■ - Safari R. Nelson Snider High School 4600 Fairlawn Pass Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 3, 1968 Something New Under the Sun Teens from the sophisticated discotheques of the eastern seaboard to the psychedelic shores of Malibu feel that a school is never ' up tight ' until it has graduated a senior class and made itself known to high schools everywhere. This past summer Panthers noticed expressions other than blank looks when R. Nelson Snider High School was mentioned. Pupils as near as New Haven and as far away as Tampa, Florida, are well aware of who the Snider Panthers are. Some attribute the new-found success to a beautiful building, but the real beauty is beyond the brick and cement. Neither is this acknowledgement merely because the school is aging. It was the result of much time and effort by many people. Two National Merit Finalists, an extremely high standing in numerous NISBOVA contests, a city football championship, a sectional crown in basketball, and the city sportsmanship trophy are several examples of the rewards of hard work. Fifty percent of Snider ' s first graduating class is now attending a four-year college, another twenty percent is engaged in other two- year training programs. Pupils have worked and will continue to work to uphold the tradition of greatness. Everywhere people are finding that Snider High School is SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. i: Look Around 4 Departments 18 Sports 58 Faces 82 Organizations 136 Individuals Work Together to Provide Complete 4 . . . Students read short stories, classics and contemporary novels. Six book reports are required of all students. Through practice in theme writing stu- dents gain basic knowledge of sentence structure and paragraph unity. Junior English classes cover nearly the same material, but with some variation in emphasis. A study of Shakespear ' s Macbeth and Shaw ' s Pygmalion are included in the curriculum. All junior students are required to read and report on six books. Expository writing and grammar are combined and put to good use in writing a research paper, another requirement of the junior year. A selective survey of modern literature is the main area of literary study during senior English with a special emphasis placed upon Shaw ' s Caeser and Cleopatra and O ' Neill ' s Beyond the Horizon. Constant reference to the rules of good grammar are also made, especially as the need is expressed in the written work. A special half hour oral report is another feature of the course. This department is made up of ap- proximately six hundred Snider students, which is well over one-third of the student body. Snider ' s Fine Arts department makes it possible for individual students to excel and to pursue their ambitions. Courses in fine arts encourage the use of imagination and creativity while learning responsibility. This has been the busiest and most profitable year yet. With Snider ' s unlimited potential, the future promises to be even better. Two money-making drives were sponsored by the Fine Arts department this year. Every year the students work diligently for a series of displays, concerts, and plays. Special events included organization contest, solo and ensemble contests, a demonstration concert by the Concert Orchestra, and the musical Bye. Bye. Birdie. Basic vocabulary is learned and grammar is stressed through explanation and practice. French II stresses oral fluency, pronounciation, and the verb system. French III includes grammar, continued oral practice, and conversation. Literary works of several writers are read. French IV is a course in French literature and civilization. Latin I includes basic grammar and vocabulary. Latin II involves reading parts of Caesar ' s Gallic Wars and portions from Ovid and Pliny. Latin III reviews grammar and relates current political and economic problems to those of Rome. It includes Roman oratory and readings of Cicero. Latin IV is a study of Roman poetry, mythology, and religion. German I introduces German culture, vocabulary, and grammar. German II is a study of geography, history, habits, and music, as well as grammar. Spanish I stresses the basic structure of the language, poems, songs, grammar, and pronounciation. Advanced dialogues and grammar are studied in Spanish II. In Snider there is an industrial arts program which enables students, mainly interested boys, an opportunity to broaden their education in the field of industrial arts. Four such courses are offered here at Snider. These four are woods, metals, drafting, and power mechanics. The Wood I and II courses are taught by Mr. Short and lasts for one year each. The first functions of this course are to teach students the care of tools and the elementary con- struction of projects then to turn to projects like cabinet making, mill work, and other interests. Drafting I, taught by Mr. Kline, is a course to learn the fundamentals of drafting, lettering, sketching, and other needs to prepare the student for the advanced drafting II course, where engineering and or architecture are taught. Metals I and II are taught by Mr. Huffman to offer experience in the field of metals. They last one year each. Power mechanics is taught by Mr. Huffman also. This one year course teaches a study of circuitry and motors and the student has an opportunity to work with small combustion engines. All of these courses give a chance for Snider students to learn industrial trades which will aid in their future field of work. RIGHT: Two boys work intently on shop proj- ects. The 1967-68 school year at Snider found many students enjoying classes in the field of mathematics. A faculty of eight teachers taught these students in the various courses of algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry and analytical geometry. This year another course, topics in mathematics, was offered during the second semester for students desiring one more credit in this subject. In the math department, classes are in sequence of order for enrollment. Students first enroll in algebra, then geometry and advanced algebra and trigonometry in order to have better understanding for the material. When the month of March approached. Panthers who are taking the classes of advanced algebra and trigonometry and analytical geometry received the opportunity to participate in a nation-wide mathematics examination. One hundred and forty-one Snider students participated during this school year. These one hundred and forty-one students were ranked with all other students from the high schools participating in the examination. Departments- Phys Ed Classes Develop Skills Many students took part in Snider ' s physical education program. This pro- gram included not only regularly conducted classes, but extra-curricular activities as well. Sophomores were required to take physical education classes. Juniors and seniors took physical education classes according to their own choice and needs. The students were taught a variety of things in these classes, ranging from the use of apparatus, softball and modern dance, to tennis and volleyball. A number of extra-curricular programs were also offered to those students interested. Among these were archery, fencing, girls ' basketball and volleyball, and gymnastics. Many students took advantage of these afterschool activities. The greatest task undertaken by the physical education department during the year was the annual gym show, The Greatest Show on Earth. The show included a number of events including modern dance, volleyball, free exercise, a six-ring circus, routines on the apparatus equipment, karate demonstrations, wrestling, and clown acts. The show, presented in April, gave the students an opportunity to display their skills and talents. GILBERT BAUMGARTNER Education . . . Gymnastics. Physical DEAN FAST . . . Seniors have all these selections plus advanced chemistry. Chem Study is presently taught at Snider. This course involves answering the question why instead of the traditional method which focused on memorization and deductive reasoning. Chemists study materials found on the earth to analyze their atomic and molecular struc- tures and the changes that affect them. Panther chemists share a lab and equipment to explore the depths of chemistry. Advanced chemistry broadens the senior ' s basic knowledge of chemistry and keeps him in practice for a college elective. Energy and power of all types are investigated within the scope of physics. This science involves the occupation of engineering which designs methods of converting energy from one form to another. Zoology is the study of animals and their environment. Snider zoologists name, classify, examine, and describe how living organisms look and act. The only sophomore elective, earth science, is the study of the composition of the earth. The department, coordinated by Mr. Gecowets, offers only one course, world history, to the incoming sophomores. In the junior year United States history is the required curriculum. Snider offers its most varied semester selection to the seniors. Economics and sociology are both recommended, but a requirement for graduation is the completion of one of the two. Seniors must also pass the essentials of a semester course, government, in order to attend graduation exercises in May. The most recent course added to Panther opportunities is values and issues which investigates basic problems and assets of the American society. Mrs. Posey and Mr. Hemmer, class sponsors, were always on hand to assist the class officers. They spent much time preparing plans for the Junior Prom, Oriental Twilight. They also worked on other activities such as the Sopho- more Mixer given early in the year for the Sophomore Class. Junior Class Returns to Build on Its Foundation From the start, the Junior Class found themselves in everything under the sun. Throughout the year, juniors used their talents and time in everything from studying Shakespeare ' s Macbeth to mixing substances in chemistry lab. In the fall, the juniors elected class officers. Those chosen were Brett Nahrwold, president; ' Rex Sefton, vice-president; Connie Lambert, secretary; and Kay Fuhrman, treasurer. With the help of their sponsors, Mr. Hemmer and Mrs. Posey, they organized a Sophomore Mixer, a time when new sophomores could become acquainted. During the winter months, plans were begun for the Junior Prom on April 20, an event which the juniors will never forget. The Junior Breakfast was considered a triumph by the juniors because the underclassmen served the food. During the spring, the libraries were buzzing with students conscientiously working on their English research papers. Hard work and re- laxation were successfully combined by the juniors for a truly rewarding year. The officers, with the help of their sponsors, Mrs. Wallis and Mr. Patterson, organized all class func- tions during the school year. Mark Greenlee Elected in This year, another group of dazed sophomores began their high school career at Snider. As always these students were a little embarrassed, a little excited, and greatly confused; but they soon settled down, formed a standard routine, and began a year of learning and socializing. The sophomores learned, through studying, that Panther life is not only rewarding: but filled with sports events, extra-curricular activities, pep sessions, and dances. The sophomores soon joined in the preparations as well as the fun of these activities. During the year, the sophomores chose their class officers. Elected were Mark Greenlee, president; Mark La Suer, vice-president; DeLane Fielden, secretary; and Marsha Smith, treasurer. These people, under the guidance of their class sponsors, planned all class activities. They organized and headed the committees for the Sophomore Party, on March 15, which ended the first year for the class of ' 70. LEFT: Eager sophomore students turned out before dawn to board chartered buses for their long-awaited trip to Chicago. Soph- omores toured the Museums of Science and Industry and Natural History. They returned home exhausted; however, all had benefited in some way from the trip. RIGHT: Cam- paigning plays a big part in class elections. Marsha Smith displays one of the posters which helped her to be elected class treas- urer. 126 .. . I have learned not only of picas, three column lay- out, and cropping; but also of people. Working with so many individual people has truly been the great benefit from my position. A special thank you goes to Ruth Hart, SAFARI advisor, for her guidance and patience. Also, I would like to thank Mr. Jim Arthur and Mr. Bob Bla nton, both of American Yearbook Company for their profes- sional assistance and personal tolerance. The work of people like Ginny Rish, Dave Dopp, Sally Shambaugh, and Kathy Thorington has made this SAFARI Something New Under The Sun. I say in all honesty that it has been a wonderful job and one which I will miss. Best of Luck to Dave Dopp and the Staff of SAFARI ' 69.
