HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1961 As eighth graders, we got right into the swing of things by presenting an Eighth Grade Minstrel. Judging from the demand for performances, one would think we were experienced showmen. The minstrel was presented once for the student body, in two evening performances, and once at a neigh- boring school. The proceeds from our hard work went toward the purchase of a much needed scrim curtain for our stage. By the time we became Freshmen we began to distinguish ourselves among other members of the school. The joining of various clubs became a prime extra-curricu- lar activity of our class. Several of our classmates became outstanding as members of the band and as participating chorus members. Suddenly, as Sophomores, we realized the necessity of a full treasury in order to finance our future plans. Industriously we began selling candy to supplement our ex- isting finances. During this school year, the first of a succession of annual FOLLIES was presented. Again we worked hard and sold more tickets to this talent show than any other class. The income from the FOLLIES was invested in equipment for the school. We entertained the Seniors at the Prom, the big event of our Junior year. The en- chanting theme of “Bali Hai,” from the Broadway musical, SOUTH PACIFIC, was our choice for a mood-setting formal dance. Several of the members of our class were on either the football or baseball squads, both of which won DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS during our Junior year. The basketball team played in the semi- final district tournament. As Seniors we are preparing for grad- uation through our studies and activities. Early in the year we became familiar with tests — the College Boards and many others. College representatives, guidance counselors, and parents helped us to make wise college and vocational choices. Some of us attended the Virginia Model Assembly, Teen-Age Press Confer- ence, Key Club Convention, Virginia High School Forum, All-State Eand, and All-State Chorus. We guided our parents to classes at Back-to-School Night, supervised the Election Polls, and shared the responsibili- ties of government with city officials on Government Day. We took an active part in the Follies of ’60, the Christmas Pageant, the Drama Festival, and the Forensics. We were members of the R. H. S. Athletic Teams, and our hearts filled with pride when the Bobcats won eight of ten football games, turned in a fine performance in basketball, and set several track records. We are especially proud of the mem- bers of the Class of ’61 who received awards for outstanding accomplishments in music, home economics, good citizenship, scholar- ship, and leadership. We were elated when Radford received the ALL-AMERICA CITY award and sin- cerely hope the members of this class will aid in the future progress and growth of our city. In the Spring, Senior Activities began — activities in which only we, the Seniors, could participate. We decided on the num- ber of invitations we needed, chose our call- ing cards, and were measured for our white caps and gowns. We voted red and white class colors, thoroughly enjoyed every min- ute of the bewitching Prom evening, planned Senior Day and a Graduation Party, marched down the aisle for the last time as Seniors, and dedicated our Yearbook. The bountiful years will soon close, leaving only an echoing memory of our classes, activities, laughter, and parting tears. — 29 -—
