Their then-radical views were grad- ually accepted, and women attained their goal in 1920. Today, the struggle continues. The National - Organization for Women campaigns to extend wom- en's rights and to give women a more active part in , society. Ever since their emancipation during the Civil War, blacks have desired real freedom and equality. The initial significant step was the Supreme Court's 1954 decision in Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. The declaration that separate but equal facilities are unconstitutional, sparked the civil rights movement. which is working to broaden the blacks' realm of freedoms. The minorities in our society have always strived for true freedom and acceptance by others. Through hard work and determination progress is being made.
