There are themes of progress, of traditions, of experiences that tvill hold a special place as long as memory will last. We, the class of nineteen sixty-five, have a different purpose for our Bee Hive. Our un-if linP, thread is not simply the past or the future, tradition or change, or parts of a memory. Our reason for this hook is you, the individual, without whom there would be no hook, no exper-iencey no Radford College. The life is yours, now. The choices all are yours. DEDICATION - 1965 BEE HIVE T Every young adult needs someone who serves as guide and example in the uncertainty and decision-making of early adulthood. For your knowledge— For your understanding— For your interest— For your responsiveness and dependability— For your guidance— For your honesty— For your sincerity— For your love of truth— We thank you and dedicate the 1965 BEE HIVE to you, our class sponsor. Dr. John Grove Barker. DR. JOHN GROVE BARKER 5 I Great expectations overwhelm as all as we start a college career. It’s a chance to begin again. It's a chance to develop new friendships and to strengthen old or neglected ones. It’s a chance to leave oar old image behind and make a new one. It’s a chance to become someone important or to become just part of the group. The college career is all these things to a rising freshman. but as fall tarns to winter and winter to spring, new visions and self-concepts replace the old ones. Vo longer is it important to begin again — rather it is a challenge to maintain the status quo. Acquaintances ebb and flow regularly; real friendships come but rarely. Our old image becomes more appealing to us and security comes as we develop it. Self-importance no longer fascinates us, nor docs being just a part of the group. Finding ourselves — believing in ourselves — and holding true to ourselves despite the conditions about us — these now are our great expectations. So long parents ... sec you Thanksgiving.' The Freshman Sing-Along Group “Mom packed it . . . how am I supposed to? ... ’ “I’ve been here a week and can't find a thing.' 6 By Ccorgc. I’ve got it. Our life behind dorm walls will he part of us forever. The time-alone, never before appreciated, is a precious thought for us now. The bed where we study, sleep, eat, laugh and cry is all important to us. The girl upstairs with whom we have a private joke, the girl downstairs with whom we have a war of nerves . . . they are both part of us. Eleven o'clock dorm meetings and fire drills in the night . . . will come to our night thoughts in the future. The dorm, the hall, the suite, the room . . . all will come back to us when we try to remember — “Emerson had his Walden and 1 have my hair-dryer. “The color of the week is . . To save us from being dull we have our good time. Relaxing with friends, a walk around the block, a soap opera on TV, even meals in the dining hall bring us diversions from our routine. We’re kept content as long as we can get to a coke and a hot dog. We can be made to forget by the chaos in the cove. We can he soothed to complacency by a cup of coffee in the sanctuary of the Virginia Room. Our resources are unlimited. 1 LES - PANCAKES ICKEN BASKET Pete’s on the wagon . . . but the party’s here anyway. Do you feel someone watching?” Let’s order waffles.' This is my house ... I like it!' We go to classes lest we forget that education is merely a stage in our development. We pretend to study when wc sit on the lawn. We really do study if we have a book, a chair and a table. When exams come around were masters of the quick-study technique and haunt the wee morning hours like zombies from the deep. Our fellas are fun. Some, we sec often — some only rarely, some we see once, some we only write and Iona to see. We all show at least one boy the campus. We all have trekked down the hill to the movie or sat in the cove and talked or walked the long way back to the dorm. We've had all sorts of dates and have even kidded ourselves into believing that study dates exist. Our weeks don’t seem quite so long when we know he'll be here on Saturday. Where else can a fella ko with no tie? Imagine! . . . this trip's CO-KDI” Ticket plca.se . . . May I have your ticket?’ No Pabst on tap but we've got Pepsi in the bottle.” “Shades of Broadway Won’t you come home Bill Bailey . . I'm for scrambled ejjjss how 'bout you? Within each of us, there is a great deal of ham Some of us only show this side to our friends, others of us work on it and develop it into a talent. We can glory in the pomp and circumstance of a full dress program or feel good with the glow of being appreciated by our friends. Double bubble, toil and trouble.' 'Half a league, half a league, half a league onward . . “Just give me a little push . . . The pounding of competition and the kceness of the open-air surges in our veins. We take to the open field with the slightest provocation and the sport within us jumps at the chance to play the game. And now for the kick off . . 12 Help! “It squeaked! Where there are people, conversation must follow as a natural process. Being girls makes the process even more natural. We love to discuss any topic of the day. Our conversations are sometimes a good excuse for a little party. Killing the time between exams or between classes is the most serviceable aspect of our conversation. The rough communication we learn . . . wc understand and if this is not our aim then all is in vain. People, people, who needs people . . Our days here are marked by the seasons The dense fog of the late fall somehow checks our spirit and causes deep feelings difficult to account for. The snows come and our child-like fascination soon fades into testy adult contempt. Bring us warm months and our spirits will rise into frenzied abandon. We're glad that we’re young. We’re glad for our Spring. Neither rain, sleet nor a hoard ncro« the door will bar R.C. students, from their P.O. Either put a roof on it or call Tom Sawyer.” Ours is a generation of immense growth. Yl'e feel it particularly in the physical growth of our campus. Two-by-four boards, mils, workmen and wet paint are part of our daily lives . . . at first we notice - but familarity dulls our awakeners until a new building is opened, a sidewalk is missing or our favorite tree is cut down. “Ooh what a big hole we have here” 15 ' Twas the night before Christmas. . . “I want two front teeth . . “Oh, tannenbaum . . By the time we are ready to leave this campus, four birthdays and Christmases have come and gone. We’ve been surprized, congratulated and ignored. We’ve been glad to leave in December and anxious to return in January. We’ve smelled pine, seen colored lights and laughed at our classmates as Santa. Our days before Christmas have been full of the pressures of exams. But when exams have been over, wc have relaxed .. . and our Christmases have been bright. 16 The favorite son . . ''They had a sale on four cornered hats . . As our years here draw to a close, we have become real people within our own rights. We never hesitate to stand alone to support our beliefs and yet we’re never ashamed to stand together. The Strengths of our association here will go with us always. Tent meetin’ on the campus.' 17 Womens sufferage’ I love a rally. “I’m holding up the wall . . . what are you doing? When ice first started out, graduation teas the end of our aim and yet, the closer it came the more we realized the vast ness of Knowledge yet to be conquered. Now at the end, we have arrived at a beginning. We stand poised — We may not go back, we may not stand still — We must go fortcard. All the choices are ours — we have no compass — we must be prepared. Docs anyone have an aspirin?” Grad students' happy hour. SONG OF THE MYSTIC I walk down the Valley of Silence Down the dim, voiceless calley — alone! And I hear not the full of a footstep Around me, save God's and my own; And the hush of my heart is as holy As havens where angels have flown. Long ago was I weary of voices Whose music my heart could not win, Long ago was I weary of noises That fretted my soul with their din, Long ago was 1 weary of places Where I met but the human — and sin. And I toiled on, heart-tired of the Human, And I moaned midst the mazes of men Till I knelt, long ago, at an altar And I heard a voice call me. Since then I walk down the Valley of Silence That lies far beyond human ken. Do you ask what I found in the Valley? T'is my trysting place with the Divine. And I fell at the feet of the Holy Ami above me, a voice said: Be mine.” And there rose from the depths of my spirit An echo: My heart shall be thine” Do you ask me the place of the Valley, Ye hearts that arc narrowed by Care? It lieth ajar between mountains. And Cod and His angels (ire there: And one is the dark mount of Sorrow, And one the bright mountain of Prayer. — Abram J. Ryan 19 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Doesn't anybody know how to stop this tiling? ' President Martin presides at weekly Administrative Council meeting. A special committee composed of Board Members and Faculty examined the stated purpose of Radford College and gave it not so much a change in direction as a clearer focus. This is bound to accelerate our progress toward this unclouded goal. Another committee appointed by the Board was instructed to study the new purpose and expected growth of the college and to recommend a campus plan for this development. It is most important to locate new buildings so that each fits into a campus plan which con-situtes a useful and aesthetic whole. The result will not materially expand the area of the campus, but does provide for more efficient use of our present campus. The economic use of this space will call for taller buildings—both dormitories and academic structures. While the new Radford College resulting from this planning will provide strange features, the real and most important concepts of permanent value, long a part of the Radford Spirit, will remain unchanged. The 1964-65 academic year has been a turning point in the history of Radford College. At this time the college administration felt much like a football half-back who had just broken through the line to find the field ahead clear for a substantial gain. This situation calls for increased effort and speed, and perhaps a sudden change of direction. The breakthrough at Radford came as a result of a complete shift of administrative control. The 1964 General Assembly gave this college a new and independent Board of Visitors, responsible only for the government of this college. Immediately this Board took a new. fresh look at the purpose of this institution of learning and its place in Virginia’s coordinated state system of higher education. 22 DR. CHARLES KNOX MARTIN, JR. President of Radford College 23 RADFORD COLLEGE BOARD OF VISITORS The Board of Visitors, appointed by the Governor of the State of Virginia, coordinates the activities of Radford College. Seated left to right: Miss Mary lane Dudley. Mrs. J. Chambers Bristow, Col. Charles H. Rccd. Leonard C. Muse. Miss Elizabeth Ann Lawler, Mrs. Henderson P. Graham, Mrs. Donald C. Here she cooks, washes clothes, plans bulletin boaids, dicusses blind dates, fights with the belligerent coke machine, studies, and (when she finds time) sleeps. The dormitory is a particularly good example of self-government. Dorm mates select house councils who give organization to the social structure of dorm life. From checking white slips to organizing coke bottle removal and attempting to reduce riot hours by enforcing quiet hours,” the house councils make it eaiser for as many as 366 people to live under one. long roof. LUTHERAN STUDENT FELLOWSHIP The Lutheran Student Association serves to stimulate Christian fellowship among students on campus. This year the members have sponsored Sunday night programs, a dinner for incoming freshmen, a Halloween party for the children of Christ Church, a Thanksgiving visit to the Lutheran Children's Home in Salem, and a Christmas social held in Blacksburg - with the Virginia Tech L.S.A. NEWMAN CLUB Members of the Newman Club participate in Campus Carnival, hold spaghetti dinners, sponsor fall and winter dances, enjoy Sunday dinners at V.P.I., and in other ways meet for instructional and social development. The club offers Catholic students an opportunity to become closer to each other through weekly meetings and group discussions. 228 WESTMINSTER FELLOWSHIP All students interested in. fellowship in a Christian organization are invited to join Westminster Fellowship. These students engage in activities with Virginia Tech, as well as various group activities at Radford, such as Christmas caroling and church projects. Sunday evening suppers and group discussions aid in creating a true Christian fellowship among the students. WESLEY FOUNDATION The Wesley Foundation provides means by which the Methodist students of Radford College can join together for social, intellectual, recreational and religious endeavors. 219 YWCA The Young Women's Christian ssociation att mpts to find expression for Christian principles and ethics in the spiritual and social life of the campus and the community. The Cabinet members returned to campus and provided an information booth and offered individual assistance throughout Orientation Week. The annual Song Fcst, held in front of Founder’s Hall, provided an opportunity for a warm fellowship amid the uncertainties of the opening of a new college year. Later in the month at a (Joke Party, the Cabinet was presented and each member explained his duties and plans for the coming year. A service of dedication was held for the new members and Cabinet at Tyler Presbyterian Church. The YWCA has the privilege of sponsoring the only fund-raising drive on campus during the college year -Campus Carnival. The goal was $3,000 and this w as surpassed by $1,000. The success of this year's carnival was due to the teamwork of many individuals and organizations. Special praise goes to the Queen candidates who raised the largest share of the money. The childrens Merry-Go-Round set the mood for the festivities. The Thanksgiving program was a stage presentation — Think and Thank - which portrayed the average college student talking with her conscience about the opportunities on the Radford campus. Many organized activities were depicted on stage. At the November meeting, members made Thanksgiving favors, using various small toys, which were given to the children at the local hospital. To the local Welfare Office the YWCA gave food and clothing which had been collected in each (lorm on campus. 73o YWCA “Christmas on Campus used as its theme “Christmas Around tne World.” Foreign students and others told of the various customs of Christmas. The Choral and Glee Clubs sang songs and carols from various countries and the Orchestra gave musical selections. The Band accompanied the carol singing at the lighted Christmas trees. Integrity in 1965' was the theme for Religious Emphasis Week. Dr. Van Bogard Dunn. Dean of the Methodist Theological Seminary of Ohio, Delaware. Ohio, was guest speaker. Students and faculty participated in three discussions on social, academic and professional integrity. Two of the general meetings were devoted to the problems of modern dating, courtship and marriage. The first speaker was Rev. Richard Howerton of Blacksburg and the second. Dr. Haas, a Radford gynecologist. Sunday Forum for “V Freshmen from Radford and V.P.I. had for its discussion, The Jewish Faith.” led by Professor Kalison of V.P.I.
