VA 24141 540-731-3621 contents prologue 4 education 12 involvement 56 sports 102 people in the halls 136 sponsors 192 epilogue 220 2 3 Believing. A state of mind. A combination Of what we perceive And how we choose to accept it. To each person, Everything is how he believes it is. How could it be any other way? We are capable only Of being ourselves. So we can only look Through our own eyes, Thinking our own thoughts, Forming our own beliefs, As unique as our fingerprints. 4 You are a unique mixture Of the same things That make up everyone. There ' s no one just like you. But you are still of the essence Of all your brothers. There ' s a place in the world just for you And it wouldn ' t be right if you weren ' t there. People need you. And just as you need to believe Others need you to believe in them. There are beautiful thoughts Unheard Because they ' re afraid they won ' t be understood. There are brilliant creations Unseen Because no one tried to appreciate them. There are the beginning of relationships Unfelt Because no one cared. 5 Believe in what ' s right For you to believe in Before it ' s too late. There ' ll be a new world In your eyes and ears If you ' ll only open your mind. 6 I What didn ' t you do today? When you postpone living You ' re letting time rip you off. Do you think that because Time goes on, and on, and on without end That you are going to go on and on with it? Well, you ' re wrong. Dead wrong. You can only put off caring loving believing Until you run out of todays. Then you can only look backwards At a string of empty yesterdays And realize You forgot to live. 7 II Why does a blind man smile? Doesn ' t he know he ' s been cheated? Well, tell me, Which man is more blind, The one that can ' t see the outside But tries to see the inside, Or the one that can see the outside And doesn ' t care about the inside? Perhaps blindness is an opinion. A state of mind. Can you still smile in the dark? III How did you get tomorrow? Who gave it to you? Whoever it was, Right this minute Is probably selling the Brooklyn Bridge To another poor fool. Another poor fool that won ' t realize What a mistake he made Until it ' s too late, either. He blew his whole life ' s savings On something He can never own. Just like you. 8 IV No one ever found a pearl Without opening the shell. That ' s right. Today is the first day Of the rest of your life. And maybe the last. So you ' d better look now. Connie Dobbins To learn and never be filled is wisdom To teach and never be weary is love. Apples of Gold She believes in the ability and creativity of her students and continually stresses originality. She finds pleasure in the work of her students and they in turn strive to please her. You never pass her classroom and see her seated at her desk. She is always bent over the shoulder of an eager, inquiring student. She listens; she laughs; and she motivates. We share each day, We love, we play; Life is free of care. But five years go so quickly, And soon it ' s time to go. Let not your heart be troubled, or burdened down with woe. For distance and time separate many . . . But only for awhile. For even though we ' ll be so far away, Our hearts are bound as one. But do not weep for that which is past, Only remember her wish for her love to last. You see, this love was for the world she lived. A love she gave willingly and gave all she could give, Be it a smile or a helping hand. Keeping our heads high and helping us to stand. So let not a tear fall, Or let our grief show, And the world will always be, And the roses will always grow. Karen Totten Aisforann;Bisforbarbaraandbeverly;Cisforcatherine Abercrombie. Here we are in the years. As individuals we have understood and learned what it is like. But these things are not terminating, they will progress. There is an undisputed awareness, judgement, and questions forming our own beliefs. The innocence is no longer in us as children, although we are still beginners in time. Growth and awareness is never limited, we will continue. Our minds were young, then they grew. 221 . . . And this was the year we knew. We learned what it was like to lose. We waited in gas lines And anticipated where Radford ' s first streakers would strike. We lived it, loved it, cursed it, felt it, experienced it. And didn ' t we try to own it Though we knew it wasn ' t ours to own. Life belongs to life. We can but momentarily grasp What we can While we can. By living, learning, loving, caring, believing, But wasn ' t this also the year of Watergate? kidnappings? corruption? strikes? lies? How can you know what to believe in? Who to trust? How can .you give of yourself When you ' re afraid of being left vulnerable? Start at the beginning. At home. The only place you can begin. Start from the inside . . .
