be very useful against the R.U.H.S. boys. The girls also learned the basic skills of archery and the many skills of tumbling. Keep it up girls. You might grow up to be another Raquel Welch! He was also voted Rainier's Man of the Year by the Rainier Jaycees. Student Council 26 John Lowe, Vice President, and Dennis Wellington, President, make a final decision. Student Council, advised by Mr. Crocker, originated many new projects this year. They sponsored a number of good assemblies in- cluding Charles King, Kirby Brumfield, and Sand Cross. They also donated money to the Emeraude, sent cheerleaders to clinic, sent cheerleaders to state, and made plans to re- vise the constitution. 27 Honor Society This year, 16 new members were tapped into Honor Society. They underwent an all day initiation, during which they wore all their clothes backwards and had their faces painted up. Also, they couldn't talk to anyone except teachers, or else had to pay one cent per word. Honor Society members took tickets and sold concessions at home basketball games. FRONT: D. Pourtalas, P. This was their only defeat throughout the season. The team only tied one with Castle Rock, another non-league game. The Columbian's most important game came with Nehakanie. This would decide who would go to state. The Pirates made a good show, but the block-busting Columbians came through with the winning score. The students backed the Columbian team through- out the season with spirit and pride. The most exciting moment of the season was district play offs at Wilamina. The senior class of 1971 started off the year like any other year, but the focus was on the end, when they would graduate. They went on their senior sneak to Coffinberry Lake on May 18. It was a cloudy day, with a drizzle of rain, but everyone had fun. They played football, baseball, went swimming, and threw Mr. Wallace and Mr. Anderson both into the lake. The senior class donated the remainder of their class treasury to the Puckett family to be given to their favorite charity in honor of their son Arrol. Although they have now left the halls of R.U.H.S. , they will always remember the good times, and they will always be remembered by underclassmen for years to come as the class of 71. And they say that he's a Senior! Curt Curry in thought. 63 Arrol Puckett Arrol Puckett was born on March 12, 1953 in Redmond, Oregon. He attended grade school in Junction City, Delake, Warren, and Skyline before coming to Rainier in the sixth grade. He finished out grade school and went on into high school here in Rainier until his junior year. He then transferred to Stayton. He was back at Rainier at the beginning of his senior year. He had many friends and was active in our school's sports. Everyone in Rainier was saddened when, on December 28, 1970, Arrol was killed in an auto mishap. They proved this by winning the spirit stick at the assemblies. They also proved it by bringing the most canned food for the Christmas baskets. The food col- lected was given to the needy, so they could have a brighter Christmas. This showed the frosh's great interest in other people. The freshman skit added to die spirit of Columbian Capers with bewitching en- chantment. They brought about a cloud of smoke and a witch stiring a brew of spirit in a black pot. We hope they will keep this spirit for the next three years of high school. The frosh advisors, Mr. Coder and Mr. Burnett, helped with their activities. The frosh football team did well for their first year. They will be a welcome addition to the varsity and junior varsity team in the coming years. Sec. -treas. Sue Evans; Pres. Their biology classes took a field trip to Sauvie's Island to a wild game manage- ment. They learned how wild geese and other birds were tagged. Their skit in Columbian Capers was about the star player of the football team, Gorilla George. George is injured and someone else has to take his place. The new player saves the game, but turns out to be a girl. A Sadie Hawkins dance was put on by the sophomore class. Steve Baily was chosen as King frog. The sophomore's also sold class rings. The sophomore class advisors were Mrs. McDaniels and Mr. Muck. Treas. Penny Strohm; Sec. Susie Chase; Vice pres. Sue Ann Hardesty; Pres. Steve Pellham. They took in over eight hundred dollars for their treasury by selling refreshments at home football games. The money went for the Junior-Senior Prom and next year's activities, such as the Senior Sneak. All this was made possible by the spirit, and willingness of the class to participate and help when needed. The junior class won the Columbian Capers skit wtih a variety show directed by Capt. Brad. The Homecoming Queen was also a junior. Nancy Mattinen, who ruled over the activities. The Homecoming dance was put on by the junior class also. Much must be credited to Mrs. Norma Chase, Mrs. Pat Farrar, and Mr. Gray, who gave their time unselfishly to help the class in their many activities. We were very fortunate to have them as our class advisors.
