IN MEMORIAM DANIEL BAXTER KING December 6, 1950 - March 7, 1969 CROSSING THE BAR And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to see. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embarkg For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. -Tennyson THE. The person to whom the 1969 ECHO has been dedicated is characterized by his deep concern for his students. This teacher cares for the welfare and progress of those who study under him, and he is always willing to give aid and encouragement. His capacities for understanding and patience have helped everyone who has been in his classes. He gives of himself freely, and is friendly to all. One trait that has endeared him to all who have knownhimis his sharp sense of humor. His ability to laugh has cheered many gloomy days, and has made the mastering of difficult subjects easier to struggle through. He has the rare talent of being a friend and a respected adult at the same time. It is with a great amount of gratitude, pride, and pleasure that we, the Class of 1969, dedicate this annual to Mr. James Kenan, who has shown us that learning can be an enjoyable experience. 17 IN MEMORIAM ll. it MICHAEL RAY SHOOK June 17,1952 - August 9, 1968 What is life but an overture Of Immortality? A promise of a greater Symphony to come -- And some with young and Wavering fingers have plucked Those golden strings before The concert Master Ere other ears are tuned to Golden strains. The memory of the mortal Notes live on -- And life will echo the song Each left behind, And know the pride lies Not in all received But lives within the realm Of all each gave. -Miss Judy Plummer 18 IN MEMO RIAM JAMES ALBERT LEDBETTER December 17, 1952 - November 5, 1968 The Lord is my shepherdg I shall not want. Mrs. Audrey Wrike, book- keeper-secretary, and Mrs. Georgia Lundy, secretary, had numerous duties, such as answering the con- stantly ringing telephones, taking care of transcripts, looking after mail, and answering the many questions of people who pass through the office each day. It is putting' creativity to use in thought, self expression, and written composition. This communication is the basis of the curriculum of the English Department at Ragsdale High School. In a three-track program with levels of English for the advanced, average, and non-college student, basic English fundamentals and vocabulary are taught with creative writing and literature. Taken by the majority of the students, Algebra I and Geometry are the most prevalent in the preparatory program. In these courses, the student learns the essential fundamentals of Algebra and Geometry, particularly in regard to theory. After completion of these two subjects, the department advises the students to sample the more com- plicated courses of Algebra Il and Al- gebra III and Trigonometry. The student of trigonometry learns the sim- ple trig ratios and applies them in solving practical problems. Algebra III allows interested students to advance still further into higher math. The Mathematics Department does not exclude those students who are not interested in theoretical math. It offers a special course in general mathematics for those who need an understanding of practical math and its usage through everyday application. The course is also recommended as an excellent back- ground for any type of mathematical pursuit. . In ,' gf: Y ' K -If' in-. ? Considering travel abroad, advanced specialized study in a European country, service in the Peace Corps, or a job at the United Nations? Many students will probably encounter these desires in the near future. Since the times of the Greeks, our world has changed to such an extent that man is not well equipped to cope with the increased need for commun- ication between countries. Because our world has grown since the earlier civilizations, and yet has become smaller because of advanced communication, we feel that language education is essential to students and we commend the foreign language department for its excellent standards and continual growth. The chemistry program is a pre- sentation of the compostition of the com- mon metallic and non-metallic elements through a study of their properties as evi- denced in the Periodic Table with the emphasis placed on the application of chem- ical laws and principles. The physicis cur- riculum attempts to explain the fundamental principles of matter and energy in con- nection with its effect in mechanics, heat, light, sound, and electricity. Each lab science is taught in a fully-equipped laboratory classroom in which the students and faculty have access to a variety of apparatus. Preceeding the Coronation and the game was a week of flurried activity. There were many late night float sessions while clubs worked dilligently to prepare floats in time for the parade. On Thursday evening, the cheerleaders pre- sented a grand pep rally. The girls had worked long and hard to present an exciting rally. Following the pep rally, the students went to the parking lot and formed a spirited circle. The bonfire was the biggest ever, and it added even ANITA ARMFIELD Homecoming Queen , ft, get , more warmth to the cheery crowd. Friday was a day filled with happiness and suspense, Homecoming got into full swing with the presentation of the Court and the corona- tion. Hearts beat quickly and breaths were held as the name of the 1968 Homecoming Queen was announced. Anita Armtield was chosen Queen, HCMECOMI NG FESTIVITIES and June McMahan received the title of Maid of Honor. The student body then proceeded to the rear of the school to watch the parade. The floats, cars, and band moved swiftly by, imbeddjng a memory of color and beauty in the student's minds. Homecoming came to its peak at the football game. The Tigers fought hard throughout the game and roared to a victory, defeating the Bartlett-Yancey Bucaneers. When the final buzzer sounded the score stood at 12-7 in favor of the Flying Tigers. Following the game, the students were invited to a dance in the gym. Music was provided by the Highlights. A reception was held in honor of the alumnae in the cafeteria. Necessity required that a team be formed from the group of fine athletes. Not only shining abilities, but also cooperation under the leadership of Coach Jack Hinkle helped to make the team champions. Each and every victory was as much mental as physical. Last year more than games were won, Not only were victories won on the field, but giant victories were CHAMPIONS IN won in the minds of men. It was the baseball team of last year that was humble in victory. It was the team who immediately after victory, made their first move toward the defeated foe to offer congratulationsg instead of toward their own cheering fans to receive congratulations. Perhaps it is best to put it as many fine men did, They were winners. . .both on and off the field.
