Rhodes, Sponsor FOREWORD Many years ago a panther lounging on Fort Worth streetcar tracks provided the city with a new nickname and Fort Worth High School withia mascot. The incident has sunk into oblivion, but here, in this book, are imprisoned the events and personalities which have made the Paschal Panther the obiect of renewed interest and tame. The Panther no longer lolls across streetcar tracks. He has ven- tured to excel in every facet of school lite. Assembled on these pages is proof. During his iun- ior year he participated in the activities at the Student Service Council, always upholding the fine grades which led to his capturing the Junior English Medal. With camera in hand, Wilkes, in his senior year, worked with the Annual Stott, the Booster Committee, and the Student Service Council while holding the ottices of president of Penta and reporter of Allied Youth. THERON BROOKS in his three years at Paschal has become an outstanding leader. He twice served as a mem- ber ot the Student Service Council and was an active member at the An- nual Statt, Science Club, Penta, Allied Youth, J.C.L., and the National Honor Society. Because of his ambition and enthusiasm, Theron was a nominee for the presidency of the senior class. ROYAL In keeping with the collegiate size of the T956 Panther, the statt presents a section which has long occupied an honored place in most college annuals. This section, a Who's Who of Paschal, is not meant to honor only those who have been honored with an elective office. The students in this section were nominated by a committee of teachers, who selected them on the basis of their valuable and often thankless service to Paschal. The T956 Panther presents to you the Royal Purples. Sports and related activities have oc- cupied most of ANNE CHORN'S school days. As co-captain of the volleyball team and a member of the girls' tennis team she has made a definite contribution to athletic competition at Paschal. Cheerleader and Sports Fol- lies Queen were two coveted honors bestowed on Anne this year. She was also a nominee tor Senior Favorite. While at Paschal, TRAVIS COOMER has served as an active member of the Student Service Council for three years. He is also a two-year lettermon in football, during which time he was nominated for the Westfall Trophy. Al- though Travis was busy promoting school activities, he has maintained an excellent scholastic record which won for him a place in the National Honor Society. PURPLES SUE GOLDSTEIN'S untiring devotion to the school and her willingness to worls has earned her a place among the Royal Purples. She has become o virtual iunior member ofthe office force. Her activities at Paschal have been myriad. She has served as a delegate to the Allied Youth Conference at Buck Hill Falls, ofticiatecl as a Bible reader, filled on office in the Vagabonds, and worked on the Annual Stott. ,I l A. As vice-president of the iunior class last year, BILL FROST gave endless hours to the planning and preparation of its activities. Being a two-year foot- ball Ietterman, a Student Service Coun- cil representative, a member of Penta, the Science Club, and the Steering Committee has not kept Bill from earn- ing a fine scholastic standing, In 1955 Bill represented Paschal at Boys' State in Austin. LEE HAWTHORNE, well-known for his loyalty to the Purple and White, is always present at Paschal activities. His enthusiastic interest in school affairs is further emphasized by the large number of color slides he has made. Serving on the Student Service Council and belonging to Penta and Allied Youth have not kept him from making a 'IOO'Ma attendance record in Pan-Am this year. An avid interest in scientific matters motivated RUDY GAEDKE'S election as this year's president of the Science Club. He attained deserved academic recognition as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Contest. PASCHAL MUSIC The Paschal Music Department, under the able direction ot Miss Lois Ruth Mitchell, tries to instill an appreciation of good music in the members of the student body, it also furnishes an indispensable part of the assembly programs. The Orchestra, largest of the music department groups, has presented varied and sparkling programs throughout the year. Paschal was well represented in the All-State Orchestra by sixteen musicians who took their places after auditions. Among other ap- pearances made were: Christmas and Spring Con- certs, P.T.A. programs, Open House, All-City High School Chorus and Orchestra Concert, Highland Park Music Festival, Diamond Hill High School as- sembly program, Baccalaureate, and Commencement Exercises. The Girls' Glee Club, composed of first-year stu- dents, promotes interest in choral music and stimulates music activity in the school. These students have furnished music for numerous assembly programs, for Open House, and during Education Week. The Mixed Chorus has many accomplishments to its credit this year. So impressive is the progress made this year that Colonel N. J. Whitehurst, competent band director for the past thirteen years, made this statement con- ' cerning the present and future potentialities, I This is the best concert bancl that I've ever had ' the pleasure of working with. I expect the band , to reach one hundred members in two years because of the large number of sophomores enrolled in my classes this year who are gaining valuable experience. I attribute the success ot the Paschal band to the new band room and excellent equipment. 116 iz I s S BAND YATES, RIDDLE, HARDY, COPLIN, AMBURN, CHESTER, DEAN, MOORHEAD, COLLINS, BERGIN,HEWETT, MACUNE, CRAUGH, HUMPHRIES, PETERS, CAESAR, HUSA, HANNAH, HERNANDEZ, PHILLIPS, PAGE, NORCROSS, YOUNGBLOOD, McMORAN, PACHECO, HODGES, MARTIN, TRITTON, SMITH ' Row 5: GILL, RENFRO, SNODGRASS, BOWDEN, BISHOP, WORTMAN, HOBBS, CODY, JOHNSON, SHAW, GRIMMETT, DEAN, WHITEHURST. Music for pre-game pep rallies, as well as for parades and school open-houses, has been furnished by these Paschulites. On March 16th at the Jacksboro Band Festival the Band entered twenty-nine soloists and sixteen ensemble players in the concert and sightread- ing contest, and in the all-city solo and ensem- ble contest on April 'IOTI1 the some number was heard. A iunior bancl is available for those whose proficiency has not yet reached the high level of attainment necessary for regular band mem- bership. Drum Major: LOY ROOKE POM POM GIRLS PaschaI's Pom Pom Girls feature clockwork precision and lively stepping as they swing through their intricate marches and novel dance routines. FUTURE NURSES CLUB High school is a time of planning, selec- ting a vocation, and choosing a school for further training. Two years ago Mrs. Velma Eads founded the Future Nurses Club at Paschal to foster interest in nursing as a profession. Girls have a rare opportunity to become fully acquainted with all aspects of nursing before entering that field. They learn of the scholarship program and the degree available and often obtain first-hand information from a local college. Feeling that success in the field of medicine is irn- possible without a keen sense of charity, many Paschal future nurses gave their time unselfishly during the March of Dimes campaign against polio. This is a young club which is steadily growing as more girls are attracted to the field of nursing. After a fairly satisfactory non-confer- ence schedule was completed, the Panthers were disappointed by an early loss to Carter Riverside, But plucking the four following tough teams, the Panthers returned to the top of the district as co-champions with Arlington Heights. On a cold, rainy night the Panthers met Sunset of Dallas in the bi-district game, and lost T6 to 7. As one looks back, he realizes that the first Panther eleven from the new school was a carryover of the unconquer- able spirit displayed in all Paschal activities. CARTER'S VICTORY SHADES PANTHERS' HOPES Paschal's chances at getting an early lead in the conference race were shattered when Carter defeated the Panthers 35-14. The Eagles took the lead, making three straight touchdowns before Paul Gauntt passed to end Gary McLeod for PaschaI's first touchdown. After the half-time ceremonies the Panthers seemed to come alive with a sixty-yard gallop by Chris Mitetq, making the score 21-14. The Panthers' hopes faded out when an incom- plete pass was thrown, and the ball was given to Carter. Carter then took charge of the game, making two more touchdowns and giving the River- siders a 35-14 victory over the Panthers. After a very sluggish T4-O first halt, the Panthers, led by Bubba Gauntt, played sensationally the third and fourth quarters. Gauntt started the second halt with a 36-yard touchdown run. On the same play a few minutes later he was tackled but pitched out to Arthur Baird for another tally. Chris Mitett's interception set up the last score, which was made by Richard Loughridge from the T3-yard line. Baird led in scoring with two of Paschal's six touchdowns.
