EMERAUDE ’68 RAINIER UNION HIGH SCHOOL RAINIER, OREGON VOLUME 45 OUR CREST The band across the center represents the Columbia River; The torch represents knowledge and the academic values at Rainier Union High School; The winged foot represents our athletic teams of basketball, wrestling, track, football, and baseball; The ship is emblematic of the one in which Captain Robert Gray sailed when he discovered the Columbia River; The trees represent the lumber industry, the chief livelihood at Rainier; The mountains symbolize Mt. Rainier from which our town's name was derived. Take a weatherstained and modern com- plex of buildings. . . Take a faculty of twenty-seven dedicated and admired teach- ers. . . Take a capable and responsible ad- ministration. . . Take a student body of friendly, energetic, and interested students... Take a look at old Rainier Union High School. . . Aren’t these the same? The old traditions may remain and new ones may be born with each passing day. . . Students may come and students may go. . . but all these will add to and enrich the memories carried with Rainier Union graduates throughout their lives. It is the sincere wish of the entire annual staff that this 1967-68 Emeraude may serve as a treasurehouse of irreplacable remem- brances in the years to come. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION PP. 8 - 13 CLASSES PP. 46 - 62 SENIORS PP. 18 - 44 SPORTS PP. 64-86 ORGANIZATIONS PP. 88-102 ACTIVITIES PP. 104-114 CANDIDS PP. 11 6- 129 ADVERTISEMENTS PP. 136-144 IN MEMORIAM KEITH HARKLEROAD Keith Harkleroad was a transfer from Parkrose, in Portland, Oregon. He came to Rainier his sophomore year and immediately made many friends. He was very active in all athletics. Keith was the kind of guy everyone wanted to be like. The girls' admiration for Keith was as strong as the boys' respect. He was killed in an auto accident August before his junior year. This came as a heavy blow to all. Even though Keith may be departed his memory will always live on in the hearts of his friends. IN MEMORIAM MICHAEL KOSKELA MichaelCarl Koskelawasa boy who will long be remembered by his fellow students and friends. He had gone to Rainier Union High School two years previous to his death. Michael was a quiet, polite, and in- dependent boy. He was also a brilliant student with excellent academic accomplish- ments. He was an Honor Society member with an outstanding record. Although Mike is no longer with us, his classmates will always remember the young man with the outstanding grades and friendly smile. 7 SUPERINTENDENT MR. WENDELL CURRY In the fall of 1956 Mr. Curry came to Rainier to teach. He taught the seventh grade for seven months then was promoted. After five years of being the principal he was made superintendent. Firm, fair, and positive Wendell Curry guides the destiny of Rainier students. Men of few words are the best men. Shakespeare. 8 Assistant Debbie Ward Secretary Mary Ellen Zimmerman PRINCIPAL MR. STANLEY PEERBOOM Mr. Peerboom, our principal is a man of distinction. He realizes that in each new student entering Rainier Union High School there is a great resourse of undeveloped potential. Through his wisdom and unceasing dedi- cation many individuals have found the satisfaction they have been seeking. 9 Secretary Amy Busick Assistant Julie Mason Dear Students: The 1968 edition of the Rainier Union High School Hmeraude reminds us that another school year has passed. Trite comment at the end of a school year always seems to include the notation that the year was a good year. However, I feel that this is the case and I feel that this must be said of the past school year. I do not mean to imply that the year was not without shortcomings and problems, but I do feel that strides in educational progress were made. Objectives sought at the beginning of the school year were reached, particularly in school curriculum and changes in school plant. Plans have been and are being formulated to make further changes which we hope will be an improvement for the school. All individuals associated with the school are asked to be patient at a time when patience has not been in evidence as much as it once was. I am certain that the time is not too far off when we will be able to see that the school is meeting the needs of the students in a superior way rather than in what might be termed a good or average manner. I want to thank the students and staff of the high school for a very fine effort over the year. I want to wish all of you a gainful future. GJ. We, the Class of '68 hold many things in our book of memories, for we have spent four years at RUHS. Each year holds memories of special deeds and enjoyments. Our freshman year was topped mainly by the fact that we were now in high school, and although we were frightened at the beginning, soon we became accustomed to the life of a high school student. Next was our sophomore year which was highlighted by the Biology field trip to Short Sands. This was supposed to be study, but we all had a lot of fun. Then we were juniors who had the responsibility of putting on a Prom, which we did quite well. And finally came our senior year when the sneak, graduation and the senior party were a few of the fondest memories of this year. And even though it's over in reality, we will always remain a class held together by the things we did together. Terry Allen Transferred from Blackfoot, Idaho 3, Choir 4, FHA 4.
