RAINIER UNION HIGH SCHOOL RAINIER, OREGON VOLUME 34 Long after the dust settles behind the heels of tracksters like Bowers, Cooney, and Pfaffle, after the echoes of Nys' smashing tackles fade away on the gridiron, after the basket- ball backboards recover from the onslaught of Euhus and Lance, students of Rainier will remember the man who helped make these students and others into both athletes and gentlemen-----Coach Eldon Kellar. But he will be remembered not only as a coach but also as a teacher and an assistant to the administrator. To him this year fell the difficult task of reducing the absenteeism in the high school, a job tailor-made for a one-eyed monstor, almost certain to bring a nomination for the meanest man in town. He did the job, yet through it all remained a nice guy. To Coach Kellar, with gratitude, we dedicate this yearbook. 2 ( merciu V ASS'T. EDITOR GARY FORREST EDITOR JANICE BUSH BUSINESS MANAGER DAWN DILLEY ASS'T. BUSINESS MANAGER JUNE LEDFORD ADVISOR MRS. CLAUSEN We, the Annual Staff of 1957, present the 34th edition of the Emeraude, endeavoring, whole-heartedly, to portray by the pictorial and written con- tent, the many phases and incidents of the life of a high school student. We hope you will enjoy the following pages and consider these as a most valued treasure of the wonderful days at Rainier High. We would like to express our appreciation to those who have helped put out this year's annual. 3 ZJaLic of Contenti ADMINISTRATION 5-12 CLASSES 13-32 ORGANIZATIONS 33-42 ACTIVITIES 43-50 ATHLETICS 51-68 SNAPSHOTS 69-72 ADVERTISING 73-78 4 5 JPrincipa To our principal, Paul E. Schiller, we wish to express our thanks and gratitude for the encouragement and help of the various problems that have come up during the four years we have been together. Mr. Schiller is now serv- ing his seventh year at Rainier High. Secretary To Mrs. Doris Flippin,Secretary, we would also like to express our thanks and gratitude for all she has done for us. During the thirteen years she has been at Rainier High, Mrs. Flip- pin has made many friends with the students and faculty. 6 EVERETT SKEANS, CHAIRMAN CECIL URIE A school is more than a classroom, an efficient heating plant, and a curriculum of organized study. It is a democratic organization working for the advancement of the whole community and requires expert guidance and a friendly council. The members of our school board have contributed greatly to the success we have enjoy- ed during the past year. The students of Rainier High School greatly appreciate the work that the school board members have done, the opportunities they have given us, and the time they have spent in making this year valuable to us. Those directing the policies of the school system this year were Donald Nys, James Lowe, John Mooney, Cecil Urie, Joe Walker and Everett Skeans. 7 ROBERT BELIEU Chorus Band Art Mech. Drawing Soph. Members of the Student Council represent every organization and class (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) in Rainier Union High School. New organizations were added to the council this year. The Student Council suggested to the juniors and seniors to have a com- bined junior-senior play instead of separate plays. Both the junior and senior class agreed upon the suggestion. The play was given in the spring. The sponsoring of a foreign exchange student was brought before the council. There was much discussion as to how money would be earned to bring the student to Rainier. There was also the question of whom the student would live with when he or she arrived in Rainier. The decision to sponsor one was unanimous. The election of officers was held in the spring when the new officers took over the duties of the former officers. 11 Every period of the day Mrs. Flippin has someone to help her in the office.
