However, some gates are closed tightly and we must either have help in opening them 01' a key with which to unlock them. Throughout our years at Radford High School we have been privileged to have many who have been willing to help us push open the gates, yet we still felt the need of a key. We now feel that we have found the key -- a person whose faith in us has given us faith in ourselves, a person whose respect for us has increased our respect for others, a person who just naturally brings out the best in us. Therefore, it is with pride and humil- ity that we dedicate the 1958 Oak Leaf to a true key to the gates to success- MR. FRANK E. FLORA Principal of Radford High School --'swag AllMINIS'I'RATl0N MR. And so to continue- On March 14, we were host to the District One-Act Play Festival and the S.C.A. State Con- vention held at Radford College. Sorry. Wrong Number. our one-act play, won a superior rating. Later, the Senior Mixed Chorus received a first place rating at the District Festival in Pulaski, and the Reb Band won a good rating in the Cave Spring Festival. Ruby Young placed third in the Occupational Scrapbook Contest at the D.O. State Convention. Guy St. Clair won first place in Boys' Prose Read- ing, and Sonna Carpenter won second place in Girls' Prose Reading in the District Six Forensic Meet. The Debate Team won a distinguished rating in district competition at Blacksburg. The faculty presented a three-act comedy, Headin' for the Hills. We sponsored a bake sale. a car wash, and a dance in order to leave a gift to the school from the Class of '58. When Jerry Hutton gave the oath of office to Jerry Hopkins in the S.C.A. Installation Service. we felt that the gates were indeed opening wider. We realized that our responsibilities at Radford High School were almost at an end: we became suddenly aware that we were about to walk Through the Gates of Success to face and to ac- cept greater responsibilities. The highlight of the year was Stairway to the Stars, the Junior-Senior Prom given in our honor on May 2. Through a huge star we en- tered an evening fairyland of delight and danced to the music of the Southern Colonels under a sil- very moon and a star-studded sky, Today, with this Senior Assembly, we are opening the Gates of Success wider. We have heard some of the talent of our classmates and have dedicated our 1958 OAK LEAF to a beloved and true friend. On June 2 we will bid farewell to Radfrod High. our teachers, and our friends. We have spent five years on the hill. and in retrospect we will call these the happiest years of our lives. The gate leading to success and the world is now unlocked and opened wide. There are many paths which we may follow - only a few lead in the right direction. With the training and the knowl- edge given us by our parents and our teachers. each of us feels capable of choosing the correct path. So it is with a high heart and with great expectations that we walk proudly- THROUGH THE GATES TO SUCCESS. - Ill- Frankie Sue Young fm' E 4, ww Fa fa WW fr 1 1 ,W A LQ? Yea Q4 3 I 3- X ti 3. Radford Reb Band The band provides training for students with talent for music, develops an appreciation of music, boosts school spirit, and provides music for school and 4 community activities. This year our band donned new uniforms modeled from the Confederate uniform. Each part of the uniform symbolizes an historic event of this area, such as blue for the surrounding moun- tains and red for the Draper Valley Massacre. The RHS. Band is now known as the Radford Reb Band, a fitting name matching' the uniforms. ACTIVITIES Presented halt'-time shows at football games. U Participated in parades. The Bobcats had an added advantage this year over previous ones, because for the first time there was a specific cheering section for the students. Under the sponsorship of the Sen- ior Class, students obtained the necessary materials and roped off a Student Section, thus placing the students in one compact group. The Bobcats took the opener from Narrows. 19-7, in a real surprise game. The Radford players crumbled the Green Wave line as they got possession of the ball and kept it. The outstanding feature of this game was, oddly enough, the weather. The third and fourth quarters were played in a steady downpour. and the Cats had real trouble holding on to the ball. The Shrine Bowl pitted the Bobcats against the Indians from Blacksburg High. and the Bobcats led all the way. The Indians were scalped 25-0 to give the Bobcats their second win, The Bobcats were host to the Irish of Roanoke Catholic in the third game of the season. and again the Cats carried the ball all the way. Although the Irish tried hard. they could not get through the Bobcat line. The Irish threatened to score only once, and the Bobcats took this one. 36-0. The fourth game placed the Cats against the Dukes of Dublin's Homecoming. This was consid- ered by many to be the best game of the season. for the Bobcats fought a hard battle that night. The Dukes profited by the Bobcat fumbles and scored three times. The Cats could only score once. and Dublin had the happiest Homecoming in years, de- feating the Cats 19-7. The highlight of the Homecoming at R.H.S. was the game with the Pulaski Orioles. This was an- other time the Cats did seine hard fighting. Al- though they tried to maintain a lead, the Orioles tied the score 13-13 in thc last few minutes of the fourth quarter. The Cats traveled to Drewey Mason for the sixth game of the season. Although there were very few fans to cheer them on, the Bobcats controlled the game from the starting whistle and won 25-7. The Bulldogs of Martinsville were favored to win over the Bobcats in the seventh game of the 1957 season. The Cats threatened to score a few times. but the Bulldogs had complete control of the game from the beginning. The Bobcats did their best, but that wasn't quite enough. The final score was 18-O, Martinsville's favor. After the previous weelcs defeat, the Bobcats were unwilling to take a loss from anyone else. They attacked Pearisburg with that good old Rad- ford determination and kept control of the game from the start. The Bobcats won this game 32-0 and turned their thoughts to the final game of the season. On November 15. the Bobcats ended the 1957 football season in the annual game with Christians- burg. The Cats had to play a hard game to keep the Demons from scoring. The Cats hit pay dirt one time, and the final score was 7-0. At the close of the season. the Bobcats elected Eddie Williams and C. B. Morgan co-captains for the year. Sponsored By BIBEE'S VIRGINIA MARKETS First row: Charles Bird. Harry Bond. Jimmy Crews. Sammy Endicott. Sidney Johnson. Second row: Lyle Loving. Bunk Mannon.
