CLASS HISTORY In September 1955, seventy-four FRESHMEN entered Racine High SchooL According to custom, we were initiated by the sophomore class. From the first six-week honor roll, we elected the following officers: Jimmy Adams, President; Altie Stover, Vice-President; Rosemary Salser and Nadine Roush, Secretary-Treasurer; and Lois Knopp, Reporter. To meet the expenses of the freshmen initiation in 1956, we paid class dues. When we re-entered high school in 1956 as SOPHOMORES, our class had decreased to a total of sixty-six members. We elected Nadine Roush, President; Ronnie Salser, Vice-President; Shirley Mc-Kelvey, Secretary-Treasurer; and Lois Knopp, Reporter. That year we continued to pay class dues. In 1957, our JUNIOR CLASS organized with fifty-nine members. Our officers were: Rosemary Salser, President; Lois Knopp, Vice-President; Nadine Roush, Secretary-Treasurer; and FrankieChapman, Business Manager. Many projects werecarried out in order to help finance our senior trip. One of the highlights of that year was our play, “Hillbilly Weddin”. Now after a short summer’s vacation, our SENIOR year has arrived. With a class membership of forty-eight, we elected the following officers: Carol Essington, President; Nadine Roush, Vice-President; Patty Martin, Secretary; Rosemary Salser, Treasurer; Shirley McKelvey, Business Manager; and Virginia Johnson, Assistant Business Manager. To finance our trip to Washington and New York, we sold stationery, managed concessions at basketball games, and gave our play. Now, farewell to classmates and our Alma Mater. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 1958-1959 President.......................Carol Essington Vice-President.......................Nadine Roush Secretary............................Patty Martin Treasurer.......................Rosemary Salser Businss Manager.................Shirley McKelvey Assistant Business Manager. . . . Virginia Johnson 19 Columbus, Ohio May 30, 1969 Dear Virginia, With spring again 1 hear so much about graduation time and it reminds me of our graduation from high school -- dear old Racine High! Recently I wrote to Sharon Boso, who is now Racine High Secretary, and asked about some of our classmates. Since you are so far away, teaching in the University of Georgia, I thought you might be interested in hearing what our friends are now doing. Sharon shares an apartment with Mary Alice Nease, who teaches Latin at Racine, and with Donna Hilldore, who has a beauty salon. I saw Lena Neville over on the Ohio State Campus the other day, and she told me she is studying to be a doctor. Mary Cundiff is also working at Ohio State. She is Assistant Dean of Women. Our class has its sportsmen too. Harry Ours manages the famous ‘‘Hotshots’’ basketball team here in Columbus. Among the players on the team are Ronnie Salser and Don McDade. Arnold Adams also has a career in sports. He is head coach at Glenford. Last week I attended the Racine High Band Concert and, among the people I saw, was the former Rose Mary Salser. She is married now and has three of the sweetest children. Among the other “family people’’ from our class are Jim Price and the former Joann Wickline, Patty Martin Beegle, and of course Ann Sargent Rees and Barbara Adams Whitlock. You have no doubt seenJackCummins’s latest movie “Heartbreak.” Charles Gaul is his new manager. Arthur Beegle also is in Hollywood. He has his private rock-and-roll recording studio. Among other notables from our class are Charles Ihle and Jim Adams, who are now touring in Italy, dancing with the Swan Lake Theater group. Carolyn Norris, Joy Foster, Judy Shields, Linda Circle, and Sally Pearson are members of the “Rockettes.” Also in New York are Lois Knopp and Frankie Chapman, who are fashion designers for “Orhbacks. Several of our former classmates have remained in Meigs County. Among these are Martha Teaford and Aide Stover, who have a fashion center in Letart and Norman Deem and Marion Bostick, who are co-managers of the new aluminum plant there. Also, Linda Cozart and Dorothy Bush, who work in Portland for the Meigs Publishing Company. Carol Essington has made quite a name for herself. Her recent discovery of a new element has won her much praise all over the world. Wanda Faber is her business manager and Linda Michael and Leota Parsons are her laboratory technicians. While in Racine last week, I ate dinner in the Theiss Restaurant, owned by Arlene Theiss. The Rousey twins, Barbara and Bonnie, are waitresses there. Dinner music was provided by Mary Walton on the organ. While there, I bought a copy of the Racine Tribune.” In the Society Column, written by Linda Donahue, society editor, I learned that Nadine Roush and Jane Harris were home recently from their teaching positions at Vassar School for Girls. Nadine is head mistress and Jane teaches public speaking. I also learned from die paper that Roy Van Meter and Melvin Circle own and operate the Happy Go Lucky Casino in Las Vegas. As for myself, I am still working as private secretary to the Governor of Ohio. Well, Jinny, when I started I meant this to be a friendly letter; but as I finish I find it to be more of a class history of the last ten years. Sincerely Shirley McKelvey Johnson 20 Sales Manager, Shirley McKelvey, distributes stationery to Nadine Rouse, Rosemary Salser, and Carolyn Norris. Rosemary receives money from the students for individual packages of pictures. Assistant Sales Manager, Virginia Johnson, helps in the distribution to Lena Neville. Anyone want to buy some stationery. Mr. Kincaid who took our group pictures remained ever kind and patient. Ann Sargent and Mary Cundiff take their turn at selling concessions at the basketball game. Lois Ann Knopp and Marion Bostick have fun at taking their turn selling concessions. Our class sponsored a Women's Basketball game to earn money for our Senior trip. The musical experience in each grade includes listening, performance (class and public), creating and learning and die relation of these activities should lead to a satisfactory musical understanding and enjoyment if the student will take advantage of the opportunity provided. Part-singing is introduced so that a student may learn to read music and then the qualified ones can participate in Glee Club upon entering high school. Students elected to sing in the Glee Club and various vocal groups have the opportunity to sing semi-classical and classical music and to appear in concert performance before the public. Our Glee Club concert for Christmas was given December 18, 1958. It was a mixed concert with the band participating in half the performance . We wish to express our appreciation for the work Wilma Henderson did in keeping our picture records. Thanks also go to Harry Ours, a senior, who did much of our art work. By working after school and in the evenings we managed to meet our deadline without more than the expected number of headaches and delays. Special thanks go to Mr. Vinas Lee, our adviser, without whose assistance this publication would not have been possible. If we learned nothing else in producing the material for this yearbook, we all learned that it takes a lot of time, effort, and PATIENCE. We sold two hundred and six annuals at two dollars each or five hundred and twelve dollars. The annual staff netted a discount of one hundred eight dollars and twenty-six cents on the sale of school pictures. The total amount is twelve hundred and fifty dollars and twenty-six cents. iS'tatiax The librarians try to keep our two thousand five hundred books properly classified, accessioned, loaned, and mended, thus serving about two hundred-fifty borrowers --a full-time task for eighteen girls. 34 OUR DRAMATICS DEPARTMENT SPONSORS THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR PLAYS FIRST ROW: Jerry Lee, Bob Wingett, Don Weese, Patty Roush, Paula Hart, Joyce Carson, Mary Euler. '%ee The Reserve teams of the past years have maintained a considerable number of wins. Many are the hours that the boys spend in practicing, but die hard practice does pay off. All of the boys strive very hard to make themselves better players as they move up to the varsity squad. Roger Birch, Danny Cole, Don Weese, Gerald Hart, Rodger Parsons, IXiane Wolfe, Allen Graham, Jim Wickline, Dale Cole, Winn Rees. We are proud to have six seniors on our team this year. They are Arnold Adams, Jim Adams, Arthur Beegle, Charles Gaul, Don McDade, and Ronnie Salser. These boys have maintained good basketball skill in their experiences playing ball. During their years at Racine High School, they have enjoyed playing basketball very much and they think it is a great sport. Arnold Adams, Don McDade, Ronnie Salser, Jim Adams, Arthur Beegle, Charles Gaul. Our coach, Larry Morrison, works very hard to get the boys in good shape for the games. Everyone thinks that he is a great coach and has achieved much success in his career at Racine. The managers of the team are Ronnie Beegle, Alfred Toney, and Jack Cummins. They are always busy keeping records and getting the equipment ready for the night games. Managers 39 Coach A series of home games are tentatively planned with Pomeroy, Middleport, Wahama, Rutland and Chauncey. We shall compete with Rutland in the Meigs County Tournament to determine who will represent Meigs County in the Sectional Tournament. The spectators watch the Racine High School Basketball Team with amazement and respect. The ball is sent through a hoop eighteen inches in diameter. This sport requires athletes with precise judgement and quick reflexes. The players must maintain extreme stamina because it is a very fast moving game. In the past years Racine High School has produced some outstanding teams and many hope that it will continue in the years to come. On our team this year we are fortunate to have a fine group of seniors who have played ball for a number of years. Some were fortunate to play varsity ball their first year in high school. Everyone is proud of the team and also of the championship records in the Tornado history they have left the school. In the year 1957 Racine won twenty-three games and lost two. One was with Wahama in their new auditorium and the other withNelsonvilleattheend of the season. Racine won the Meigs County Tournament by defeating Eastern, Rutland, and Middleport. This entitled the team to proceed to the District Tournament at Athens. There they played two games. In the first game they defeated McArthur, but were eliminated by Nelsonville in a close and very exciting contest. In the year 1958 Racine won twenty-one games and lost three. The games they lost were Belpre, Pomeroy, and Glenford in the Sectional Tournament at Athens. Racine won the Meigs County Tournament by outs coring Eastern and Harrisonville. We hope that the teams in the years to come will be as good, if not better, than the ones that Racine has had in the past. We all wish the best of luck for the future teams at Racine. 42 Secdfo e 0, ARNOLD ADAMS 4 years Guard or Forward CHARLES GAUL 3 years Guard JIM ADAMS 4 years Center DON M C DADE 4 years Guard SAM PRICE 2 years Center BILL MCKELVEY 2 years Guard 43 ARTHUR BEEGLE 4 years Forward RONNIE SALSER 4 years Forward The cheerleaders are chosen every year by the student body.
