RADFORD BY SEASONS by Sandra Baker FALL The excitement of beginning, fear of the new, wondering what comes next The hard thrust of returning responsibility, trying to adjust from the freedom of Summer The cool mornings, hurrying to warmth The hot afternoons, sweating in the mornings wools The early fog that runs away from the sun and disappears The trees, green to red to brown The dead leaves rustling down the sidewalk in circles and streams and then lying still WINTER The grey days that try to brighten but never succeed and are depressed The monotonous music of rain leaving puddles to soak through your shoes and worms on the sidewalk to be stepped on The wind scattering Fall’s leaves away and blowing up your sleeves and numbing your hands The silent snow rendering white beauty to the world around it, making the ground slippery and soggy and forming little white men in the yard Everything in hibernation: The cold — the eternal cold that you try to avoid even though you know you must go out SPRING From the grey of winter emerge blue skies and green grass and the joy of living The joy in being alive, in witnessing the rebirth of all that Winter killed fills your being You hear the racket of birds and the clatter of people and you rejoice in your own vigor The excitement of beginning has become the joy of accomplishment, the joy of completion.
