I In presenting the personnel of our Senior Class and of their associate classes the editorial staff can pay no greater tribute than to remind the reader that, in- cluded in the student body, enriched as it is by growing numbers from other States and foreign countries, are many Whose forebears bore the brunt of battle at Point Pleasant and King's Mountain, and that the same spirit that wrested the country from the wilderness and gave it independence then is ,making its steady contribution to the growth of the Commonwealth now. Nor is it beside the point, we feel, in view of the panic for control of atomic power facing the world today, to wish them here an abiding and kindred courage and intelligence to help them guide the country wisely through the problems of the future. As anlearnest of the mettle of our people we still can hear the Resolutions for Liberty proclaimed by the freeholders of the old Southwest on the eve of the Revolution: GEriTLEMEN: 'We are ready and willing to contribute all in our power forfthe support of his Majesty's government, if applied to constitutionally, and when the grants arel made by our own Representatives, but cannot think of submitting our liberty or lproperty to the power of a venal British Parliament, or to the will of a corrupt ministry. We by no means desire to shake off our duty to our lawful sovereign ,. . . but if no pacifick measures shall be proposed or adopted by Great Britain, and our enemies will attempt to dragoon us out of those inestimable privileges, which We are entitled to as subjects, and reduce us to a state of slavery, we declare that we are resolutely and deliberately determined never to surrender them to any power on earth but at the expense of our lives. These are our real though unpolished sentiments of liberty and loyalty, and in them we are resolved to live and die. ' From the Fincastle Resolutions, drafted at the seat of Fincastle County in the present Wythe, January zo, I775, and addressed to the Virginia delegates to the Continental Congress, antedating by a year and a half the immortal Declaration of Jefferson. l l
