Rafael Cordero fl79O-18695
Rafael Cordero y Molina was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His
parents were freed slaves who had learned to read and write and who
taught poor children without being paid.
In l8lO, Rafael Cordero founded the first school for black children.
-This was the beginning of fifty eight years of dedicated teaching to poor
children, black and white.
Of his teaching, he used to say, UYO tumbo el arbol y, los des
cortezog manes mas habiles que las mias se encargaran de labrar la madera
y darle barnizou
