Beauty Ro SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In September, 1941 we began our courageous career at Racine High School, with a class of sixty-two. Adhering to the usual custom, the sophomores Initiated us and then welcomed us with the FVeshman Reception”. At the close of the first six-weeks period we elected the following officers; President, Sheridan Scarberry; Vice-President, Lois Sayre; Secretary-Treasurer, Bootle Lee. The results of the scholarship tests taken this year were: Nora Wolfe placed eighth In the district and Bootle Lee eleventh In the district in Latin 1. I placed third in the district in English IX. Beginning our second year, we found that only forty-one of the original class had returned. This time we initiated the new Froshies”; then welcomed them with the annual reception. As sophomores, some of us won recognition In the district-state scholarship tests. Nora Wolfe placed second in the district and twelfth in the state in Latin 11. Gene Roush placed fourth in the district in Geometry. Lois Sayre placed sixteenth in the district in English X; and I managed to place nineteenth in the district in English X. We were guided largely by these officers: Lois Sayre, President; Nora Wolfe, Vice-President; and Sheridan Scarberry, Secretary-Treasurer. We entered our third year determined to prove ourselves outstanding. To guide us, the following students were chosen from our small group of twenty-nine: President, Gene Roush; Vice-President, Nora Wolfe; Secretary- Treasurer, Lois Sayre; Business Manager, Randall Talbott. To start in good order, we conducted a magazine campaign and followed this with the class play Free Advice . With funds provided by those two feats, and by selling pop and potato chips, we honored the departing seniors with a prom in April. In the scholarship tests this year Gene Roush ranked eleventh in the district in American History. I ranked eighth in the district in Bookkeeping and seventeenth in the district in English XI. At the end of the year we were eagerly awaiting the time when we should be seniors. After a short vacation, we resumed our studying--as seniors I Just one or two of the former class failed to return. Others replaced them so that we still had a class of approximately the same number. Two boys, Randall Talbott and William Roush, sacrificed the last half of their senior year to join the armed forces. Their absence was acutely noticed, as only four boys were left in our class. As our leaders this year, Nora Wolfe was chosen President and Bootie Lee, Secretary-Treasurer. Early in tie fall we started plans for our Racina. By a magazine campaign, two stationery campaigns, a scrap paper drive, and a senior play, we obtained money to finance it, and the staff worked diligently to make it a success, The senior boys have been very active on the the girls have been outstanding in music, in the operetta, under the direction of basket ball teams; while Most of the senior girls appeared Mrs. Buell. Several students participated in the class play, under the direction of Mr. Weese. On March 16th of our senior year. Gene Roush ranked first in the county; fifth. In April we were honored by the Junior class live long in our memories. Then came Baccalaureate and Commencement! She purchased the grim old Hobgood House in the foothills of the Ozarks and here In the seclusion of the mountain she planned a safe retreat where the girls should not see their lovers for at least six months on penalty of being disinherited. And what a mess they got Into--ghosts and ghostly doings everywhere. Just as luck would have it they arrived on the very night that old Bluebeard Brcnson, who once committed a murder in the house, was supposed to revisit the scene of his crime. And did he come? Well, at any rate there were some strange happenings on that night. When things were at their height, the boys arrived-Just in time to rescue the family from a desperate band of crooks. Not until then did Miss Priscilla relent. Being quite definitely a ladies man, Leander also had a bad case of girlitis . He proposed to every female he came In contact with. As a result he had woijien chasing him all over the country threatening to bring breach oi promioe suits against him and, all In all, he undoubtedly was always in a disastrous situation while his friend, Richard, was always somehow talked into helping him out of it. In doing this Richard always found himself involved in trouble almost as Leander himself. Finally Leander met Hie one and only Melissa , but she seemed not to be at all impressed by his flowery speeches. In spite of this, Leander continues to pursue the unattainable Melissa who finally extricated him frou his girl dilemma. But not before Leander has succeeded of unearthing the fact that gorgeous Mile. Fifi, a French refugee, was an international spy whom the government had been seeking. Leander unconsciously became a hero in the eyes of all his ladies but Leander had eyes for only Melissa who finally accepted his mich used heart and hand.
