Class Officers: President, Doris Wagner Vice-President, Mabel Ann Coxg Secretary-Treasurer, Faye Worthington. I Senior Class I-iistory In September of 1935 we entered Racine High School as Freshmen. with a class of seventy-eight. When we met in our first class meeting, we elected Wayne Roush as our President, Eileen McKinney, Vice-Presidentg and Doris Wagner, Secretary and Treasurer. We succeeded in winning the Girls' Basketball Tournament and before long had earned the title of a very active class. After suffering many embarrassments at the hands of our upper-classmen, we took our place as Sophomores. By this time our class had decreased to sixty. Again we were successful in winning the Girls' Basketball Tournament. For our class officers we elected Dwight Ross, Presidentg Allegra Fadely, Vice--Presidentg and Charles Jividen, Secretary and Treasurer. Before we were aware of it, a year had passed, and we were Juniors, fifty- seven of us. Our class officers for this year were Allegra Fadely, Presidentg Charles Jividen, Vice-Presidentg and Doris Wagner Secretary and Treasurer. 'We were kept very busy earning money with which to honor the departing Seniors. Of course, the climax to our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom, presided over for the ,first time in R. H. S .history by a queen and her attendants. We were represented on the Varsity Basketball team by Dwight Ross, on the Reserve team by three boys, and on the Baseball team by five boys. Now we are Seniors with a class of forty-seven. How proud we are to have finally earned that name! For President we chose Doris Wagnerg for Vice- President, Mabel Ann Cox: and for Secretary and Treasurer, Faye Worthington. This year we won the Girls' Basketball Tournament. We were represented on the Varsity Basketball team by four boysg on the Baseball team by seven boys. A highlight of this year was the Senior Sweater Swing, attended by Juniors and Seniors. We were represented in the Senior Scholarship test by ten students. with Charles Jividen and Charles Ihle winning second and third places in the county. Now that we have come to the time when we must bid our friends and teachers farewell, we look back over our four high school years and come to the realization that they have been and will be the four happiest years of our lives. 1. Junior Class History In the fall of 1936, there was admitted into Racine Sutton High School, one of the largest classes ever enrolled. Not only one of the largest but also one of the Mfreshestl' of the freshie classes, we came to seek whatever knowledge there could be found. We elected as our officers, the following: President, Ruth Leeg Vice- President, Ralph Johnsong Secretary-Treasurer, Wilda Maye.s. In the spring of 1937 we had weathered the storms of criticism from our upper classmen and came out successful with a class of seventy-three. When we re-entered school in the fall of 1937 several students had fallen by the wayside, but we were glad to add to our list. two former Pomeroy students, which made a total of sixty-eight. We elected as officers the following: President. June Hayman, Vice President, Emma Jean Carmichael, and Secretary-Treasurer, Derrell Sayre. The old saying that the third time is the charmv seems to have failed in our instance, for we entered school in the fall of 1938 with only fifty-nine. We elected the following officers: President, Burl Ashley, Vice-President, June Hayman, and Secretary-Treasurer, William Holman. Those officers probably had a harder task to accomplish than those of any other year, since on them falls the responsibility of planning the Junior--Senior Banquet, the most anticipated affair of our school life so far. This brings us up to the present time, the end of our Junior year with fifty- four students. And if fate is not against us, we, the Class of 1940, hope to be the largest class ever to be graduated from our beloved high school. -Thanet Barnitz Junior Class FIRST ROW-Left to right Charles Foster, Floyd Clark. At the first meeting we elected Charles Wolfe as Presidentg Ruth Moore, Vice-Presidentg Mildred Morris, Secretary-Treasurer. As a whole, our first year was very uneventful. When we returned to resume our studies as Sophomores, we found that our class had decreased to sixty-two. Early in the year Ruth Moore was chosen as President to guide the class. Mildred Morris was elected Vice-President. and Mary Mildred Shain, Secretary- Treasurer. The crowning event of the year was the Freshman Receplion given by the Sophomores in December. Necessary funds were earned for this affair by .selling Christmas cards. We finish the term with thirty three girls and twenty-six boys. We hope to see each of these faces when we return as Juniors next year. -Ruth Moore . Sophomore Class FIRST ROW-left to right X Betty Brinker, Ruth Spencer. William Hoback. Thorne Longsworth. We were initiated by the Sophomores for three days. The class election was held soon after and the following officers were elected: President, Beryl Wolfeg Vice-President, Pauline Deckerg Secretary-Treasurer, Wilma Barnitz. During the first semester the Sophomore Class gave a party in our honor. The Freshmen in Mr. Fisher's room won the magazine contest sponsored by the school. This entitled them to a theater party at Middleport. The show, Thoroughbreds Don't Cry, was enjoyed by all. I think it has been a very successful undertaking, and I Wish to thank each and everyone of the students who have helped in any Way to make the ECHO a success. Stanley Houdashelt, Advisor TYPEWRITING ll CLASS This class in advanced type- writing was trained in speed on the machine, business cor- respondence and many forms of business and office duties. The highest speed of the year was seventy words per minute on a complete test, made by Mattie Ross. VOCATIONAL AG. DEPT. The Vocational Agricultural Department of Racine contin- ues to be one of the strongest and most popular departments for rural boys the school cur- riculum has to offer as an elec- tive. This is due, in part, to the high-type of rural boys who select their work under- standingly and expect to make farming, or some allied field of agriculture, their chosen profession. SCIENCE LABORATORY There is a Chinese proverb to the effect that one picture is worth a thousand words. Edu- cational authorities today are agreed that one actual exper- ience is worth a large number of pictures. It is in the labor- atory that the student experi- ences for himself the things which he has been taught in the classroom. Honor Students First Row-left to right: Mary M. Shain, Thanet Barnitz, Marian Simpson Gayle Wagner, Betty O'Connor, Mary Jane Watson, Wilma Barnitz. Second Row: Alberta Sayre, Ruth Carnahan, Ruth Moore. Mildred Carnahan, Christine Morris, Doris Wagner, Faye Worthington. Third Row: Beryl Wolfe, Gerald Cozart, Thorne Longsworth. The above students have been on the Honor Roll for the entire year, To attain this honor, it is necessary to maintain an average of BN or above in each subject. Others were in the select list one or more times, but due to lack of space wc find it impossible to list their names. A group of students took the every pupil test given by the State Department of Education, at Harrisonville, April 8. Offensively the Tornado held an average of 30 points per game to the op- ponents 22. Then came the County Tournament which the Tornado took Very con- vincingly making the title theirs for the eighth consecutive year. The Tornado went to Logan for the District Tournament eliminating Glouster and losing to Glenford which was winner of the tournament. Kenneth Theiss received honorable mention on the all district team and Robert Taylor re- ceived honorable mention on a theoretical all Ohio team picked by the sports writ- ers of Ohio newspapers. This is the first time a Racine player has ever been given such an honor.
