In 1776 our ancestors found it necessary to declare their independence in order to establish a nation for themselves and their posterity and to obtain freedom of speech, worship, press, and assemblage. These gallant men courageously fought to secure the rights for which all freedom- loving people strive, as a foundation for our country. Today in 1944, we, the youth of America have been challenged to the utmost to protect and preserve our heritage. With unfailing courage and unyielding determination we have set forth to diffuse freedom throughout the world by defeating the agressor nations. Among those so valiantly fighting on the battle fronts for the liberation of all people, are many from Radford. These men and boys went proudly, with not only courage and faith but the knowledge that our American way of life must be preserved for all generations, no matter what the cost. Leaving their homes and families, their jobs and security, they went forth, fully aware that they faced unbelievable hardships, disease, famine and fear. Willing to accept the risk of per- manent blindness, the probability of life-long suffering, perhaps even death in battle, they marched away . . . stalwart and determined, heroes only in the minds of those left at home awaiting their return. For these men nothing was too great a sacrifice for the freedom and liberty in which they believed. Knowing this they are humbly and gloriously fighting to preserve our American beliefs and ideals, unselfishly surrendering themselves to unknown dangers that our children may grow up in a land of peace. As our forefathers, so are they willing to give their lives for the America We have built on the basis of liberty, equality, and fraternity. To you courageous men, who are fighting for our America of tomorrow, and to whom we owe so much, we, the students of Radford High School proudly salute you! S. 1944, being in good mental condition and in much better temper than usual, do hereby write and publish this last will and testament as a memoir to the faculty and student body of R. H. S. in years to come. To the senior class to come we leave our own feeling of superiority and well-known nerve, which they will probably need next year. Also to the junior class we leave our good luckg it made us what we are today and it should satisfy them.. To the Sophomores we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the juniors. To the faculty we leave an attentive group at assembly programs. As chairman of this committee, I began to write what I heard and saw as faces and names became familiar. The following is what I recorded: Dave Wall has been promoted from rack boy in the pool hall to pin boy in the bowling alley at the Hercules Recreation Center. . . Charlie Ratcliffe and Lois Anne Currin have organized a dancing school at Dry Valley. Among their first students were Bennie Beagle, Leland Jamison and Dale Weston. . . Robert Hartsock is in Hollywood competing with Tyrone Power. . . Frances Moses is beaming proudly over her twins, Jim and Tim, who have won the Radford Baby Contest. . . . Harmon Meredith is still struggling to become a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. . . while on their nation-wide tour Ruby Young and Florence Middleton will stop at Radford High School to discuss the best pointers in debating. . . A western romance written by Georgianna Cayton is now appearing in Beagle's Blue Bugle. . . Harold Schultz and wife, the former Mary Hylton, have returned from one of their frequent trips to get supplies for the Shultz Vanity Variety Store. . . . Fats Jones and his orchestra are now featured guests at the Crawl Inn, where Gene Albert is manager. Joe Gollehon is first trumpeter and Christine Hearne is vocalist. The advertising agent is none other than Buddy Boyer. . . Sara Hicks is teaching physical education at Poor Man's Gulch. . . Bruce Stump can be located at the Radford Furniture Store. . .
