THE TEMPER OF THE TIMES . . Bravo Company fords the river: Six months without 'bang-bang' A DAY IN THE DWINDLING WAR HOW WILL YOUTH VOTE? A DECADE OF INTENSIFIED COMPETITION THE BATTLE OF THE SUBURBS The dark horses of 1972 are not candidates — they are voters. They are 25 million tantalizing Americans whose party allegiances are mostly unpledged and whose political preferences are untested in any previous Presidential election. They are the mystery factor that beckons most candidates to quest for the key to their affections and clouds every prophesy of who will win. They are, to he specific, the young citizens currently between the ages of 17 and 23, who will be eligible next year to vote in a Presidential election for the first time. Not since 1920, when women won the franchise, have more potential voters been created at a single stroke than by the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified last summer, which lowered the voting age to 18 — and thus very noticeably altered the climate of the election season. 20
