INo one is more aware of the imperfections of these contents or the inexperience of the staff than we are ourselves. We do not claim to he geniuses nor do we claim this hook to he a masterpiece, hut we give it to you to laugh over, to criticise and to cherish. If this, our edition of The Oak Leaf, shall recall our happy life in I . H. Home Economics 3n fRemortam SARAH ELIZABETH BRINKLEY Bom January 27, 1919 Died August 28, 1938 RUTH ANNE GIBSON Born February 3, 1922 Died October 13, 1937 8 THE 1939 OAK LEAF CLASS OF ' 39 VERSUS ANYTHING FIRST QUARTER, 1935-36 With the usual nervousness at the kick-oil, we pulled several boners as if we didn’t know how to play. Our team soon learned all the tricks under the guidance of the monster “Upperclassmen.” Although there is little evidence of the fact, it is said we learned a little English, His- tory, Science, and Arithmetic. SECOND QUARTER, 1936-37 Well, at least we are not the smallest catfish in the sea. The upper- classmen aren’t such monsters as they used to be and we even try to he tough (to the Freshmen). Coach Faculty is experimenting with a play called the “New Curriculum.” Also a moving picture machine with sound and all the trimmings is sent in the game to bombard our op- ponents. THIRD QUARTER, 1937-38 We go into the second half feeling very confident and a little more serious about the whole game. It is recognized that the team has on it a few stars when they are elected as officers and begin to compete more in athletic and literary contests. Then a blow is dealt when we arise one Sunday morning and dress in half our Sunday best to see the gym- nasium and auditorium destroyed. This fire was not as disastrous as it may sound for out of the ruins a bigger and more beautiful audi- torium has been built. But then for half the quarter the lack of these two, which are always well used, helped to keep us from the goal line. FOURTH QUARTER, 1938-39 There is only one more line to cross, hut many are not in such a hurry to cross, as they were in the beginning. They are prone to wonder what will happen when this game is over. We try to become verv dignified hut find it does not pay. With more and more responsi- bilities we realize that, which we have envied in days before. The Juniors were most gracious hosts and gave us quite a pleasant evening at the Junior-Senior Banquet. During these four quarters a great many changes have taken place. Some of them are: New superintendent. Eagle, two new Eagles, new auditorium and gymnasium, a Hock of new teachers, and a picture machine. The theme was “Rainbow.” It was carried out in an array of color- ful rainbows, large and small. One huge rainbow extended across tbe ceding, and although there was no pot of gold at the end, a bright new penny was found in the bottom of each guest’s rainbow cup of little candy mints. During the three-course dinner the guests were entertained with the O O following program : Master of Ceremonies. RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL 17 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We. the dignified members of the graduating class of Radford High School. 1939, being in good mental condition and in much better temper than usual, do hereby write and publish this last will and testament as a memoir to the faculty and the student body of R. IT. S. in years to come. To the Senior class of 1940 we bequeath our feeling of superiority and well-known nerve, which they will probably need next year. Also to the Junior class we leave our good luck; it made us what we are today and it should satisfy them. To our good friends the Sophomores we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the Juniors. To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen we leave the map of the school so that they may not get lost and wander aimlessly about the hall looking for their class rooms. To our dear old school building, we leave the wads of chewing gum and the crumpled notes and the loudly colored walls in the library and room 107. The Oak Leaf staff leaves to Mr. Adams his office, if he promises to take care of it. To the different members of the school, these Seniors do will and be- queath these things: Louise Martin — her “flirting technique” to Mary Peters (if she can handle any more). Dale Myers — his hair oil to the shop with the hope that they might be able to use it to lubricate machinery. Hilda Amonette — her ability to ask dumb questions to Chester Charlton. Marcus Long — his bass voice to Rob Roy Thomas. Julia Smith — her sunny disposition to June Hendrix. Bob Barton — his ability to grow tall to Charlie Roseberrv. Dempsey Sledd — his electrical ability to Mr. Perkins. Herbert Godbey — his curly hair to TV. F. Amonette. Eloise Hurt — her business ability to Anna Ruth Mottesheard. Ellen Cline — her long curls to Charlotte Mantz. Betty Jones — her ability to catch colds to Sylvia Sublett. Louise Simpkins — leaves a wad of chewing gum under a desk in 205 to the first who finds it. Dorothy Mae Smith — leaves the Dublin hoys to Betty Stocke.
