Panthers protest on Armband Day On Friday, December 7, 1979, Snider students had an opportunity to protest for American hostages being held in Iran. Students and faculty alike who wanted to protest did so by wearing white arm bands on their left arm to signify their hope for the American hostages. The students ' concern was conveyed in a dignified manner by holding a meaningful but peaceful demonstration. There was news coverage by all Fort Wayne news stations and both newspapers. The Panther pride came through again. Let ' s hear it for Hope for the Hostages! 16

U.S. Senator Richard Lugar speaks to the Senior Class on current issues On Tuesday, January 29th, Senator Richard Lugar visited Snider and spoke to Seniors at a special assembly. He also met with student council officers and Scroll and Safari staff members and then held a press conference with the media. Speaking to an attentive audience, Senator Lugar informed Seniors of his stand on various issues including the crisis in Iran and Afghanistan. After his prepared speech, the Senator opened the floor to questions. Student interest was apparent from the number of questions that were brought up. Many were centered around apprehensions of imposing a draft or registration for a draft, as well as the chances that the United States would become involved in a war within the next few years. Senator Lugar spoke frankly of the need for strong national defense and an unwavering international posture. Other students were interested in the energy crisis and gasahol as well as his views on how to curb inflation. Eventually, time ran out, and student council president Tom Teel, who had introduced Senator Lugar, closed the assembly. Following his speech and question and answer session, Senator Lugar takes time out to discuss issues that interest Seniors Steve Beaman and Dave McComb.
