Striving to help every student to do his best work, she is always ready to clarify, or to challenge him with additional work. But'more than this, she exudes a personal warmth? that causes her students to regard her as a friendly and interested advisor as well as a respected teacher. Strange halls, new teachers, older students, most of whom were unknown added up to make the sophomores feel, at first, insigni- ficant and lost. But as the year grew older, so did they. By joining clubs, supporting the athletic teams, participating in school pro- jects, they become an important part of the student body. And now, as the biggest class at Ragsdale looks back on the year 1967- 1968, they are glad to remember. After two years of being underclassmen, they were gladly awaiting their junior year. With this new year came the excitement of work- ing on homecoming floats, the strain of the long hours of PSAT and college boards, the elation of their first prom, the feeling of achievement as students were accepted into honor clubs, and the thrill of wearing their class rings. They could proudly claim to be the Most School Spirited class at Rags- dale. As the year progressed the juniors realized that their senior year with its all exciting times was fast approaching. Four years ago 258 green freshmen might just as well have talked of a trip to the moon as be- ing seniors. But four years came and slipped away without anyone realizing where they'd gone. Some breezed along and some had it tough, but all could pride themselves on a common experience of four of the finest l ABN I 1 v 5. years they'd ever spent. The last year was the best. The class took over offices, edited publications, supported athletic teams through victory and defeat and worked hard to keep the school and the class of 1968 second to none. As graduation approached, there were few tears. Seniors, with their dignity to up- hold, couldn't appear to be ruffled even by sentiment. But there were lumps in the throats of many seniors as they tried to remember places and people whom they would never see again. After graduation? One thing is certain-a million wonderful memories of Ragsdale High School will re- main with each member of the Class of 1968. px r eafj . .. . Each year the students add another volume to their collection, which they will treasure forever. Much time and hard work went into the pages of this year's ECHO. The staff, under the direction of editors Suzanne Simmons and Keith Williams, has attempted to make several alterations in this year's ECHO. The industrious members of the staff have worked diligently to meet deadlines, many working long hours after school identifying pictures, writing copy, typing, developing pictures, and performing the numerous other jobs necessary in the publication of an annual. In the summer, Business Manager, Sue Stephenson, launched the selling of advertisements. All during the school year Sue looked after the financial side of the publication. NORA JOYCE Queen ,J The 1967 Homecoming was one of the most successful in the history of Ragsdale, The festivities began Thursday night with the powderpuff football game and the pre- sentation of the powderpuff court. After the game a bonfire was held to boost the spirits of the Flying Tigers. Friday afternoon the traditional presen- tation of the court to the student body took place in the auditorium. Following the Coronation the attendants were driven in the colorful Homecoming Parade. 140 1967 Homecoming Queen Homecoming week excitement reached its peak during the Friday night halftime activities. The bands performance, featuring the majorettes, was one of many highlights. As the band played, the members of the Court were driven around the field in con- vertibles and then escorted to their places in front of the spectators. As the spectators listened expectantly, it was an- nounced that the Maid of Honor was Janie Ryan, and the 1967 Homecoming Queen was Nora Joyce. Nora, with tears in her eyes, was crowned by Don Lewis, Student Council President, as her escort, Tommy Caudle, looked on with pride. Although Ragsdale was not victorious over North- west, the team extended a fine effort. Homecoming week was brought to a close at the annual Home- coming Dance after the game with the Mystics pro- viding the music. As Homecoming of 1967 was brought to a close, everyone could surely say that it was an event to remember. This year the senior class presented a first in the world of theatre here at Ragsdale. Under the direction of Mrs. Charlotte Hallberg and Mrs. Peggy Neel with Julie Faircloth assisting, dramatically inspired seniors presented a series of plays, including The Wall-to-Wall War , Suspecious Mind and The WidoW's Mite . The Wall-to-Wall War , a two act tragedy, is a powerful play concerning a worker in an insurance office who goes berserk because of the concern he has for the war in Viet Nam. The other two plays, each one act, were on the lighter side and were presented on the same night. Suspecious Mind is centered around a girl in her late teens who constantly suspects strangers of being spies and murderers. Her actions result in some embarrassment for her and her friends, but later, her suspicions are proved not all unfounded. The Widow's Mitew a delightful comedy, tells of an aging and penniless widowis decision to live her last days to the fullest. Taking advantage of other people's greed and gullibility, she establishes herself in the best hotel in town and runs up an enormous bill, but still manages to get off Scotfree. Held on the campus of Salem College in Winston Salem, the seven week session is designed to enrich the students knowledge and skills in his major field of interest, The school has also pioneered in plotting the courses of two areas academically uncharted for the high school level--philosophy and psychology. The student at the Governor's School learns many new facts in his major area of interest. But more valuable to the student than facts are the intangible attitudes and ambitions he acquires. A true desire to learn and the ability to learn independently are qualities that will serve him well throughout his life.
