X. - , . '-4 V , - . X, ' . ,sf N. S-f...-.... Y -...,4Yff' To one of the most dynamic members of our faculty we, the BEEHIVE Staff of 1947, dedicate our yearbook. His unfailing generosity in giving of his time, his vast understanding of the problems of this present era, his interest and farsightedness in the mental hygiene pro- gram and the valuable knowledge and awareness thereof which he has instilled in his students as future edu- cators, these are but a few of the contributions of this vigorous personality. Therefore, We seek to honor him and at the same time pay tribute to the principles which are so much a part of him by the dedication of the 1947 BEEHIVE to A DR. MINOR WINE THOMAS In presenting to our seven hundred students and their friends this the 1947 edition of the Radford BEE HIVE the editorial staff wishes the book to serve as a tribute to that great section of the Commonwealth in which the College stands and from which it sheds its wholesome influence, namely, Southwest Virginia. And so, from place to place throughout these pages, the reader will be pleased, we trust, by our choice of scenes presented, and of historical passages quoted, to illustrate the courageous development of this our own uniquely beautiful, thriving, and beloved section of the Old Dominion. I TO THE VIRGINIAN VOYAGE You brave heroic minds, VVorthy your country's name ' ' Q That honor still pursueg Go and subdue! Whilst loitering hinds Lurk here at home with shame. Your course securely steer, West-and-by-south forth keep! Rocks lee shores nor shoals, VVhen,Eolus scoviils, You need not fear, So absolute the deep. And cheerfully at sea, l Success you still entice, To get the pearl and goldg And ours to hold, Virginia, Earth's only Paradise. Where Nature hath in store Fowl, venison, and fishg And the fruitful'st soil W'ithout our toil, . Three harvests more And the ambitious vine Crowns with his purple mass The cedar reaching high To kiss the sky, ' The cypress, pine, , And useful sassafras. Wlien as the luscious smell Of that delicious land, Above the seas that Hows, The clear wind throws Your hearts to swell, Approaching the dear strand, In kenning of the shore Thanks to God lirst given! O you, the happiest men, Be frolic then! Let cannon roar, Frightening the wide heaven! And in regions far, Such heroes bring ye forth As those from whom we ca And plant our name Under that star Not known unto our North. me! All greater than your wish. I ENTRAINING FOR BLACKSBURG ADMINISTRATION BUILDING In presenting the administrative staif of the College, we would remind the reader that under the present capable administration the institution has grown from a student body of four hundred to one of seven hundred, that it continues yearly to expand, and that since its consolidation with Virginia Polytechnic Institute, state appropriations have provided for the acquisition of additional land and the con- struction of added facilities that will insure the steady continuance of that progress already realized. And now, to continue the historical theme of our book, we would further remind the reader that the College was founded in IQUIO by the good State of Virginia, and on historic ground 5 for Radford lies in old Montgomery, in that area first explored by stout hearts from Fort Henry, now Petersburg, in the memorable year 1671, New River, between the sister campuses of Radford and Blacksburg, being the first ofthe western waters discovered by the Eng1ish,and the Narrows, in Giles, being the site where formal claim was first laid to the Mis- sissippi Valley in the King's name. 1 1 I 1 I F l l l' 43 l l ' 1 l l l l l l 1 l 1 l . Moreover, his painstaking workin keeping our rec- ords, solving our problems in order that we might graduate, and taking a sincere interest in our future plans, will forever hold him in our admira- tion for his work in our behalf. PENNY MELLOTT Prerident Student Body BEE HI Student Government We are Building not for Fame, but for Characterf, it being the basic principle for full and successful living. Student Government, by emphasizing the building of character through both individual and group participation, seeks to inspire each student to make her life a success as well as to help others. The Student Council, believing that wholesome recreation is a part of the foundation for good character, has inaugurated, this year, as a special project, a recreation room in the Forum which is open to girls and their dates on Saturday nights. At the beginning ol the winter quarter, Elma Stanley, retiring president, presided over the installation of the incom- ing officers of the Student Body. They are Penny Mellott, president, Freida Simms, vice president, and Ruby Ramsey, secretary-treasurer. Each class elects representatives to serve with those otlicers on the Student Executive Council. Seniors who have served this year are Anna Belle Tilson, Fred Stone, and Paul- ine Anclersong Juniors are Jennie Frazell, Annie B. Edmond- son, and Rowena Albert, Sophomores are Alma Rector, Miriam Dorman, and Mary Graham Engleman, and Freshmen are Carol Baber, Jeanne Maynard, and Oneta Stanley. The presidents elected to serve as representatives from Norwood, Tyler and lilladame Russell Dormitories are, respectively: Louise Thompson, Marjorie Givens, and Phyllis Campbell. The president of the Honor Council, Edna Loftus, also serves as a member of the Student Council. 161 FORTY-SEVE Faculty VIRGINIA ARNOLD, B. S., NI. A. Bwinecf Education I In presenting the personnel of our Senior Class and of their associate classes the editorial staff can pay no greater tribute than to remind the reader that, in- cluded in the student body, enriched as it is by growing numbers from other States and foreign countries, are many Whose forebears bore the brunt of battle at Point Pleasant and King's Mountain, and that the same spirit that wrested the country from the wilderness and gave it independence then is ,making its steady contribution to the growth of the Commonwealth now. Nor is it beside the point, we feel, in view of the panic for control of atomic power facing the world today, to wish them here an abiding and kindred courage and intelligence to help them guide the country wisely through the problems of the future. As anlearnest of the mettle of our people we still can hear the Resolutions for Liberty proclaimed by the freeholders of the old Southwest on the eve of the Revolution: GEriTLEMEN: 'We are ready and willing to contribute all in our power forfthe support of his Majesty's government, if applied to constitutionally, and when the grants arel made by our own Representatives, but cannot think of submitting our liberty or lproperty to the power of a venal British Parliament, or to the will of a corrupt ministry. We by no means desire to shake off our duty to our lawful sovereign ,. . . but if no pacifick measures shall be proposed or adopted by Great Britain, and our enemies will attempt to dragoon us out of those inestimable privileges, which We are entitled to as subjects, and reduce us to a state of slavery, we declare that we are resolutely and deliberately determined never to surrender them to any power on earth but at the expense of our lives. These are our real though unpolished sentiments of liberty and loyalty, and in them we are resolved to live and die. ' From the Fincastle Resolutions, drafted at the seat of Fincastle County in the present Wythe, January zo, I775, and addressed to the Virginia delegates to the Continental Congress, antedating by a year and a half the immortal Declaration of Jefferson. l l CLASS S N w River Looking West toward Wythe SNOW SCENE-NORWOOD HALL fx y X QJXJQKW 2 Q fly ' -6. It is with reverence that we review the countless memories indelibly imprinted upon our minds-memories that will not depart in a day, or a year, or forever. Conscious of the limitations of our own contributions, we shall re- member the college for longer than it can remember us. We have been known as the war babies, a small class from first to last. Consequently, it has been im- perative for each member to show more than the usual devotion and loyalty. Many of our lives, too, were darkened by the horrors of war, but our burdens, we know, were light compared with those of friends in active service. Our senior year has been filled with eager anticipations and happy fulhllments, but now the fact of no longer greeting each other from day to day becomes a reality. Wvhen tomorrow comes, we can begin anew in life, re- membering the good that we have received from our Alma Mater. As we look back over college days we remember the protection, the guidance, the patience, the friendship, the love and joy that have been oursg and we acknowledge with sincere gratitude our debt to unselhsh parents, deserving teachers, and efficient directors of administration. In humble devotion we bow our heads for what this institution now is and for what it promises in the future. With tears in our eyes and a pain in our hearts we bid it our fond farewell. sENloRs l VIRGINIA IRENE ADAMS CC 77 APPALACHIA, VIRGINIA High School-Appalachia, Virginia B. Sponror As probably the most glorious year of our college career draws to a close, our many experiences are brought back to us in sentimental review. The good and the bad have all been aggregated into a perfect entity-our Junior Class. i. Yes, we have made mistakes, but if we had not made these mistakes we could never have profited by the lessons they brought to us. And we have had differences among ourselves, but we have emerged from these differences a stronger and wiser group. It is a strangely human characteristic to remember only the best and happiest experiences when reminiscing, and to promptly forget all the moments of discouragement and even defeatg so to us, our Junior year has been perfect, the richest and fullest year of our college career. Now we stand on the threshold of our Senior year and survey our goals so near at hand. We look forward with highest expectations to the fulfillment of these goals. But we also look back, we remember ourselves as bewildered Freshmen, and as self-suflicient Sophomores. From the well of experience in each previous year, we draw those moments of supreme happiness which come to all of us, and lay each one away in the hidden chambers of our memory, to bring out again some day in the future, to remember and marvel at anew. Yes, to us our Junior year has really been the best, for we have not only the memories of our past experiences, but we have our hopes and dreams for the future. Our experiences have been many and varied and will make de- lightful memory food for the future. Our class, as usual, had its share of responsibility, for it is from this class that the candidates for Student Government officers are elected, and also from this group, Junior Counsellors are chosen to act as Big Sisters to the Freshmen. With all these things in mind, we bid farewell to our Junior year, and look forward with enthusiasm to the time when we shall take our place as Seniors on the campus of Radford College. At that time we had been rather bewildered, not knowing exactly where to goior to whom we could turn. For many of us that was the first time we had found ourselves in an entirely new environrnentg and we were wonder- ing just how we could find our own place in college. This year we were greeted with an overwhelming sense of familiarity. It was wonderful to see our beautiful campus again, to greet friends whom we had not seen for three months and to see our professors again. Oh, yes, there were some changes, but they were nice ones. For instance, it really seemed strange to walk into our dormitory rooms and see the double-decker beds. Although we were doubtful at first, this arrangement proved to be quite satisfactory.. It was not only fun but also good training in learning to live and cooperate with others. , i We were delighted to have Miss Babe Warren for our class sponsor' again this year. The Weeks flew by, and before we knew it, it was almost time to say good-bye again. This was sad because we knew some of our friends would not be back with us again next year. However, we shall always cherish the memories of our associ- ations with all the girls of Radford College in all her beauty. The momentous occasions which we all enjoyed during Freshman Week made us feel at home on the campus. ' 'We shall never forget our tours, parties in the dorm, teas, banquets, and the Freshman dance. Our long, rugged highway was made easier by faculty members and ourjunior Counsel- ors. Their friendly and helpful guidance brought us closer to our college environment. Being the largest Freshman Class in many years made us feel the importance of our organization. . Many Freshmen were honored by invitations to the V. P. I. formal dances. 'These were among the top-ranking events that filled the special pages of our diaries. At the close of this eventful year as Freshmen, we are anticipating another just as great when we become Sophomores at Radford College. BEE HIVE Q . Capturing a rich prize laden with silk, he put back to Virginia, hoping to deliver one choice part of the cargo to the girl he left behind. Overtaken by the British before malding port, Floyd, prize, and all, were delivered to England, whence, later released, he made his way to the friendly quarters of Franklin in Paris, secured a pair of jeweled slippers for the girl back home, a scarlet wedding coat for himself! and arrived at Drapers Meadows just in time to thwart parental plans for bestowing the daughter's hand on a less adventurous knight. Upon marrying, John Floyd and Jane Buchanan moved to the Kentucky frontier, where, after founding the city of Louisville, the famous fighter, brilliant target in his scarlet coat, finally fell victim to an Indian ambush. But John Floyd left a son, another John, to return to old Montgomery to become one of her most distinguished citizens and governor of the state. 3. German Club pirates were seen capturing campus princesses for a pirate celebration in the S. A. B. Treasure, loot and mutineers awaited their arrival in this secluded hideout. Then came November and with it our Neptune Ball. David jones nodded approval as King Neptune reigned over a coral kingdom of shimmering merrnaids, silver fish, and sealand fantasy. Visions of swaying seaweed and deepsea Wonders still linger in our memories. But the year moves on and with it our thoughts to our freshman rush party. All of our favorite comic strips come to life in their absurd and amusing dress. How We gazed in astonishment at the parade of comic land personalities! Swiftly the months passed and April was here with its greatly anticipated Mardi Gras. Who could help but fondly recall its riotous, lighthearted gaiety that swirled us into bubbling moods of laughter, surprise, and merriment. This year we crowned Amelia Costess queen of our third Mardi Gras. So passed one of our happiest years not soon to be forgotten. During the year, we always look forward to our social calendar, but 'this year our Founder's Day Banquet and Dance on November Igth, at the Governor Tyler Hotel, will linger with us for many months to come. just before Christmas holidays, Santa payed a visit to our Chapter room where he distributed gifts and enjoyed coffee and doughnuts. There goes our girlish figures! l l Freshmen rushing, the most exciting time of the year, filled our days with happiness. Our rushees were entertained with our traditional Cover Girl party. As the year drew to a close, blue jeans, plaid shirts, food, food, and more food became the order of the day as we left for our cabin party on Little River. This was our last large social function. With our best wishes and lasting love, we bid our gracious sponsor, Mrs. Jean B. Einstein, and our beloved Chapter a fondqfarewell, until we meet again. Then, too, in reminiscent mood we remember those who will not be with us again next year-those who have worked and contributed to our well-being through the years. To them, we extend our love and wishes for great success in the world which they are about to face. n X if as I is K s sz W is .1 s 5 i-is is 'si W ...WH sg - 1 M is N my nary :M at - E W s xl is V E Z- as I is V -.f ' i : U 1.4 B me ,. m E me . is S e s E H ,- B P2 5-A hw i-igw X Q W a gixsismx Mass- H B 5 NEW H- bm :ix XFN il ' am - say. Twenty-two enthusiastic members arrived in September, and after dusting the summer cobwebs away made out the agenda for the busy year ahead. Now, at the close of that year, we hold dear to our hearts memories of- Our Founder's Day dinner, celebrating our seventh birthday and the formal tea in honor of the other sororities. Green blazers and caps marked the occasion on the campus. Fall rush season soon occupied our time as we planned an Italian Dinner Party. Christmas brought with it our much anticipated party at Momn1ie's where we enjoyed spreading the holiday spirit by filling our coal scuttle to the brim with our contributions to buy a ton of coal for a needy aged couple. The hflarch of Dimes kept us busy, collecting at the theatres and canvassing the dormitories. Another rush season and a huge group of freshman rushees spent the evening at Friendship Manor Cin the Old South? Letters went out to the alumnae for the gala event of the year-our Sweetheart Ball, given in honor of our new pledges. Dancing couples and the mellow music of Bobby Lee's orchestra made the ballroom of the Governor Tyler truly enchanting. Spring-and with it the cabin party, a whole week-end of fun and frolic up at Little River. None can forget the mid- night snacks, long hikes into the woods, refreshing dips in the rapids, and close sisterhood in those chats before the fire. So, an exciting year adds its pages to Lambda history, our Seniors go on toward new horizons, and the friendship and spirit of the Lambda girls is a quality forever remembered. W MR. ROBERT YOUNG-Buxivzerr Advisor No one could be better liked on the campus than Mr. Young, for his humor and wit are characteristic of his likable personality. An understanding and patient advisor, he has added much to the peace of mind of those working with him and to the well-organized whole of the annual. Miss SARA SUE WYLIE-ATI Advisor A person with so much artistic talent herself is bound to be an inspiring advisor and so it has been. A comparative newcomer to the campus, Miss Wylie has won the admiration and respect of all who meet her. She has been sought for many activities on the campus, this, her most recent, has been enriched by her advice in choosing the cover, pictures, and numerous other features. A MR. DANIEL CANNADAY'-Edif0Tidl Advisor It is also fortunate that we have had in our work a member of the faculty so well versed in Virginia history as Mr. Cannaday. His- interest in collecting original historical data made it possible for the student body to benefit by his vast knowl- edge and have a treasure in their 1947 BEE HIVE. l1371 VIRGINIA SPRINGTIME And now, in bidding our reader goodbye, we offer the hope that for other readers in generations to come, when the campus has stretched its arms still farther toward the morning sun and a thousand students hail the present haunt of hundreds, the Howers of the old Southwest may continue to nod their springtime Welcome and the birds to pour forth their wonted music, reminding posterity that in enjoying this best of lands with all its rare advantages, they too, in turn, must hand it down, a nobler and a lovelier place to those who follow them.
