Many of these events were sobering ones--Russia and the U. S. resumed nuclear tests, segregation remained a problem in the south, and so on--but let's remember the brighter side of that year. .. . It was the year that Astronaut John Glenn orbitted the earth three times, and became a national hero. The Twist was the dance rage across the land. Everyone seemed to be twisting with Joey Dee or Chubby Checkers, and they had the broken kneecaps and fractured sacroiliacs to prove it. It was the year of the Jacqueline Kennedy look. The girls were ratting their hair, and wearing Liz blouses. The wonderful Seattle World's Fair began in April featuring its breath-taking Space Needle. The big movie of the year was Westside Story , written by the popular Leonard Bernstein. Sophia Loren and Maximillian Schell won the Acadeir Awards for the Best acting. It was in the fall of '61 that Yankee Roger Maris hit his sixty first homer, and broke the great Babe Ruth's old record. New records were set in Pole Vaulting; one by John Uelses with a 16 ft. 3 4 in. vault and one by Dave Tork using a fiberglass pole, of 16 ft. 2 in. Arnold Palmer won the Master's Golf Tournament for the 3rd time in his career. It was during this year that the first lady of our land rode an elephant in India, and the Shah and Empress of Iran came to visit our country. Everyone was reading Exodus , and the Pulitzer prize winner, To Kill A Mockingbird . The favorite songs this year included Moon River , Michael , Big John , and Midnight in Moscow . The TV favorites included two new medical dramas, Ben Casey , and Dr. Kildaire , which were popular to the extent that Ben Casey blouses appeared on the market. Yo-Yo's became the craze among the youngsters and teen-agers alike this year. Yes, it was a zany, wonderful year...... HOMECOM ING The 1960 Homecoming Queen, Rosemary Young, crowns the new queen. The queen is presented a bouquet of roses by Lettermen President, Bill Womack. The 1961 Homecoming featured an impressive coronation assembly presented by the lettermen on the afternoon of November 3. During the program Queen Louise I was crowned. The lovely queen and her court reigned over the football game with Vemonia and at the dance that followed. The Senior Class sponsored the dance and decorated the gym in a bright autumn atmosphere. The theme was effectively carried out through the use of mushrooms, mossy rock gardens, little animals, a fairy-tale stream and fountain, and a lovely lily-shaped throne. Tliis unique throne was the setting for the cor- onation when Kathy Titland and Jim Murphy were crowned by the 1961 King and Queen, Steve White and Carol Witham. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1962 Basketball Team, under the coaching of Mr. Peerboom, was very much improved over last year's squad. Rainier had a very young team this year, with only five upperclassmen on the squad. But despite their lack of experience, the Columbians showed good promise and looked very good in some of their games, part- icularly those with their old rivals, Clatskanie, against whom they won both games. WRESTLING SQUAD The Rainier Wrestling Squad, under the coaching of Mr. Wallace, had a good season, losing only a small percentage of their matches. The Columbians took 3rd place in both the League and District meets, and sent four men to the State Tournament. Of these four—Tippy Tipton, Steve White, Rollin Schimmel, and John Curtis—Rollin emerged the A-2 157 lb. state champion while Tippy placed 6th in the 106 lb. division. Mr. Wallace, coaching in his first year at R.U.H.S., is to be commended for his fine job. We expect to see more good wrestling teams come out of Rainier under his direction in the future. BASEBALL 1962 The Rainier Columbians had a poor baseball season this year, winning only one game. This poor showing was due mainly to the team's bad hitting. Although the Columbians generally had good pitching and fielding, their hitting was seldom up to par. Rainier had a comparatively young team this year, with a number of underclassmen on the squad, and hopes that they will improve future Rainier baseball teams. COLUMBIAN TRACK The high point of the track season at Rainier High came when the Columbians won the Sub-district meet, nosing out Hood River by some 7 points. The following week Rainier placed third in the District meet and qualified Jim Gaston and Leon Schmidt for the State Meet. Jim and Leon subsequently placed 5th in the pole vault and 6th in the high hurdles respectively. FROSH TRACK.
