McConnell Library Radford University 106582 SIGHTS OF 1960-61 Schools are perhaps the most subject to change of all institutions on earth. The student body changes every year, the faculty changes olso but more slowly. Buildings are torn down; buildings are built up. This year, 1960-61, has brought to Radford College a new administration building and a home management house, additions to the faculty and student body, more frequent lectures and concerts, extension of classroom space and innumerable other changes. Annuals, like schools and indeed all things, moke changes. In 1913-14, when Radford State Normal and Industrial School began, the yearbook wasn't even the BEE HIVE, it was the RADNOR. For all its change, some things about a school remain the same. In 1914, there was a certain Professor of Household Arts at Radford named M'Ledge Moffett, B. A. Founders Hall was here. A student admitted that her pet aversion was going to Blacksburg. Some of the clubs on campus were the Y.W.C.A., German Club, Choral Club, and Dramatics Club. Corson's Drug Store was downtown as it is now. But to return to change. In 1914 the one dormitory was Heath House. There were six classes: Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshman, Preparatory, ond Special. The students were called The Normal Girls. The Sophomore Class consisted of 12 members. Gym suits were knee-length black bloomers with black stockings and white sailor blouses. Skirts were down to the ankles (literally). An ad by Radford State Normal School said, Free tuition given to teachers and those promising to teach. The RADNOR was not printed after 1917; the money was put into a war chest. The yearbook returned in 1925 as the BEE HIVE. Also in 1925, the school, renamed Radford State Teachers College, had a new Dean of Women, M'Ledge Moffett, M.A. It was to her that the first BEE HIVE was dedicated. Changes had come about since 1917: a new dormitory had been built, Tyler Hall; hair and skirts were shorter, an Alumnae Association was added. The GRAPURCHAT celebrated its fourth birthday in this year. In 1925, a new Professor of English was added to the faculty, Virginia 0. Hudson, Ph.D. The Radford girls were state champions in interscholastic basketball. Among others, they had competed with Harrisonburg and Formville State Teachers Colleges. Dr. Hudson became Dean of Women in 1928, while Miss Moffett was on a leove of absence. Radford had another new dormitory, Madame Russell Hall. The BEE HIVE was dedicated to the new Deon of Women in 1929 Two new teachers on campus were Dr. William S. Long, Professor of English and Dr. Minor Wine Thomas, Professor of Education. Clara Lucas Hall was the Student Activities Building. Whitt Hall was then known os McGuffey Training School. There was no yearbook between 1929 and 1938. The 1938 BEE HIVE shows an aerial view of the campus which consisted of John Preston McConnell Library, Clara Lucas Hall, Founders Hall, Tyler Hall, a new dining hall, Madame Russell Hall, and McGuffey Training School. Among the faculty that had been added since the last BEE HIVE were Miss Blanche Daniel, Mr. Benjamin Medford, Dr. Richard H. Smith, Mr. Daniel A. Cannaday, Miss Virginia Arnold, ond Miss Jean Bird (Einstein). The bloomers were gone from the gym suits and skirts were above the knees. There was more growth in 1939; the President's Home was completed and ground was broken for a new Science Hall. In 1940, Norwood Holl was completed Dedication of the annual was to Miss Blanche Daniel. The 1943 BEE HIVE was dedicated to Lieutenant Robert J. Young, on leave of absence for military service. Also on leave was Benjamin S. Medford, Corporal Irving Silverman, and Lieutenant Commander Homer Howard. This year brought in the blazer era; everyone wore a blazer. On June 25, 1944, Radford State Teachers College became Radford College, Women's Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The BEE HIVE was dedicated to Miss Virginia Arnold in 1945 and to Dr. Minor Wine Thomas in 1947. Ingles Hall was completed in 1950. Skirts were back down to the ankles and nobody wore a blazer. The 1953 BEE HIVE shows the dining hall with square tables seating two on a side. Coca-Colas were six cents. The band, called The Highland Lassies, received uniforms in 1954. Ground breaking for Pocahontas Hall was in 1955 and Bolling Hall was completed in 1958. And so we come back to where we started—the present. We have seen Radford grow from a one-building school to a college campus. We have seen the student body increase tenfold. We have seen hemlines go up, down, and up again. We have seen the history of Radford College through the eyes of those who made it—the students. Summer—Tyler Hall Spring—The President's Home Autumn—The Quadrangle New for 1960-61—The Administration Building . . . its foyer . . . its fountain DEDICATED TO... In conference with Dr. Hunt A short, stocky man, carrying his books aloft, whistles his way through the halls of Founders to class. He has just left a desk neatly arranged with books, maps of Virginia, and English History test papers. This man is indeed a familiar figure on the Radford campus. His accomplishments and activities during his career here have been many and varied. He is a history scholar... an authority on the history of Virginia and Radford and a member of the Virginio Government and History Textbook Commission ... an author ... a contributor to various magazines of locol and state interest . . . a church worker, gardener, antique collector, ond confirmed bachelor. The Senior Class and the staff of the BEE HIVE respectively dedicate this 1961 yearbook to Mr. Daniel A. Cannaday. In Closs At his desk Daniel A. Harvey. Monroe, and Grover. Now these weren’t just ordinary leprechauns. These weren't Irish as are most leprechauns. People had tried to figure out what nationality they were, but whenever they tried, they disappeared. So they had long since given up. And we will too. Now this castle in which they lived had been condemned by the City Health Department. So it looked very much as if Harvey, Monroe, and Grover were going to lose their home. This just would not do. After all, this castle had been in their family since before they were born—or however leprechauns come into the world (and this was 562 years ago.) One day when Harvey. Monroe, and Grover were fixing breakfast, which consisted of one egg between them, a thimbleful of coffee (their mother didn't use to let them have coffee but when they reached 143, she decided they were old enough) and three cornflakes each to munch on, they were talking about their situation. This was not unusual; they had talked about nothing else for the past two weeks. But this day was different; today they were going to do something. Grover said they should go down and try to reason with the Health Commissioner. Harvey said that it would do no good and that they should try to fix up the castle. But Monroe said it would be too much work. Grover agreed and he. being the most persuasive of the three, decided they would go down to City Hall and see the Health Commissioner. So right then they got dressed, left the dirty thimbles in the sink (Harvey didn’t like this but he was out-numbered) and hopped into their little Volkswagen and drove down to City Hall. The leprechauns next door had a Thunderbird and Harvey, Monroe, and Grover really wanted one, but the leprechauns next door lived in one of those new-fangled ranch houses and they would rather settle for a Volkswagon and have their castle than to have to liv' in a ranch house. When they got to City Hall, they got out, squared their shoulders, straightened themselves to their full three-inch height, and marched into the Health Commissioner’s office. Grover had been elected to do the talking, so he asked to see the Commissioner and when the secretary told them to go in, he led the way. Since he couldn’t quite see from the floor, he hopped up on a chair, put on his gruffest voice and prepared to speak. Then his mouth fell open and I’m sure if his teeth hadn’t been his, he would have dropped them. He jumped down and ran over to Harvey and Monroe and told them that the Health Commissioner was a lady! Thev said they didn’t see what he was so shocked about and this time they got up on the chair with Grover and found out why Grover was shocked. She was the homliest looking human they had ever seen. She was very tall, had straight black hair, wore black rimmed glasses that were perfectly round, had an enormous nose that gave the impression that she was the target for a horseshoe game, and was built exactly like one of the columns on the colonial mansion down the street from the castle. Grover spoke first and asked if they could keep their castle. She said, no! It couldn’t possibly be done and they had better be out, out, out of the castle in two weeks. The “no” blew them off the chair and they were so frightened that they ran all the way home, which was very inconvenient because Monroe had to ride the bus back later tc get the car. While they were washing the thimbles they were trying to think up another idea. The gong sounded and when they lowered the drawbridge, a handsome young man rode up and asked for a drink of water. They invited him to stay to dinner since he had been traveling so long. While they were eating (they gave him an extra large thimble since he was regular sized), he told them that he was the son of the king of the neighboring country and that he was leaving home because his father wouldn’t let him have the keys to tho horse on Saturday nights. And they told him their problem about the castle and Health Commissioner and everything. The prince said that he thought they should fix up the castle. Harvey said I told you so, and Grover said it couldn’t be done. But John said that he used to be an architect before he was a prince and that he would help them. At this, •larvey, Monroe and Grover, joined hands and skipped around John, in typical leprechaun fashion. So they worked and worked and worked, trying to beat the two-week deadline. They hammered and sawed and painted and cleaned until you never would have known the castle. Two weeks later, when the workmen came to tear down the castle they were so shocked that they went back and told the Health Commissioner who became so angry at losing a castle to tear down that she came out to the castle. Now the leprechauns had been noticing how lonely John was and they wanted to help him. Monroe said why not change the Health Commissioner into a pretty lauy and bring the two together and let nature take its course. Harvey said it was a ridiculous idea but Grover liked it and again Grover won his way. So they ran out to catch her before she got all the way in and spoke the magic words, Skeeter-reeter-zoo, and instantly she was changed into the prettiest lady you ever saw. Monroe ran ahead and turned on the stereo and played their newest album, “Music To Catch A Prince By” and while Harvey led her into the living room, Grover brought John in and the leprechauns left. Of course, both of them knew what they were up to but they agreed to play along. But the first thing they knew, they weren’t playing along; they had completely forgotten Harvey, Monroe, and Grover. It was love at first sight. They were married and lived happily ever after. They came to live in the castle and so you will find them now. A happier five (er) eight people you never saw. with Harvey doing the house work, Monroe baby-sitting, and Grover— well, Grover is as always the supervisor and instigator of everything that goes on. —Sandra Baker SEVEN MINUS FIVE 2 CARNIVAL I always did like the carnival at night .... so gay and lighthearted .... the sawdust under my feet feels soft and springy and it smells—he liked the smell of it____every time we came he would say, “Just smell that sawdust—that’s a good clean smell, but it doesn’t smell as good as you do .... and—but I wasn’t going to think of that was I?” The same crazy side shows. All the people, milling, pushing through the small walkways between and around the booths .... like a sluggish, syrupy stream flowing slowly around rocks in its bed. I’m caught in the middle current now—slow, but still a current There’s the one we used to like the most—the ancient torture exhibition. Listen to those screams! The way people are pouring in, you would think they thought there were real victims being tortured in there ------ well, that’s what we thought the first time—wouldn’t anyone? It doesn’t sound like a recording .... we used to laugh about .... oh, well .... The stream has thinned out now .... it always did around here .... nothing big, just the dime-and-nickel games ........ pull-the-string-win-a- a-prize, the usual “rigged” end of tht carnival. Everyone stays down by the girls and freaks and torture chambers .... There was always a crowd of fortune tellers here .... each one trying to get to the unsuspecting passer-by before the next competitor could get him. We laughed about that—if they all had the same thing to tell you, how could one be better than the other? For one to call the others no-good would be to call himself the same .... but they never realized that .... he never would have his fortune told, never could even get him to let me --------- said it was only for the weak, the emotion- al .... he never did like weakness .... or emotion .... perhaps that was it—the reason why he suddenly didn’t care .... he never really explained, it just happened ------ he loved me, then all at once—he didn’t .... March 8, 1961 The January sun is still behind the horizon somewhere and here I am, awake, because of that alarm clock. Here 1 am again—ready to begin another college day. More than likely it will be like all the rest— perhaps a few bad moments in class (I should have finished that lit assignment—it was simply too long— you’d think that a professor would realize you have other classes besides his), but probably even lit class will be okay. Even a reformed idealist shouldn’t dread a new day. 1 guess its a good thing that I like to daydream, or else traveling to school each day would he a bother instead of an opportunity. Funny thing about the others—well, 1 suppose I’d better get up. Today’s like yesterday, and the day before and the day before that. There’s Mom again, yelling as if the banging of pans couldn’t wake me. Now to eat breakfast, hear the weather report from Dad (at least he's right once in a while), dress—I hope the blue sweater is clean—get my hooks together, and be in town in rorty-five minutes! This is how my mind returned to consciousness that morning. The day was just like the other January days had been. I ate my way through the weather report, put on the blue sweater (which I had remembered to wash), patted my way through the menagerie of dogs and cat which grudgingly moved away from the doorway where they had spent the night, and approached the car. I opened the car door. This was an admirable accomplishment since it involved stacking the mountain of texts, which I had carried from the house, on the fender, opening the door, grabbing the books, and closing the door before the cat jumped onto the front seat. I succeeded. When this was done, I sat in the tomb-cold car until the engine was warmed-up enough to turn the heater on. The second time Dad had told me to warm up the car before leaving he had used a firmer tone of voice. I warmed up the car. I was always impatient and I soon decided that the car was ready to go—at least as ready as I was. As a country” girl, who had to travel seven miles into town in order to meet my fellow riders, the daily trip was still a new experience in darkness and cold, a mixture of pain and pleasure, even though I had been living in our new home for almost a year. At first I had hated the darkness and its fifteen minute solitary drive, but, even then, time was beginning to dull each day's appre-hension (you can get used to anything). After pulling on my driving gloves, hoping that the car wouldn’t conk out as I backed from the carport, I glanced at the door to make sure that Mom didn't have any errands to be run before I returned that afternoon; she wasn’t at the door. Slowly I backed from the carport. After turning in the drive, I drove along the length of it until it brought me to the secondary road which wound toward the main highway. 1 remember loneliness settling into my head as the lights from the bay window of my house glimmered through the passing trees which lined the road. Singing. Singing didn't help since my voice, like the car, creaked and cracked with the effects of a cold winter night. I decided to review the previous day’s class lecture —“man differs from the lower animals in his capacity to think intelligently, and this allows him to adapt to changing environments, and he can form opinions about his world, and he can exercise moral judgments—”. Falling snow pelted the windshield, melted as it struck the glass, and slid in tears down the curved surface. There he was again. I had seen him each morning—a lone man silently moving along through the snow which had drifted along the roadside. Still clad in the same blackened coveralls, his face masked with grime, he carried the same three knives and the pail which he had carried each day of the previous week. That day, as in the other days, he recognized me in the same slow manner—it was as if he waited for me in the cold each day—in the darkness. As I approached him, he slowly raised his head, his eyes shining in the morning blackness, he paused in his travel, and silently nodded. This was all— and yet, as I watched him follow me with his vacant gaze—through the rear-view mirror—I felt the return of a quiet terror which I had first noticed on the day of our first meeting. It returned each day with the clarity and disturbing impact which it had possessed then. Having learned his destination (a small, dilapidated farmhouse which faced the secondary road at the juncture where it entered the highway) had not lessened this torror. The shortness of the drive to the main highway, which meant nn end to the jouncing which was part of country life on country roads, was now a thing to dread instead of a blessing. The first startled vision of the waxy bodies gently swaying from the poles to which they had been strung had sickened me. 1 had tried to control my revulsion by thinking of the very practical reason for their hanging there—swinging so slowly, so silently at dawn. Behind the poles, mists—rising from the creek below— silently wafted toward the yellow-white, ponderous, horrihly-dead from which the misty heat of life escaped in vain pursuit of outcast spirits. All were mingled there, becoming one, a wedding of spirits—mists clouding my mind with a strange, new terror. During the course of the week the scene at the farmhouse hnd become familiar and grew more familiar with each passing day. 1 saw the assembled men (fellow-workers of my companion of the road) carefully lift the bodies of the dead from the vat in which they had been immersed in boiling water. This, I hud been told, made the scraping of the body easier, less time consuming, more sanitary. With the passing days they became more beautiful when shorn of their skin, their muscles bulging against the cellophane-like tissue which held the whole together. The mind con find beauty in sights which, to the untrained eye, are cruel and grotesque. They must only be viewed often by one capable of adapting himself to scenes which at first shock and disturb him. It happened this way for me, the daily visit with death in the form of gently swaying bodies lost its power to shock and repel me. Soon I could concentrate on the setting, on the farm itself. There was a shed, black with time —for this had been a long practiced art — and vats, dented and misshapen — unlike the bodies which had SEVEN MINUS FIVE 4 grown more beautiful when robbeu of their natural forms. Entrails lay in steaming piles about the slaughter scene, glistening in the winter dawn, tempting the scavengers which would have scattered them by the time that I returned each evening senseless, unfeeling scavengers that could not love the marble sheen of those scraps of life because they knew only the daily tasks of utility. There were heads, neatly severed from the disemboweled trunks, legs, taken from the bodies and neatly stacked — like firewood — in a place reserved for them. Hearts were carefully removed they lay in piles, as did the lesser organs, steaming in the morning cold — their rising mists, alone, testifying that they had once been living, pulsing parts of the bodies which no longer needed them. The mists rose from their several origins, were gathered by the wind, and drifted to the poles above which they lingered — evicted spirits mourning the mutilated homes which hung below. Since that first week, the dread of that scene has become a memory grown smooth with time. Now it is the precision of the task which clutches at my brain. As the days of the semester pass, the daily visitations to the small farmhouse slip by accompanied less and less by apprehension. I feel my kinship with the traveler as I pass him on the road each morning. His work is a part of me now—I covet his skill—realizing at last that it requires no justification. We arc kindred spirits. Like the mists, we have formed a partnership. The family and the farm possess a fascinating character. The house with its rambling disjointed construction covers the ground upon which it stands—a greedy parasite, exultant over having caused the creek to be re-routed in its favor. The slow, ponderous creek, filled with debris in all seasons, treacherous in spring, gorges itself on soil sucked from surrounding hills. Coarse, wiry grass bristles up from the soil ready to defend its small growing area at any moment. Sapping the strength of its soil with its voraciousness, it never expends energy in seeking unused soil. The fields and yard, in which the family and the livestock live, are muddy morasses, littered and foul-smelling, forcing their filth into all who root in them. The family members are ragged, emaciated, sly. Neighbors carefully guard their children from association with this family — fearful that then- children, too, will return squealing and mud-colored at day’s end. I can imagine the children in this family introduced to their father’s skill. They will lose their childish squeamishness for the work as they become proficient in the precision which lends beauty to it. The art will be preserved. Today as I pass the farmhouse 1 follow with interest my neighbors’ work, making daily tabulations of the yields which I compare with the precceding day's production. My skill in tallying the bodies has increased so that now I have to slow down only a little as I pass by. When, as warm weather approaches, their work is abandoned for a time I shall miss it. I nod to my fellow traveler as I pass him in the snowy dawn. He knows that now I also feel a part in his pre-dawn artistry. The house has become a landmark on the journey home each evening. Although I haven’t noticed them for a long while, I suspect the mists still hover—about the poles—above the bodies as they once did on winter dawns, when, everything was cold and darkness. —Carol Virginia Hill THE STONE BENCH The stone bench is cold And so is the wet earth You lean against the rough bark And feel the spring wind Lapping against your legs Like mist against a seawall It plays with your unbound hair And bears on its wings the gift of night Darkening the page you write on The last dead leaves of winter Tremble like wraiths And above in the pink-blue sky A pale moon shimmers in snowy glory —Mary Jane Nealon SEVEN MINUS FIVE 5 THREADS OF A PASSING DIMENSION Dull gray twilight creeps over the horizon, Blending black with gray into shape and recognition.
