As a teacher, as an Annual Staff Advisor, as a Co-French Club Sponsor, and most of all as a friend, Mrs. McKelvey has gained our admiration and respect. We the class of 1972 wish to pay tribute to this ex¬ ceptional woman by dedicating The Echo to Mrs. McKelvey. A beautiful fall 14 day , October 8th, 1971. . t-1 tr- ca h O O m It was the same old story. 1 9 7 1 A 6-4 seasonal mark, Three All-Conference players, Too many close losses. Early defeats at the hands of Eastern Alamance and South¬ east Guilford cost the Tigers a shot at the Mid-State 3A Con¬ ference title. RHS still had a chance when the Rams of NE Guilford invaded Tiger Territory for Homecoming: 1971. After 48 minutes of gridiron mayhem, the Rams left the em¬ barrassed Tigers behind with a 21-0 shutout. There were some bright spots, however. Junior running back Prince Deese will be back, as will a good deal of other players. Many seniors, also, performed with excellent ability. Still, the Tigers mauled Allen Jay. That in itself takes away some of the pain. A 6-4 record is not that bad, anyhow. Halfback Prince Deese suits up for another performance. Jim Bolden takes off with an intercepted pass. i 16 Head Coach Hugh Gordon looks on as he explains the situation to Jon Watkins. He re¬ tired following the close of this season after seven years as Tiger mentor. Sophomore monster man Matt Gloster takes a well deserved break during a crucial contest. Northwest Guilford’s Mark Wilson, (20) is stacked up by Tigers Jim Bolden (5) and Lee Wilson (71). Brad Hoover (72) and Horace Gilmer (70) look on. Football Team Romps to 8-0 For the second consecutive year, the Rags¬ dale Junior Varsity Football squad has fought through an entire campaign and finished with an unblemished record. This season the JV’s swept to eight straight victories, which includ¬ ed three shutouts and only 37 points allowed for the entire stretch. As head coach, Mike Raybon had seen great success while working with this underclass¬ man group. He had been able to mold in them the confidence of winners, along with the pride of true sportsmen. Building athletes for future varsity teams is the prime target of the JV team. They enjoy great success on their level of competition. Should they continue to improve, there is little doubt that the varsity records will also see greater heights than previously en¬ countered. For any club that goes undefeated, con¬ gratulations are in order. Anticipating change, freedom and excitement. High School ... a dream realized. Familiar faces fit warmly into the masses of people rushing through the halls. Rules and more rules. Football games brought about enthusiasm . . . new sophomores had found their way to the at¬ tendance office. During those two hour intervals, they tasted the misery of exams . . . but when they were over, routine continued and life was the same. It was all just happening now . . . and they weren’t different anymore . . . just part of it. Part of the school, part of the dreams, part of the excitement of high school living. 45 Mr. T. G. A new coach took the reins of RHS this season. Larry Dunn had to solve a key Tiger problem: inconsistency. Rules are always made to be broken; thus, the faculty found it hard to en¬ force the ‘smuggling’ law. r I Mike Glover started his third season at guard. He turned in many excellent per¬ formances for Rags¬ dale. Dejection and gloom fill Terry Hill’s face. Maybe it is not that RHS is behind, but that the coach has his hands full as seen at the right hand corner. Moving in at one for¬ ward position, Willie Morgan shared the playing time in the front court. Filling up the other guard spot in Dunn’s three-guard offense was sharpshooting junior Terry Dawson. As has been a precedent in the past, the Tigers stumbled into a “Comedy of Errors” too many times (above). No less than 50 people participate within the gates of the Winter Sports Palace. Only ten are in the “major” tower. The multitude of fans fills the gym to its capacity. At Ragsdale the problem is two-fold: the “minor” sports produce winners but are losers in another sense since they don't have the enthusiasm of home supporters. Even though no one purposely labels a sport “major” or “minor” the choice seems apparent. A “major” sport is de¬ termined only by spectators, not by coach¬ es or participants. At Ragsdale the so-called minor sports are winners in technicality, but losers in reality. Just how “minor” is a minor sport? A Juniors . . . Back again . . . smiling , laughing with old friends and new acquaintances. Not new, not old . . . just right . . . Many juniors came back with hopes of making this year as good or bet¬ ter than the last, and their concern and in¬ volvement grew. School spirit grew. The first pep rally was a big success and Ragsdale beat Allen Jay. Winter came and SAT tests excited some and depressed some. Everyone got used to Haney and dug deep into their U.S. History books. Class rings were ordered and some boys didn’t keep theirs long. But term papers deadened the enthusiasm. Basketball season was exciting as the junior players did well for the varsity team. Dunn broke them in for ’73. And as Senior graduation neared, the juniors began to realize that their day was not so far away. 95 Mrs. Mary Eagle . . . The efforts of many people have made Ragsdale a respected name among her peers. The result of many extra hours of work and sacrifice, the honors are many. The debators led the way in many tournaments, and the D.E. students took many honors in district competition. The quiet successes in J.V. Football, J.V. Basketball, and all the girls’ sports only add to the stature of the school's image. June Biggerstaff and Linda Childress, as chief and co-chief cheerleaders, en¬ couraged the students to join in enthus¬ iastic support of the athletic program. The Booster’s Club, led by many de¬ voted and hard-working parents, con¬ tributed universal gym equipment to help complete athletic facilities the school can offer. The annual staff is very grateful to Ronnie Barker, Ken Heybrock, Brady Murray, Grant Thorn, and Bobby Win¬ slow for their photography included in this yearbook. Linda Murdock has com¬ posed much of the lovely copy used. The patience and cooperation of the faculty made publication deadlines much easier to meet. The school was fortunate to have Pierre Francois Stoerkle from Switzer¬ land to become its friend. Yet tops on the list of people who promote Ragsdale must be Mr. T. G. Madison, whose constant efforts for the individual student have kept problems to a minimum and successes to a peak. -sr TW° girls ready to boost Ragsdale in the 1973 Echo are Lisa Tillson, new Editor (left), and Chris Stevenson, the Business Manager (right). Sean O’Kane, pictured on the right above, became King of the Mardi-Gras, which was sponsored by all county French Clubs; then they led the gala costume parade through the halls. With her helpful and friendly manner in the front office, Mrs. Audrey Wrike has become Ragsdale’s best public rela¬ tions worker. Many Individuals Contribute The accomplishments of a team or group are successful if a caring person is in charge. A tedious and often unreward¬ ing job is that of daily preparing nutritious food that meets fed¬ eral requirements. Under the capable and dedicated efforts of Mrs. Margaret Woody, the cafeteria staff was able to offer a cold plate as a second choice on the menu this year. School could not be run ef¬ ficiently without valuable school workers, whose assistance makes attendance and guidance work accurate and less taxing for faculty members. Led by Mr. Tom Payne and Mr. James Kenan, the faithful workers care¬ fully record absences with their codes and deliver daily absentee lists to teachers. The job of counselling and record-keeping for each student in school is done by the coun¬ selors with the help of guidance workers who run errands and perform many other duties. Keeping the building as clean as possible is an endless and repetitious job, but the Sandford family works daily. Ricky Cheek and Curtis McClendon work every afternoon also. Mrs. Delores Riddle Mrs. Margaret Woody n Jackso Superb Efforts In Ragsdale’s Behalf Going beyond the call of duty to help with sports events were many dedicated workers. During football season, Mr. Moran broadcasted games; Mr. Kenan tallied the scores; Mr. Stancil, Mr. Chance, Mr. Bailey, and Mr. Waggoner kept the gates. For ■a use in analyzing plays, Mr. Kloster- •gSSfr man took movies during football and later during basketball season. Called the best scout in the area, Mr. Haney visited opponent games. Faithfully attending two games a week during basketball season, Mr. « and Mrs. Olin Jackson and Mrs. Kathy — Dick kept varsity scores; Lind a Bel¬ lows kept the girls’ basketball scores. Mr. Alan Dick was the official statistics-keeper. Wrestling was helped by Mr. Haney and various junior varsity wrestlers. New this year in the capacity of Administrative Assistant, Mr. Mills inherited Mr. Moran’s job of handling the buses and their problems. Taking on special duties because they wanted Ragsdale to be a better school were many time-sacrificing teachers. Miss Boone handled all audio-visual equipment for the classrooms and stage. Checking hall passes were many of the men on the faculty who were assigned to hall duty. Students also helped in too many capacities to enumerate. The parking lot committee contributed an hour daily to checking violators. The prom, homecoming, talent show, assembly, and school spirit committees are only a few of the many student groups who worked constantly to improve school life. oner Attendance Office helpers Students Prepare Now Each year boys from Ragsdale go to Wake Forest for a week of instruction in North Carolina’s governmental activities. There they set up their own state, electing a governor, lieutenant governor, and other state officials. This year’s attendants to Boys’ State were, left to right, Ronny Woody, John Ellis, and David Collins. Two girls from the school spend a week in the summer at UNC-G. Meeting with girls from all over the state, they learn the functions of different levels in North Carolina government. Laine Wrike and Debbie Hamp¬ ton attended Girls’ State during the summer of 1971. Governor’s School is located at Salem College where it provides its campus for 400 talented and gifted students. These students are guests of the state for 7 weeks as they study the different aspects of 20th century thoughts and ideas. Nominated this year are Mary Kozanosky, Sandra Gaston, Carol Marion, Gini Stout, Paul Newby, De atra He ge, and Brian Sartori. 134 For Successful Futures Gorden Widenhouse, Pam Winslow, Loren Hill, Susan Bass, and Martin Eakes participated with college stu¬ dents in classes at the Tri-College Consortium for High School Summer Scholars at Greensboro College during the summer. Martin Eakes, Loren Hill, Tom Fawcett, and David Collins went with Miss Boone to the Science Symposium at Duke JJniversity to attend lectures and demon¬ strations in the field of natural science. Loren Hill and Carian Barber each spent a week in Washington, D.C. at the Presidential Classroom learning more about the workings of our government. 135 District winners of the Distributive Education Student-of-the-Year con¬ test are Andrea Weaver and Jay Keeter. Not only superior in scholastic ability, Martin has also proved himself a leader in many extra-curricular activities. Martin worked diligently to write a school constitution and aids the effectiveness of Student Congress with his enthusiasm for student involvement. Having red hair and a temper to match, coupled with an intense dislike of mediocrity make him try con¬ stantly to improve his surroundings and himself. Martin is a model student who ex¬ cels in every endeavor, and who pursues his ideas to the fullest. The future will definitely be richer for the contributions of this Ragsdale scholar! Salutatorian Ginger Loraine Marr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Marr, transferred to Rags¬ dale the beginning of her junior year. While being an active participant of the total school program, she has earned the second highest average in her graduating class. For her high average and other fine qualities, she was selected for membership in Beta Club and National Honor Society. For outstanding citizenship she was chosen DAR Good Citizen for this year. Her musical training and ability qualified her for attendance at the Governor’s School during the summer of 1971. Ginger is a true lady, possessing maturity, sincerity, and capability.
