RAINIER UNION HIGH SCHOOL RAINIER, OREGON VOLUME 33 1 At Sanger, Oregon, a long time ago, Was born a man whom we all know. He soon went to school, as most boys do, And in high school became a football hero too. June, 1917, Bill received a degree In Agricultural Science from O.S.C. Then our country entered World War I So he joined the Marines and shouldered a gun. A civilian again, he taught schools far and near; Then in 1944 Bill decided to try Rainier. As his twelve years here have been rolling by, Farmer” Bill has worked hard for Rainier High. The Ag. department has doubled in size, And in guiding the F.F. A. he has proved to be most wise. Honorary degree of State Farmer has been given to ten boys And the title of Keystone Chapter the whole club enjoys. To each one comes a time when honor is due, Now, Mr. Cunning it's our pleasure to honor you. So with you go our wishes good and true. As we dedicate our '56 Emeraude to you. 2 Dawn Dilley............ The auditorium was filled to capacity with friends and relatives of the graduating seniors. The speaker was Dr. Frank Phillips, Executive Secretary of World Vision, Inc. He gave an interesting and timely address which was enjoyed by all present. The high spot of the evening was, of course, the presentation of the diplomas. The courses offered have been popular. Over half of all boys enrolled have taken agriculture since 1944. It is recognized by the State Vocational Agriculture Department as one of the outstanding departments in the state. Since 1944,- to the present time, our de- partment has been designated as Keystone, a Master Chapter, each year for the past 12 years. The agriculture courses offered the past twelve years are: Animal Husbandry, Farm Crops, Soils and Farm Management. Besides day classes, a night school for adult farmers has been held each year in the granges. Training in leadership is offered all agricultural students through their organ- ization of Future Farmers of America, better known as the F. F. A. The F.F. A. is a national organization of, by and for boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools. It functions under the provision of the National Vocational Education Acts. As an integral part of the program of vocational education in agriculture in the public school system of America, the F.F. A. has become well known in recent years. No national student organization enjoys greater freedom of self- government under adult counsel and guidance, than the F.F. A. Organized in November 1928, it has served to motivate and vitalize the systematic instruction offered to students of vocational agriculture, and to provide further training in farmer -citizenship. The F.F. A. is an intra-curricular activity having its origin in a definite part of the school curriculum--vocational agriculture. Among other things, mem- bers learn through active participation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to buy and sell co-operatively; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves; and to assume civic responsibility. The foundation upon which the F.F. A. organization is built includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, co-operation, service, thrift, scholar- ship improved agriculture, citizenship, and patriotism. The F. F. A. is a non-profit, non-political, farm youth organization of volun- tary membership, designed to take its place with other agencies striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of country life. Improved agriculture, better local communities, and more efficient farmer- citizens, are the result of this F.F. A. training. 34 csCetteretteA Easter Parade was the theme of the Letterette initiation held this year as the new members displayed many strange hats.
