We shall ever be grateful to our dean for her Wise counsel and hearty interest as she has helped us plan for successful and happy living. Each day of our college lives has been brightened by the cheerfulness and ready service of our registrar. lVIr. Whittls many contributions to our Welfare will ever serve to remind us of the loyalty and appreciation Which We owe to those Who have given their all for our Alma Mater. ELMA STANLEY, Preridenl MoTTo: We are Building noi for Fame, butfor Chamcier Student Government is the highest and most desirable form of college government. The basic principle of self-government is character, founded on honor. In order to have a successful student government, we must have both individual and group participation and cooperation. The highest ideals of the student body as a whole are stimulated by student government, which is an inspiration to the students to make their life a success, as well as to help others. At the beginning of the winter quarter, Pauline Lester, acting president, having succeeded Beulah Goodson who graduated in December, presided over the installation of the incoming oflicers. These are Elma Stanley, president, Ruth Ann Godby, vice president, and Penny Mellot, secretary-treasurer. The representatives elected to serve on the council from the Senior, Junior, Sopho- more and Freshman classes are, respectively: Mary Ann Jones, Glenna De Bord, Mary Elizabeth Pennington, Geraldine Potter, Mava Sutphin, Mary Frances Johnston, Clara Graybeal, Lois Ann Currin, Margaret Snuffer, Evelyn Bracey, Mariam Dorman and Irma Parker. The presidents elected to serve as representatives from Norwood, Madame Russell and Tyler dormitories are, respectively: Sarah Hackworth, Sue Roberts and Rowena Albert. Nova McGrady, president of the Honor Council, also serves as a member of the Student Council. PEARL ANDREWS Librarian MARTHA VIRGINIA ARNOLD, B. S., M. A. Y , XX X X X X l Senior Qfficers At last we are Seniors, something that had seemed so far away in 1942, but is an actual reality now in 1946. 'It was a long, hard climb up the ladder for us, what with our school work and with so many of our thoughts directed to the boys overseas. WVe tried to do our share here at the College and at home for the people who were so gallantly fighting so that we and others to come might have the privilege of getting an education. Many of us lost relatives and friends, dear to our hearts, but we kept on, knowing they were still behind us. Our years at Radford have had many bright spots, which were our Freshman Banquet, our entertainment as guests of the Juniors, the wonderful formals and Satur- day night hops, the many impressive Lyceum programs, our Senior Week, and most of all meeting and making many close friends with the Students and Faculty. None of us will ever forget how much everyone has cooperated with us and made our years at Rad- ford the best ever. The true Radford spirit will live in each and every one of our hearts, and we shall always hold Radford College in the highest esteem. We truly hope that we shall always be worthy of this great institution and reflect its ideals at all times. The Senior Class has always cooperated in the finest spirit. That is one reason the officers fSue Smalley, president, Mary McGhee, vice president, Jewell Williams, secretary and treasurer, Thelma Nolan, reporter, Mary Elizabeth Pennington, Mary Ann jones and Glenna DeBord, Student Council Representativesj, have done such fine work. Our success as a class is due not only to cooperation, but also to our sponsor, Dr. Thomas, who gave us helpful guidance and a friendly smile just when we needed it most. ' Each year has brought to our class broader horizons and keener values, and now as We are about to leave our Alma Mater, we realize the high privilege of the close ties of friendship with classmates and faculty which we trust will endure. Further, we feel the responsibility and enthusiasm of those who are prepared to go forth and play a part in the brave new world which has been preserved for us. In September, we returned with high anticipation of living in Norwood, an experience which has proved to be truly delightful. One of our first projects was for each Junior to counsel seven Freshmen through- out the fall quarter. Before the Christmas holidays, we organized with Mozelle Porter as president of the class. Assisting her were Anna Belle Tilson as vice presidentg Ann Bennett as secretary, Niayine Katherine McCoy as treasurerg Mary Katherine Groom as reporter, and Mava Sutphin, Mary Johnston and Geraldine Potter as our Student Council Representatives. We were delighted to have Miss Sara Wylie as sponsor. This year has been filled with numerous pleasurable activities among which We remember the entertainment we gave the Seniors, the Freshman Banquet to which the junior counselors were invited, the dances and teas we attended, the clubs and ' organizations to which we belonged, the Lyceum numb:rs which we enjoyed, and especially our classes and pro- fessors, whom we shall never forget. Further, in reminiscent mood, we recall our Freshman year, with its anticipation, fulfillment, and the subsequent joys and clisillusionments which we as Sophomores ex- perienced. Then we studied, worked, played and demon- strated our patriotism through our activities in the War Council and in the Surgical Dressing room. Those were serious days in which we were called upon many times to bring cheer to our dear ones who on land, sea and air were helping preserve our nation. This year has been different from any other year we have spent in college. This is due in part to the epoch- making times in which we have been privileged to live. Now, as we bid farewell to our Junior year, we realize that we are on the threshold of our goal, to which we have been looking forward for three long years, when we shall be Seniors of Radford College. 11441 VIRGINIA ADAMS Appalachia, Virginia ROWENA ALBERT McCoy, Virginia EDNA ALLEY VVoodlawn, Virginia ANNE BENNETT Rocky lVIount, Virginia IDA BLANKENSHIP Max Nleaclows, Virginia ITALA BUoNoMo Caguas, Puerto Rico HELEN CARRITHERS Troy, North Carolina MINNETTA CHARLTON Christiansburg, Virginia GRETHEL CLEVINGER Grundy, Virginia KITTY COLEMAN Hilton Village, Virginia ' l45l I ' i E461 NANCY COWAN Falls Church, Virginia JUNE CREASY Cleveland, Virginia CAROL CROWGEY Wytheville, Virginia HELEN DAY Independence, Virginia ELEANOR EDGAR Falls Church, Virginia VIRGINIA F LINCHUM Riner, Virginia FRANCES GILLIAM Clintwood, Virginia RUTH ANN GODBEY Radford, Virginia SYLVIA GRANT Abingdon, Virginia MARY KATHERINE GRooM Richmond, Virginia MARY LOUISE HENLEY Coalwood, West Virginia MARY ELIZA HOWELL Norfolk, Virginia JUDY INGRAM Mullens, West Virginia BLANCI-IE IVEY Newsome, Virginia MARJORIE JACOBS South Boston, Virginia ALVA JOHNSTON Eggleston, Virginia MARY JOHNSTON Eggleston, Virginia ELIZABETH IQING Newbern, Virginia MARY MANNING Union Level, Virginia REBECCA MARTIN Leaksville, North Carolina l48 SYLVIA MARTINEZ Ponce, Puerto Rico IVIAYME KATHERINE MCCOY McCoy, Virginia RUBY MITCHELL Patterson, Virginia MARY ELIZABETH MosEi.EY Radford, Virginia JANE PAINTER Radford, Virginia EVA PHIPPS Clinchburg, Virginia ROWENA POFF Radford, Virginia Doius ANNE POLAND Covington, Virginia MOZELLE PORTER Rural Retreat, Virginia GERALDINE POTTER Appalachia, Virginia CARMEN Rios Aquadilla, Puerto Rico RENNIE SAVAGE Cape Charles, Virginia NELLIE SEGARRA Guayama, Puerto Rico MAIDEE SEGRAVES Pennington Gap, Virginia BETTY SNODGRASS Gate City, Virginia ELMA STANLEY Laurel Fork, Virginia SARA STICKLEY Rose Hill, Virginia FREDERICKA STONE Gretna, Virginia E491 i501 MAE STONE Bassett, Virginia MARIE SURRATT Fries, Virginia NIAVA SUTPHIN Willis, Virginia ALICE THORP Stovall, Virginia ANNA BELLE TILSON Chilhovvie, Virginia BETSY Ross WAID Rocky Mount, Virginia DOROTHY KATE WALL North Tazewell, Virgin LINDA YATES Tookland, Virginia VIVIAN YATES Tookland, Virginia i V . fi .wi -H' ii l E ll 1: will i girl 355111 ' - : i Sophomore Officers School days, -school days, dear old golden rule days -these old familiar lines came back to us as we crossed the campus in late September as sophomores. We missed a number of the old faces of last year, but were delighted to greet many new members. Each building, each familiar face, and each greeting brought back memories of a full and happy freshman year-our first college dates, formals and, of course, the dormitory parties. The class soon chose as its leaders: Penny Mellott, president, Evelyn Wilson, vice president, Freda Simms, secretarygtreasurerg Clara Graybeal, Margaret Snuffer, Lois Ann Currin, Student Council representativesg Virginia Wall, reporter, and as class advisor, the sophomores were proud to select Mr. Cannaday. This year has been full of study, work and fun, all of which we have enjoyed extremely. But as all good things must come to an end, now as our sophomore year terminates, we'll say good-bye to those who are leaving, while at the same time we'll say, See you in Norwood, to those who will return next year to continue life at Radford. f 52 l GENEVA ADKINS MALINDA BAILEY ADA BALES NINA IQATE BLAIR ALMA BLEDSOE NADINE BLEVINS FLO ANN BOND MABEL BOWEN BETTY BOYD MARY IQATHERINE BUCHANAN DAISY BURKE BETTY CARDEN EDITH CARPER DOROTHY CARTER SELMA CARTER TRULA CARTER NIARGUERITA CHITWOOD VIRGINIA CONNER MARILEE CORNETTE E541 Jo ANN COUNTS MARY JANE CUNNINGHAM LoIs ANN CURRIN WILMA DAMERON MARY EDITH DANIEL MILDRED JANE DEWESE JEAN DRAPER BETSY DUNN ANNIE EDMONDSON MADELINE ELLEDGE VIRGINIA FANNING HAZEL FARMER OPAL FIELDS HELEN FISHER CAROLYN GIBSON EVELYN GIBSON CLARA GRAYBEAL DORIS HALE GUSTAVA HASH MURIEL HEGWOOD BETTY HEINLINE NELL HOLBROOK REBA HOLLANS MILDRED JAMES JEANNE JEssEE ELIZABETH ANN JOHNSON MARGARET ANN JONES MARY JUNE JUSTUS BERNICE PUGH KINDER MARY HELEN :KING LORAINE KINGREA ANNIE LAURA LEFTWICH VIRGINIA LESTER ANN LINDSEY SALLIE LITTRELL SUE LOCKLEAR PETIE LUNDY ALTA MARSHALL E551 E561 MARJORIE MCELROY PENNY MELLOTT MARAJAYNE MIDKIFF FRANCES MONCURE DOROTHY MARTIN MORGAN FRANCES MOSES ALMA JEAN NOLAN DELORES OUELLET ALICE PAGE CORA PARCELL JANE PORTERFIELD CHARLENE PRATER FRANCES PRICE RUTH PRICE RUBY RAMSEY JUNE RATCLIFE ANNA LOU REASOR ALICIA RENTAS BETTY RITENOUR SYBIL RITTER SUE ROBERTS MINNIE RUSSELL EMILY RYBURN NINA SAMPSON DORIS SCALES BLANCHE SCOTT BETTY ANN SEAVER UNA SHARP JUANITA SHELOR NOLA SHELOR B1RcH1E SHORTRIDGE LEATRICE SILVA FREDA SIMMS ANNA JEAN SMITH MARGARET SNUFFER ANNE SPIERS JENOESE SPRADLIN FRANCES STAFFORD E571 E581 BETSY STIFF BETTY JO STUMP DORIS TAYLOR MAGGIE THURMAN PEARL TOWE DOROTI-IY VAN VLEE'K VIRGINIA WALL LOTTY WALLERSTEIN POLLY WATTS EVELYN WEAKLEY DOROTHY WHEELER JANE WHITE LILLIAN WHITTAKER MARIE WILLIAMS EVELYN WILSON SIBIL WOODFORD MARY WORSHAM EMMA ANN YEATTS JOY YOUNG W 1 L 'Y'--1 X591 Freshmen Officers '4It's Been a Long, Long Time since that memorable first day when we struggled up the hill with our various and sundry paraphernalia. The More We Get Together became the theme of our first week in college, commonly known as Freshman Week. There were parties, tours, barbecues, and for some girls even Blues in the Night for Home, Sweet Home. I Can't Begin to Tell Youl' how classes interferred with college life, but somehow There are Such Things necessary for education. Perhaps We were not Lovely to Look At,', with our pale faces, pigtails and odd apparel, but we were typical Rats of Radford College, Woman's Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Our class, two hundred forty strong, chose as leaders: Elaine Humphrey, president, Alma Rector, vice president, Gwendolyn Ward, secretary, Shirley Meriweather, treasurer, and Phyllis Campbell, reporter. Our Student Council representatives were Evelyn Bracey, Irma Parker, and Miriam Dormang and, last but not least, our sponsor was Miss Babe Warren. The oixtstanding feature of the year was our Srnorgasbord which proved a Grand Night for Singing as well as feasting. With Spring came preparation for our May Day dances on the green. The excessive practice in tripping the light fantastic toe caused us to adopt the bed-time lullaby, I'm Getting Tired so I Can Sleep! The eventful year is over, and while Waiting for the Train to Come In, our thoughts drift back over happy days filled with pleasant Memories,', and we look forward to con- tinued Friendship,,' aswell as new friendships as sophomores. l60l NARVIE ADAMS ELIZABETH ALDERMAN FLORA LUCILLE ALLISON LUCILLE ALLMAN MARY AVIA AMBURGY NANCY ATKINS MARY ELIZABETH AUSTIN ELEANOR BATES ANNA JEAN BLANKENSHIP EULA LEE BOND PEGGY BOWLING EVELYN BRACEY DORIS ANN BRICKEY AVERY BRYANT AVA AMANDA BURDETT MARIANNA BURTON ANNE CAMPBELL DORIS CAMPBELL PHYLLIS CAMPBELL MARY LOU CARR MARY SUE CARTER MARGARET CLARK COLEEN CLEEK MARION COCHRAN NANNIE MARIE COMER EDITH MAE CONWELL JANE COPENHAVER DORIS COVEY MARJORIE COVINGTON PAULINE COX BILLIE CRESS BETTY LOU CROMER AUDREY CROTTY MARTIiA ANN CROWE CATHERINE JEAN CULB ERTSON E611 i621 ,1Q1,, LOUISE CUMBIA BETTY Jo DEEL CARMEN TERESA DELGADO DANA DIBRELL GLENNA DOLINGER MIRIAM DORMAN MARY RUTH DOUGHTERTY MARY JANE DUDLEY VIRGINIA DURHAM LOLA HOPE, EARLE LOVETA EARNEST DELLA ROSE ECHOLS M.ARY GRAHAM ENGLEMAN MARGARET EPPERSON JOAN FADDIS DARLENE FANNING NANNIE FARMER CATHERINE FARRAR MARIE FLETCHER PHYLLIS FLETCHER JUANITA VIRGINIA FOLEY LORENE FRAZIER RUTH GALLOWAY NELLIE GARIBALDI MARY GARTH VERA GIBSON MARGIE GIVENS LOUISE GLOVER JOAN GRAHAM MADGE GRAHAM FREDA GROFF MARY E. Each of the dormitories and the town girls presented a one-act play in the fall quarter. These plays are an annual event and the competition is very keen. The Winter quarter was highlighted by a one-act play given as an Assembly program. Our major triumph, however, came in the spring quarter when the entire dramatic club participated in presenting the three-act melodrama, Nine Girls. All of the plays were under the direction of Gay Earle. The Dramatic Club welcomes all students who are interested in dramatics. Develop- ment of dramatic talent is the chief purpose of the organization, of which Dr. William S. Long is sponsor. Working with Dr. Long have been the officers for the year: Ruby Ramsey, president, Nadine Blevins, vice president, Sue Locklear, secretary-treasurerg Dorothy Carter, reporterg Jeanne Jessee, make-up, Dorothy Wall, sound effects. This encourag- ing news, plus the promise of an airplane ride by Mr. Schley, started the band on an enthusiastic new year. Our first concert was November 18th, and the audience was surprised at the quality of the playing and the progress made by the beginners. Before we went home for the Christ- mas holidays, the band entertained the school with Christmas carols, Ketelbey's In a Persian Market and Mydeleton's Down Southf' These were enjoyed by everyone, especially In a Persian Market, in which the audience participated by emulating the cry of the Arab beggars. We were invited to play for Clarence, a Maroon Nlasquers' production at V. P. I. on March Sth and 9th, and at the time this account was written, we were looking forward to our really big program, the Spring Concert. The usual May Day festivities, including the May Pole Dance-traditional in America since Colonial times-and other exercises, in which about two hundred college girls participated, added to the enjoyment of the occasion. The Bee Hive Honors Professors Gilbert and Bowers The maturing of an institution is reflected in the lights and shadows of the tapestry of its history when it is brightened by the addition of new life, and is darkened when a long and brilliant thread ends. This year, 1946, marks the termination of the services of two of the distinguished faculty members of Radford College to whom the BEE HIVE is happy to pay tribute. PROFESSOR WILLIAM E. GILBERT Professor William E. Gilbert is retiring after thirty-three years as professor of history and political science at Radford College, and after fifty years of service to education in Virginia as student, teacher and administrator. Mr. Gilbert has been an active part of the College from the organization of its first faculty on June 4, 1913. Affectionately known as The Old General to the early faculty members, and as Chief of the Pokiesi' in the glorious days of the Pocahontas Literary Society, he has played a part in every movement of the initial organization and subsequent development of the College. Professor Gilbert is well known to every student and alumna of Radford College. Not only will he be kindly remembered by the plus and minus technique of his class- room teaching as he led us to delve through the intricacies of government and the musty records ofthe archives of our local communities, but he is recognized by us all as a vigorous, forceful personality, a faithful attendant upon and applauder of our student efforts, a provocative challenger of our thinking, and familiar figure in the front seat of the audi- torium as he supervised and directed assembly and lyceum programs. Professor Gilbert is identified with many of the forward movements which have brought progress and development to the entire Appalachian region. His contribution to civic life has been outstanding in the field of religion, local government, highway develop- ment, and as a forceful interpreter of public thought and opinions. He has spoken on be- half of the causes of education, better government and religious ideals in practically every community of Southwest Virginia. Many thousands unknowingly owe him a debt of appreciation for the increased opportunities and broader vision his efforts have made possible for them. We speak for them as well as for ourselves as we give tribute to him as a teacher who has faith in people and the region from which they come. PROFESSOR WILSON R. BOWERS Professor Wilson R. Bowers came to Radford College in 1919. Under his leadership the Department of Mathematics was organized to offer four years work as a major course in mathematics. All of us who have 'ggone through the hieroglyphics of algebraic formulae and have run up the shades on the differentials and integration of calculus are touched with a feeling of regret that future students of the Radford College will not have these adventures into the realms of higher mathematical deliberations under the guidance of Professor Bowers. However, under his leadership, the Mathematics Club, which he or- ganized in 1921, will carry on in a spirit of loyalty and devotion to the cause of a pure mathematics which he has exemplified and taught through these years. In a quiet dignified way Professor Bowers has emphasized his belief that mathematics is basic to all learning. From this base, however, he has shown us how to spread out into a life of leadership in church and community. Under his direction many of us have had religious instruction in the Methodist Church. Others have been stimulated to find joy in the love of the out-of-doors through his enthusiastic interest in hunting and fishing, as sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of which he is an active leader. Others have caught a vision of the service to one's community through civic groups which he has demon- strated in his faithful service to the Kiwanians both in the local chapter and as Lieutenant- Governor of the Third Division of the Capital District. The solving of the personal equation is fundamental in all human relations and in all advancement of civilization. The number of human problems increase rapidly by the addition and multiplication of human associations, but influence of a good life can be divided and extended to the nth degree through example and precept. For this example and the Working out of a formula for its solution we honor Professor Bowers. f112l Acknowledgments The members of the BEE HIVE Staff wish to express their appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Buford Goodwin, of the Goodwin Studio of Radford, to Miss Margo Kent, of the Kent Studio of Pulaski, to Mr. Gerald W. Canna- day, of the Stone Printing Company of Roanoke, to the Lynchburg Engraving Com- pany, to all the advertisers, to Miss Kent, Dr. Hudson and Mr. Young of the faculty, and to other members and to the student body of Radford College for their help and coopera- tion in making possible the publication of the 1946 BEE HIVE.
