We Salute John Baker and Fred Bell For the enthusiasm and direction-the patience and time that Mr. Baker and Mr. Bell have spent in behalf of the students; for the joint effort they have made in the production of the excellent musicals; and for being the good people they are, we dedicate the 1961 Lmeraude with graditude and affection. 2 Contents Dedication 2 - 3 Theme 5 - 8 Administration 9 - 10 Faculty 11 - 14 Classes 15 - 42 Activities 43 - 70 Sports 71 - 88 Advertising 89 - 105 Annual Staff 106 _ 108 The Daily Record Students assume responsibility through student directed activities I A Student’s Life Is Varied for Completeness I wish to congratulate the members of the class of 1961 as they graduate from their first 12 years of school. A good many members of this class are outstanding as scholars and fine young men and women who will follow their separate paths with varying degrees of success through what is becoming an increasingly complex world. I feel that all will benefit greatly from their four years at Rainier Union High School, where they, have learn- ed, in addition to the usual subject matter, obedience, tolerance, self discipline and co-operation. It is with great joy, yet a bit of reluctance we, the underclassmen, teachers, admin- istrators, school board, parents, and friends bid farewell to this fine group of young men and women. We wish them unlimited success and happ- iness in all future endeavors. 9 A high school secretary must be efficient, friendly, and well-liked. Doris Flippin, R.U.H. S. secretary for eighteen and a half years, has all of these com- bined qualities. These and many more make Mrs. Flippin the kind of secretary any school would be proud to call its own. Secretary These nine hard-working girls not only do many odd jobs around the office but also do various typ- ing jobs for Mr. Greene and some of the teachers. They deserve a great deal of credit for all the work they have done. Office Girls Front Row: Rosemary Janvrin, Shirley Sparks, and Kathy Wittwer, Second Row: Joyce Welke, Iyn Chase, Kay Deal, Charlotte Klein, Bonnie Nicholas, and Dottie Forsyth. Hang those Fish-Heads! These were just a few of the cries heard at the bonfire on the night before the Homecoming game with arch rival Clatskanie. A Clatskanie player was burned in effigy in the bonfire; the rally squad led the crowd in several yells; the coach gave a pep talk; and the crowd piled into cars for the annual serpentine through Clats- kanie. Friday night following the game, the senior class held the Homecoming Dance in the gym decorated with fall flowers and greenery and football favors. Rosemary Young, the junior princess, was crowned queen during intermission. The 1961 Junior Prom was held on April 29 at the Rainier Union High School from 9 to mid- night. The gym was hardly recognizable; it was disguised in a French manner following the “April in Paris theme. A giant Eiffel Tower in the center of the dance floor added to the at- mosphere as did the many, many flowers and the sidewalk cafe. The couples danced to the music of the Glenn Miller Orchestra while anxiously awaiting the crowning. Finally the moment came! In front of a large map of France composed completely of flowers, Queen Carol Witliam and King Steve White were crowned. The orchestra swayed into the theme song and the king and queen led off the royal dance. 67 KING BILL RYAN PRINCESS CHARLOTTE KLEIN PRINCE CURRY SLAYMAKER HELLO YOUNG PRINCESS LINDA THAYER PRINCE LEO WALDROP LOVERS! However, when Rainier played their best games, their opponents seemed to play their best also, and thus the Columbians were unable to break into the win column. THE BENCH COLUMBIANS RAINIER VS.
