The Panthers have developed this same spirit and utilize it to create Snider ' s identity. Anthony Wayne was commanded to secure the Fort Wayne area with its lucrative fur trade for the United States. He was successful, and in 1794 he built Fort Wayne. During the War of 1812 the fort withstood a month-long siege. Later the fort expanded and grew into the city we know today. The pioneers were forced to fight for their possessions. They had given up the security of the East in order to meet the challenge of the West. They faced In- dian battles and a wilderness. They met the challenges and created a growing and prosperous city. The Panthers face battles too. They must fight to perserve their identity and high standards in a wilderness of apathy. Snider was the first of the new schools. Panthers were forced to carve their identity before the critical eyes of the older schools. They have met these challenges and have therefore been able to perserve Snider ' s unique personality. On Monday students wore overalls. Tuesday was Class Competi- tion Day; seniors wore red. juniors wore white, and sophomores dressed in blue. On Wednesday teachers and students alike adopted the garb of the 50 ' s. On Thursday students brought suckers to lick. Friday was Color Day; students and teachers wore gold and black to show their support for the team. The Pep Session was a highlight of the week. Many students had spent days tearing confetti. As a result, the gym exploded with newspaper, toilet paper, and 1MB card punch-outs. Spirit overflowed as students became excited about the game. On October 3, the Panthers defeated the North Side Redskins in an exciting game. During half-time the Homecoming Court was introduced. Laura Murdoch was crowned queen. It took place during the first week of the second semester, January 26-30. Many hours of planning and preparation preceded this Student Council project. Students formulated ideas during the summer; before school ever started, a great deal of prepara- tion was already completed. When school began in the fall, the committee members presented their plans to the faculty and administra- tion. Although there were some who disliked the idea, the majority were enthusiastic enough to agree to cooperate. The teachers were then asked to plan the classes they were to teach or sponsor. Some students taught classes in the areas of their experience; in other classes, guest speakers were in- vited to talk. Finally, the long planned for and awaited for week arrived. Students were allowed the opportunity to learn about their personal interest areas. There were many reactions to Independence Week. Although some aspects could have been improved, basically it was a well-planned and profitable week. With a lot of work and a desire to continue the school ' s fine tradition in this sport, the team complied a fine dual meet record of 18 wins and 4 losses. They were many days when two practices were necessary to build the en- durance and strength to run a good 2 ' a mile race. Junior Chuck Thomas paced the Panthers this season with an outstanding time of 12 minutes and 20 seconds, which is just one second over the school record. Other Snider runners who ran in the Sectional were Bruce Shearer, Steve Kiracofe, Randy Smith, Joe Dillon, Larry Ross, and Glen Abels. Illness and injury held back the team many times, resulting in a record of 4 wins, 7 losses, and a draw. Mr. Patterson, after his final season as coach of the team, commented that it had not been one of the school ' s finer years in wrestling. A few of the grapplers did make a name for themselves during the season. Pete Deprimio and Emmitt Robinson were both sectional cham- pions. Scoreboard-71 Cagers display talent Despite the ability, depth and teamwork that was evident this year, the Panther basketball squad could not bring the season to an end with a winning record. The season record of 7 wins and 14 losses did not reflect the team Snider had. Seniors Mike Woods and Robert Bramlev led the team in scoring consistently through the season with Chris Mitchell, Steve Vernasco and Larry Hughes doing a fine job on the floor. Underclassmen, Shelby Board, Mike Mover and Jessie Wright, showed much promise for the future. The disappointing story was that most of the season ' s games were close; they could have gone either way, but the Panthers ended on the short end too many times. It must be remembered though, that throughout the year, Snider posed a powerful threat to every team and really played quite well. RIGHT: Bramlev breaks fast and away to the basket. The Panthers had more depth and better overall performances than even the 1974 State Championship team. The team began their meet schedule at New Haven in October by taking second place. In the following months they travelled to Warsaw, In- dianapolis North Central, Elmhurst and Muncie. At New Haven the team received a second place for the four- man team. The four-man team received a seventh place at the Warsaw meet. For their efforts at the North Central meet, the two-man team received a third place. At the Elmhurst meet the two-man team received a third place and the four-man team earned a fourth place. The team did well at Muncie North bringing home three awards. The two-man team brought home a second place award; Constance Bax took fourth place in the speaker competition; Brian Dickson received fifth place in the speaker com- petition. Specialties-99 Marching band highlights half-time This year, the marching band was directed by David L. Showalter. The beginning two weeks were a little shaky, with both director and students getting adjusted to each other. But after many long, hard, sweaty hours, it all began to come together. There were two weeks of practice before the school year began and then every night after school. The band supplied half-time entertainment for five football games and performed in the Fort Wayne Community Marching Band Festival. The Festival provided an excellent op- portunity for the band to perform their N.I.S.B.O.V.A. routine. The peak of the season was the N.I.S.B.O.V.A. Marching Band Contest at Northrop High School. The band received a first rating for their performance. The band included two extra engagements, marching downtown in the Veteran ' s Day Parade and playing at Robert Armstrong ' s inauguration as Mavor. Besides attending meetings every fourth Monday, members organized outside activities such as eating out at a nearby French food restaurant. Cooking cultural dishes was among the favorite of the members. Items such as Crepes-Suzettes and Fondue From- mage were created at the meetings. Other gala gatherings included a Mardi Gras to wrap up the year ' s ac- tivities. One reason for Le Cenacle ' s ex- istence was to inspire an appreciation of French culture. Another was to make students more aware of the in- fluence the French have had on our American culture. LEFT PAGE: Dave Brvan passes the salt to •Julie Foote. Specialties-127 129 Three years. To the Class of ' 76 as sophomores, that length of time seemed an eternity. Now, as our final year at Snider draws to an end, most of us wonder where the days went. It seems like only yesterday when we first walked into this building. We were a little scared of its size, the number of other students, and the impending six classes we had to face, but mostly there was a feeling of anticipation about the upcoming three years. And what an experience it has been! Now, at the close of our final year, we can look back on many happy moments. As sophomores we saw our track team and one of our wrestlers take state, (and our girls volleyball team finish a close second). As juniors we saw Snider ' s craziest musical and watched our basketball team beat Marion, the team that later became state champs. As seniors we had an extra week of summer vacation because of the teachers ' strike, we saw the realization of the Freedom ' 76 Independence Week, and finally, our own graduation. Now, we are leaving Snider. For some of us, the immediate future holds more schooling. For others, it will be careers and marriage. But we will never forget Snider and the friendships and memories it brought us. We are, and always will be, The Spirit of ' 76 . Yes, what a year! We had some good times. Nothing but fun, fun, fun. Right? Wrong. There were a lot more fun times than borin g ones, yet there were more to it than just that. Think of all the time-consuming ac- tivities that so many of us were in- volved in. From the athletes to the sw- ing choir, everyone spent a good part of his year doing something constructive. The outcome? Fantastic. Proof? Well, if you remember the fall play, the spring musical, the large turnout at the Homecoming game and dance, and the junior-senior prom, you ' ll be con- vinced. That ' s not to mention some of our outstanding athletes, (In track alone there was Jimmy Stewart, Kevin Brown and Dave Barngrover to just mention a few.) Yes Juniors, you ' ve proved yourselves to be nothing but a success. Sure we had plenty of hard times, but weren ' t they worth it? Who remembers the hard times? What everyone remembers is the great party that was so much fun, or the football game we just barely won. Juniors, you ' ve got class. CLOCKWISE: TOP LEFT: The junior class of- ficers. These events have worked together to make us the class we are today. We came to Snider in September divided by junior highs. Lane and Blackhawk. We faced the frustrations of being in a new school, not knowing the people in our classes, and getting lost in the crowded halls. We felt lost and alone during the cold, chaotic passing periods. Sometimes it seemed that there were no friendly faces in the halls or classrooms. The junior class planned a sophomore mixer to help us get ac- quainted with each other. The dance was a great success; many new friends were made. Through this and other events, we made new friends and ac- quaintances with the other members of our class. As the year continued, we became accustomed to Snider and each other. Now we belong to the school and the other members of our class. All the ex- periences of the year have worked together to unite us into the class of 1978. TOP: Sophomore class officers: Lorrie Courtney (Treasurer), Carrie Kile (Vice-President). I remember the excitement of publishing a yearbook, and the frustration of meeting deadlines. I recall the November election in which our own athletic director was elected mayor, and the day on which President Ford spoke at the Memorial Coliseum. The excitement and the disappointment of the year blended together to give 1975-76 its own special flavor. I have appreciated the opportunity to edit the 1976 Safari. I enjoyed developing the theme; I realized how uni- que the Panthers really are. We truly are a school that shows the spirit of drive and determination of the pioneers.
