h, A The Richard Mendenhall Store - built in 1824, served as a supply stop for passing travelers. The spirit of education was as contagious as an epi- demic, for another girls' school which offered dormitory and boarding accommodations was founded by other auspices as the Jamestown Female College, N.C. Unfortunately at the beginning of the Civil War these buildings were destroyed by fire. It is well established history that always there has been a school in Jamestown for the enrichment and betterment of its citizenship. Through the leadership of giant scholars boys studied Greek and Latin, history, mathematics and English. Aspirants to the professions of law and medicine read their subjects within the offices of practitioners. In fact, the interest in these professions grew to such bounds that George Mendenhall opened a school of law near his own residence which came to be known as Telmont Law School. Many young men desiring to be doctors came to the Medical School that was conducted by Dr. Madison Lindsay in Jamestown. Among those who distinguished themselves and became dear to communities around about was Dr. Shubal Coffin, grandfather of Mrs. Lucy Coffin Ragsdale for whom Ragsdale school was named. gif ....1i,iY a i X i s 2 f f if , a 2 S x 3 Q ,..,L Mx e- fEvidence of the types of transportation which played an important part in the history of Jamestown can be found on the YRagsdale farm.
