J Safari 1 974 R. Nelson Snider High Scliool 4600 Fairlawn Pass Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805 Volume 9 ' ■tt- mmn Returning to the simple life Ever try to eat a pine cone; many parts are edible, you know. Along with Euell Gibbons getting back to nature, many students got into the natural scene. There were new health food stores and exercise centers. People also got back to previous times with the nostalgia and 50 ' s revivals. American Graffiti, 50 ' s days at school, and ren- ditions of old songs took people back to times which they tried to reconstruct in their own way. Many sporting milestones were passed during the year: Hank Aaron and his home run record, Indiana and its swimming dynasty downfall, and the Miami Dolphins won their second con- secutive Super Bowl Title. With inflation and increased prices, people became do-it-yourselfers. Kids became more handy and built their own boats, made their own clothes, designed their own jewelry, and grew ' their own food. While everyone became more aware of every day life, they also became more aware of themselves and their surroundings. students travel to Mexico Fifty-eight Snider stu- dents spent an exciting spr- ing vacation in Mexico City. This unforgettable trip includ- ed many tours and activities. They climbed the pyramids, attended a Spanish mass, visited the Anthropology museum, toured Chapuitepec Castle, walked around the University of Mexico, ate at ex- clusive restaurants, and bargained at the markets. Topping off the week on Friday, the group spent the en- tire day in Taxco, the largest silver mining town in the world. The trip gave the group a chance to use the Spanish they had learned in the classroom and understand the Mexican people a little better. It also brought the students closer together and everyone came home with new friends. TOP: Welt, looks like the Dodgers lost again. RIGHT: All my girls. Menos, menosi Naturally, not all of a student ' s time is spent at school. Activities varied from hobbles to jobs to recreation: a week in Florida or a streak at Azar ' s. Some kids spent a large part of their free time at McDonald ' s or Charlie ' s, while many worked at grocery stores, gas stations, and Glenbrook. Bicycling interested more people than ever before, both as exercise and a means of transportation. Those who had their own cars still enjoyed souping them up and racing. If there weren ' t any of those fun parties, the theatres were frequented and The Exorcist and The Sting were the big movies of the year. But as always there were quiet moments to share with a friend. Each day is your own treasure — enjoy it 10 m n. i X ' - ■-1 J 11 ABOVE: The Homecoming Court members were: Ellen Schenkel, VIcki Harges, Mary Lou Banthien, Jane Reed, 1972 Queen Karia Boxberger, Chris Slater, Joanne Richard, and Lee Ann Philips. They included: color day, sucker day, grub day, hats off day, sock-it-to-em day, and the most popular 50 ' s day. A pep session, powder- puff football game, car smash, bonfire, and caravan also helped boost the team to a vic- tory over Huntington North on October 12. Senior Jane Reed was crowned Homecoming Queen in half-time activities as a thrilled capacity crowd look- ed on. A dance concluded the evening where everyone had a good time. Pictured are: The Homecoming pep session which brought class races, faculty ' cheerleacJers . and lots of excitement. The crowd looking on as the court and their escorts were introduced. Everyone did a tremendous Job In the story of the controversial editorial which threatened to break up a marriage. Essay on Spirit Panther school spirit was evident this year in many different ways. The spirit at the pep sessions was sometimes hiding somewhe re under the bleachers. The most successful pep sessions were those with a purpose: Homecoming, Girl ' s Volleyball in State Finals, and Basketball Sectional. Our cheerleaders put In a lot of hard work to help boost spirit but the only time anyone really expressed it was during Roll Call. The Juniors dominated the show of spirit by receiving the Spirit Stick almost everytime. Girl ' s sports were strong examples of spirit shown by teams. The participants had the spirit and tried to relay it to others. The volleyball team took se- cond at State and the gymnastic team had a successful season too. At Christmas time the Lettermen ' s Club spon- sored their annual Can Drive breaking a city record by raising over 17,770 cans to give to the Fort Wayne Christmas Bureau. Mr. Williams ' first period class, Room 103, brought in 4,894 cans in a week ' s time for first place. The Student Council ' s State School Christ- mas project was successful too. Students collected over $900 worth of gifts and gave eleven parties for State School patients. Our Marching Band was the only one from Fort Wayne to receive first or superior ratings in the NISBOVA contest held in October. Our band performed at all home football and basketball games and at all the pep sessions to help boost spirit. Much club spirit was presented with activities, dances and presentations throughout the year. by Julie Becker 16 er panthers i i , J J V K- K t  . - ij ttotMm V « ' 4 . jL « ■' ' flk ■J T % How to succeed J. The girls accomplished something that no other Snider team has ever done, placed second in Statel The girls began their season with their goals set high. Their practices included a minimum of twelve hours a week. They prac- ticed skills and drills but also spent endless hours running for endurance and building strength by the use of the weight machine. Throughout the year the giris gave support to one another. The team ' s oneness was seen by their complemen- tary playing. Combining their hours of practice, competitive spirit, natural ability and dedication, the Snider volleyball team had a fan- tastic year of competition. The girls faced only one real challenge in the ' 73 season — the State game against Mishawaka Marion. The final season record, 8-14, was the only disappointing factor in the highly competitive season. Led by seniors Doug Bruick and Jim Newman, the team advanced to the semi- finals of the Sectional championship before losing to Carroll. Several Juniors provided the extra strength; Frank Jackson, Bill Hagler, and Glenn Carr being the predominant players. A total of five games during the regular season were decided by less than five points. The pr om is planned by the Junior Class, which followed the precedent established by the Class of 1974 of having the prom outside of school. The Junior class also followed a Class of 1 974 precedent in having a prom court and queen. The queen was elected by all couples attending the prom, and the court was elected by class sponsors and representatives of the classes. John Ellett and Natalie Nicholas represented the Senior Class. The Senior Class Prom Queen was Janna Gehl. Many people went to after prom parties and breakfasts follow- ing the prom, and to Pokagon the next day. PAYTON, KATHY PEASTER, JANICE K. This year ' s dance was a big success. The Big dance of the year, though, was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held in the Musicians Union Hall with Dick Seeger ' s Band playing. A great deal of the Juniors ' time was taken in planning for the event- filled occasion. Many early- morning meetings characteriz- ed the planning. The theme, Photographs and Memories, was chosen early by the chairmen of the prom com- mittees. Prom colors of burgundy and pink showed up in the programs and decorations. All the planning paid off and the night was a smashing success. The Class of ' 75 is one of the most spirited ever. This fact showed up in their motto, We ' ve got spirit, we ' ve got drive; we ' re the Class of ' 75. Their great record for winning the spirit stick demonstrates how their motto was put to use. The class had good leadership with their sponsors, Mr. Ted King and Miss Diane Boknecht, helping constantly. With the help of these spon- sors and many class members this year culminated and was one of the most progressive ever. 154 RIGHT: Mike Calhoun, Vice-President; Eric Rumschlag, treasurer; Peggy Lewis, President; Joanne Richard, secretary. Among these are: Mis Dierstein, for the art work, Mr. Jerry Schluete Walsworth ' s representative, Mrs. Shaw ' s Journalist class, Watter ' s Studio, Tom Blake, Mrs. Shaw, ou faculty advisor, and my family and friends who felt, I ' ri sure, that they have heard about every page in th book at least forty-three times. These people have si assisted and encouraged the staff to produce the 197 SAFARI as you see it now.
